Rating: Summary: READ WITH TISSUES Review: No one who believes that animals don't have feelings, thoughts, souls...should not read this book. When you read of Rawls's childhood experiences, you'll see that a nonanimal-lover just wouldn't understand. Billy wants his coon dogs so much, and he then works very hard to make his childhood dream a reality. But like the reader, Billy gets even more out of this dream-come-true. Old Dan & Little Ann are completely loyal to Billy, as well as one another. The love they share is unconditional and not often experienced by many readers. They are to later make the biggest sacrifice imaginable. This book is, in warning, a complete tear jerker...but it's worth every tissue spent! After this one, I encourage you to go straight to Phyllis Reynolds Naylor's Shiloh.
Rating: Summary: Where the Red Fern Grows Review: Where the Red Fern Grows is a wonderful book for the family to read together. My 8th.grade teacher read this to the my English class. We laughed and cried together as we listened to this story of Billy and his beloved hound dogs. The setting of this story is the Ozark mountains during the depression. Billy's family struggle to make ends meet. We watch as Billy works two long years to earn money for his hounds. We travel through the Ozarks on many adventures with Billy and the hounds. We see Billy learn many lessons about love, honesty, hard work, loyalty, death and most of all faith. Mr. Rawls tells this story with humor, action, and much emotion. The reader feels as if they have been transported back in time. This is simple story, to be enjoyed by teacher and students or parent and children!
Rating: Summary: p Review: Where the Red Fern Grows By Wilson RawlsIf you read Where the Red Fern Grows, you'll be amazed. There is so much suspense, sadness, and laughter in this book. Wilson Rawls the author grew up in the northeastern Ozarks in Oklahoma, roaming around with his bluetick hounds, just like the character of this book. Billy is a young boy, growing up in the Cherokee county in the Ozarks. He finds an ad in a magazine saying coon hound pups for sale. He saves up money and puts the money in a tin can. When he saves up enough money, him and his grandfather keep it a secret from his parents and order the pups. When they came in he had to walk to the big city to get them. On the way home, he named them Old Dan and little Ann. Billy raises the pups and trains them how to hunt. On one of the hunts, he was hunting the ghost coon. A couple of the town's tough boys bet him that his dogs couldn't catch the ghost coon. Billy won the bet, bet a tragic thing happen that night. Some one died that night when they were hunting. It was an accident, but Billy blamed it on him self. Billy also tried his luck by putting his dogs in a competition. His dogs did great, but several things happen there. One of the things that happened was that a blizzard came thought when the competition was going on. His grandfather also broke his leg when hunting. But he one the competition and got the gold cup. When he got home, he gave the gold cup to his youngest sister. I thought that this book was one of the best book I ever read. When I started reading the book I just didn't want to stop. The best thing I liked about it was that it wasn't to long, but not to short. There are more things that happen in the book, but Im not going to tell you what happens.
