Summary: Delaware,Sturgis and Sharavi!I love it!
Review: I'm a big fan,but I had never considered introducing Sharavi into the L.A. scene. BRILLIANT!Yes the subject is dark, but the characters represent different views on it. It worked for me.I loved the action.I loved Alex going deep under cover.I'm still a fan!

Summary: Parts are good, parts are ok, parts are not great
Review: Too often, reviews are either very positive or very negative on Amazon. Mine is in the middle. I personally don't like reading about killers of children or people who are like those that drive people to read The Silence of the Lambs. However, once I got into the book, I was not turned off like some other books. One of his earlier books, I stopped reading after some fifty pages because I didn't want to read about a really sick person who killed children. This book has some very good parts, the focus on eugenics and the partial guilt that was felt by the main character in being a psychologist. The gratituous "gay good policeman" could have been left out, the Israeli cop was good, the villians were poorly developed except the woman character...and she was not that well done, just erotic and interesting. I agree with another reviewer who asked that there be a better reason for the murders stated...in fact the ending was a real let down. I guess folks get into an author and they can do no wrong and just sell more and more books. If this is the best of the author's last three books, then he still needs to improve. The genre is not condusive to great writing in general, a good page turner is all that most strive to be. Given that criteria, it was better than most I have read, but the author seems to be capable of doing an even better job in the future. I would recommend it to those who like this kind of book, those going on a plane ride/vacation or those who are looking for a book to escape into...however there is better out there.

Summary: Kellerman at his best!
Review: Definitely my favorite author - Kellerman is certainly in his element when he writes about the Los Angeles area (especially like it when Alex Delaware visits the near-Silverlake area!) Great idea bringing Daniel into the book. Again, I read it too fast and now have to wait for the next one!

Summary: Kellerman a page turner!
Review: I agree that the ending is so-so. Robin is so underdeveloped as a person. There are other little errors. Robin and Alex were playing hearts. Hey JK, hearts is for 4 !Yet, compare this book with others...the pages fly by, his cadence is terrific.

Summary: Very dark
Review:

Though When the Bough Breaks was hardly "light" reading, it seems that author Jonathan Kellerman's view of the human race is becoming darker if his characters are any reflection of that view. This is a disturbing book on many levels, but especially in terms of the loss of a moral compass experienced by some of the book's characters.

But it's also the fine writing that I have come to expect from Kellerman. I can quibble about the irrelevance of his red herring; I am never happy with a mystery writer who gives me a puzzle that is not really soluble by me, the reader. But that's a small quibble about a book that I devoured.

Summary: A psycho-thriller mystery that will satisfy everyone!
Review: Jonathan Kellerman writes to keep the reader on the edge of his seat and it certainly comes together in "Survival." He combines the horror of a serial killer with the current topics of racism and eugenics. Don't know what that is? No problem! The topic is thorougly explained and the author lets you know his own philosophy. A well-written novel that educates the masses as well as entertains them!

Summary: Cultural generalizations
Review: I have read and enjoyed every Kellerman book. This one, however, made me pause. I live in Idaho and resent Dr. Kellerman's passing inferences about Idaho being full of "skinheads." We here consider them a part of L.A. culture not ours. We ARE a state full of Mormons. Perhaps Dr. Kellerman should read more about their culture before he makes generalizations.

Summary: Very mixed
Review: I agree with both the high rated and low rated reviews above. The character development and plot is weak. But the writing is much better than recent Alex Delaware stories, particularly THE WEB. It is not as closely plotted as is more typical of the mystery genre today, but it does carry an effective emotional impact. This would be appreciated by the reader who wants more than a good puzzle book. If you do not buy it, at least skim pages 188 to 194 while standing in the bookstore. This is a disturbing summary of the roots of the American IQ Testing industry. Americans invented the final solution and that great humanitarian Oliver Wendell Holmes gave it the imprimatur of Justice

Summary: One of his best!
Review: Jonathan Kellerman does it again! This is one of his best. The last part of the book, which brings everything to a head, is exciting.

Summary: Vintage Kellerman
Review: After a couple of disappointing books, Jonathon Kellerman is back in top form in his latest: "Survival of the Fittest". This book is a real page turner: a fast-paced, strong plot and interesting characters. All of the regulars are in the book - Alex Delaware, Milo Sturgis, Robin, and, of course, Spike. The reparte between Milo and Alex is as enjoyable as ever.

The book mixes serial murders with international intrigue. The (re)introduction of an Israeli police inspector (a character in a non-Alex Delaware Kellerman novel) made for some interesting interaction between the inspector and Milo. I hope that we see this character again in some future book.

It seems that in the recent past, Mr. Kellerman's books have all had sexual depravity as the motivating factor. It was a refreshing relief to read a book that was able to keep the reader's interest without strong sexual content. Keep up the good work, Mr. Kellerman. I am sure that there are many other interesting, nonsexual psychological theories and problems that would make fascinating premises for your future books.
