Rating: Summary: TWO FAT FAKE HIKERS Review: I read this book as part of a Book Club - the selection was not made by me. I went in not knowing anything of this writer Bryson nor of the AT. I came out thinking what an incompetent writer and that the AT is probably a lot better than this whinger suggests. As for laughing out loud, I wonder at WHAT? Who would do this??? One reviewer answered this perfectly for me: Bryson is from Comedy Kindergarten. Give this book a PASS. Don't even bother to borrow it from your library. I'm sorry I wasted good Australian $$$ on this one.
Rating: Summary: What a Find Review: It's been 10 years since I've been anywhere near the AT and A Walk In The Woods made me want to hike to the closest access site and start walking. Bill Bryson's sense of humor had me laughing out loud. He made me look at the AT in a way I've never seen it before, more than just woods and trails but where it came from and how it feels to hike over 800 miles.
Rating: Summary: Wonderfull!! Review: Prmpted me to hike.... I lived in Ma. for 35 years and have always wanted to hike the portion there. I have just moved to up-state N.Y.. beautifull as it is here, to me, its to flat. After reading this book, I am making plans to go back to Ma. and see it from a new and vigoris perspective.
Rating: Summary: A laugh out-loud listen. Review: I rarely get the chance to listen to books on tape and thank goodness the one I chose for some long hours in the car was A WALK IN THE WOODS. Mr. Bryson's ability to poke humour at himself, at his fellow hikers and America in general is a pleasure to listen to. And although I would never admit to being a number-cruncher, I found myself enjoying his research and analysis of how the American goverment has treated our great and vast forests. A great treat and highly reccomended.

Rating: Summary: Rediscovering America by Automobile? Review: I was somewhat disappointed with Mr. Bryson's leaving the AT early on for the comforts and conveniences of modern society. In buying the book, one is certainly under the impression that Mr. Bryson would hike the AT from beggining to end and would provide us with interesting and humorous stories of his adventures. Well, to be sure, there are some laugh-out-loud moments--especially with Katz who is by far the most interesting and funny character in the book. But I felt somewhat betrayed when Bryson and Katz bailed out on the trail relatively early. Bryson also provides some interesting historial and social commentary of various points along the AT as well as examining pertinent environmental issues. However, from the point that they leave the trail, the book loses the sense of continuity that it gained early on.
Rating: Summary: Good, and good for you Review: I had so much fun reading this story that I dug all of my old backpacking/camping gear out of the basement, dusted it off after sitting stagnant for a good ten years, and set off for a weekend walk. My legs now hurt as much as my side from all the laughter.
Rating: Summary: Bryson, get on the trail again! Review: Ending a Walk I\in the Woods was a sad moment for me because you felt like friend. I'm from California married to a Vermonter so I am well aware of the late in life love of some of this landscape. As a writer though, you inspired me beyond belief. Thanks
Rating: Summary: Terrific must read for Americans: Conservationists or not Review: I was so sad when this book ended because I had found a friend. Bryson has an ability to view and tell in a way that is spectacularly engaging and informative. I laughed out loud...a lot. On the communter train even, a crime in New York! I miss him now that the AP is over...tell him, finish the 100 miles in Maine. Get Katz, he needs it, you need it. A Fan
