Summary: Fantastic and highly entertaining commentary!
Review: This book is hilarious and educational at the same time. Bryson is very adept at weaving a truely heartfelt tale of his days on the trail while also taking time to educate readers on the history of this country and its natural resources. It is evident that Bryson feels very strongly about some of the pressures facing the natural resources of this country, but he does not preach. The intuitive and descriptive prose used to illustrate the various characters he meets during his travels is wonderful.

This book makes you want to quit your job, grab a pack, and hit the trail. My copy will be dog-eared and battered. The most satisfying read I've had in weeks.

Summary: Very funny, thought-provoking.
Review: Highly recommending this travel essay, it ranks among the best I have read. Very funny, thought provoking, written with genuine affection for the planet he inhabits.

Summary: Fantastic!
Review: Humorous, filled with great hiking and outdoor tips, and just plain great reading! Bryson is a writing magician. I can not wait to read all the rest of his masterpieces.....

Summary: this book is a joke
Review: Although a very descriptive book, Bryson acts as though he knows all there is to know about the AT. Bryson showed that he did know one thing, and that was how to quit.

Summary: One Star may be too kind
Review: In short, don't get the book! I've never hiked the AT, but having worked as a backpacking instructor in New Mexico for years, I thought that the book sounded good by the covers and the review of "laugh out-loud funny." With this review I was expecting a fun book that would remind me of those years in the backcountry, instead I found a book that became a chore to read and I have experienced (as has any experienced backpacker) much better stories then anything even remotely mentioned in the book. Also Bryson never even hiked the AT. He and his partner started out hiking, found it too difficult, then skipped several hundred miles in a car. The pair splits up then Bryson starts to day hike parts and does not even make it to the end of the trail on Katahdin (which I might add is a great spot in February). The only people that would find the book interesting are people that are afraid to go outside and think that a 20-minute walk in the woods away from a parking lot is getting "back to nature."

If you want hiking experiences talk to a backpacker, if you want a great adventure book read about Shackleton's trip aboard the Endurance, but save your money.

Summary: finally a non-fiction book i actually enjoyed...
Review: I kept getting told by a great number of people to read this book. So I finally ordered it last weekend and started it two days ago. I couldn't put it down. I love it! Absolutly love it! I can so relate when he talks about the fact of sleeping terribly light out in the woods and waking up in the middle of night terriefid cause you heard a strange moise right in your area. I grew up about 30 minutes from the Delaware river gap, and went hiking in that area on the AT as a child with my parents many times. And the way he described the Gap reminded me of all those good times. I finished it this morning and have already sent it to my brother and recommended it to a bunch of other friends. A definate must read and a keeper for the bookshelves so when I get old and grey I can pick it up and remmebr those many times I went camping and hiking and having a great laugh. And read it anywhere even if you are getting strange looks from people nearby for laughing!

Summary: GREAT!
Review: Bryson's sarcasm and ability to laugh not only at his peers but himself is a refreshing way to share what could be an overwhelmingly informative and weighty story. I could really relate to Bryson and his companion, Katz. I found myself laughing out loud repeatedly. The way history and issues are woven in to one man's journey is wonderful.

Summary: Great read!
Review: This is a great book. Let me first off address what other reviewers have commented on re: Bryson not finishing the trail: Currently, there are about 2000 people who start the AT each year, and only about 200-300 of them actually finish it. Yes, it is a slight disappointment that he doesn;t finish it, but here's a middle-aged guy, like the rest of us, who knows his limitations, and doesn't have a hard time admitting to them. Let it go.

His hiking partner, Stephen, is a hoot! He's laugh-out-loud funny, and I enjoyed reading about what the two of them had to say to eachother and other people. Sure, the language is a little crass sometimes, but who isn't? This is a truly enjoyable book, and certainly whets your appetite to conquer the closest hill to your house!

Summary: The first 2/3 was excellent and witty but soon became boring
Review: This was a very entertaining and hilarious book until Bryson and Katz decided to stop hiking. Then it seemed Bryson did day hikes just so he had enough material to finish his book. It got extremely boring when he got on his moralistic soapbox. In general, it was encouraging to see two average guys in less than great shape accomplish what they did.

Summary: Good-REAL GOOD
Review: Although I have not cared for some of the author's previous work, this is one of the best books that I have read in the last 3-4 years.I laughed aloud but also felt the pain of the hike.I get the feeling that the author is as proud of his hike as he is of his book and rightfully so.It has gotten me back in the woods.Good hike,Bryson, and a good book, too.
