Rating: Summary: good and funny but beware... Review: This book is very funny, and gives a very good explanation of the apalation trail, but there is mild language and crudeness to it.
Rating: Summary: definitely NOT one of his best Review: A Walk in the Woods is by far Bryson's weakest book. While enjoyable and well researched it lacks the incisive wit and keen eye of "Notes from a Small Island", "Neither Here Nor There", or "Mother Tongue". Best borrowed from the library or bought in a money saving paperback edition.
Rating: Summary: An enjoyable read Review: Bryson offers a humorous and enjoyable narrative of his trip up the AP. It not only gives a good feel for the AT, it is at times marvelously researched, whether the subject be bears or geology or 19th century naturalists. Bryson did the AT well.
Rating: Summary: My wife nearly threw me out! Review: This book was the most fun I've had in a long time. It simply couldn't be put down, every page beckoned and I only stopped reading long enough to catch my breath from laughing so hard or to wipe away the laughter tears so I could keep reading. GET THIS BOOK TODAY, READ IT, THEN WHEN YOU'RE DONE GIVE IT TO SOMEONE YOU WANT TO MAKE LAUGH. (It also gives a fairly decent depiction of the U.S. National Forestry plan, or lack thereof...)
Rating: Summary: Bill and Katz excellent adventure! Review: A real fun read. Bryson is funny, determined and hopeless all at the same time. His hiking partner Katz is a combination of every hiker I've brought along my travels from boy scouts to high mountain treks. I don't know how many times I laughed out loud while reading Bryson's account of his friend on the trail. On the serious side the book is an excellent story of the bonding that occurs when people enter the woods on a hike together. You can know someone for years, but go on a extended hike with them and you'll come away with a new feeling about them. Bryson does a nice job telling about the trail, it's history, beauty & vulnerability. A must read for outdoor enthusiats.
Rating: Summary: Good book Review: Definitely an entertaining read. Katz stole the show. Difficult to believe some of the author's recollections aren't fiction however, because some of what he writes really is unbelieveable, almost like he made parts of the story up for effect. For example, on page 114 he recounts a recollection of reading how some stone age indians from the brazilian rain forest were brought to a big city for the first time and all wet their pants in unison. On the next page, the author claims that he and Katz also wet their pants in unison as they stepped off the trail and were greeted by Gatlinburg's ugly mini-malls. Nevertheless, treat this book as a mix of fact and fiction and you'll be well rewarded.
Rating: Summary: Humorous and informative. Down to earth! Review: My wife and I enjoyed reading about Bill Bryson's experiences with his friend Katz. Their interaction is what makes this book so funny. We now feel better prepared for our own AT adventure and know what to expect out there. We could have done without the geography and history lessons, though.
Rating: Summary: Hilarious. Review: I could not put down this vastly entertaining and informative book about the adventures and ruminations of a chubby, out-of-shape, thoughtful, and somewhat prissy bookworm who sets forth with his sarcastic, even more out-of-shape buddy on a long backpacking trip.
Rating: Summary: I felt like I was hiking right along with him. Well written Review: I have hiked many of the New Hampshire trails that Mr. Bryson talks about. He gives a very accurate discription of what it is like to "walk in the woods". His friend Katz is great. I could not wait to get back to the book to find out what happens next to these two men.Mr Bryson also gives historic and scientific information along with his great story. I loved the book.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful substitute for a walk in the woods Review: A great outdoor novel for the indoor person. I feel like I'm in better shape just by reading it.
