Rating: Summary: engrossing and entertaining Review: I suspect that it's a bit odd for a 39-year-old to be reviewing a children's book--even if it is an award-winner. No, the story may not have the philosophical depth of Robinson Crusoe, but neither is it hampered by the eighteenth-century style of Defoe's work. Simply put, Island of the Blue Dolphins is an immensely entertaining and excellent work. The author paints a vivid picture of Karana's adventures on the island after she is accidentally left abandoned. In an ironic twist, we learn at the end that, despite the hardships that Karana herself suffered, her entire people was wiped out by a shipwreck only a few days after she was abandoned. The story may bring tears to the eyes of younger readers. It brims with action, suspense, excitement, wonder, danger, and the simple love of family and pets. I most highly recommend this work to everyone regardless of his or her chronological age.
Rating: Summary: Island of the Blue Dolphins Review: The Island Of The Blue Dolphins is a story about a twelve-year old girl named Karana. She is the daughter of the chief of the island, Ghalas-At. One day, some Aleuts come from a ship to hunt otter. The captain, Orlov, says he only wants to give them 1/3 of the profit. However, the chief successfully negotiates with the captain to let the profit be equal. Nevertheless, on the day the captain is to give them their share of the profit, he attempts to take off. Then a skirmish breaks out and many of the island's men (including the chief) are killed. The rest of the island's inhabitants decide to go away on a boat manned by white men. Unfortunately, Ramo, her brother who is six, is left behind in the pandemonium. Karana decides to jump off the boat to go back to him. Unluckily, wild dogs kill her brother the second day when he goes off alone. Now Karana is stranded and alone, and her dominant fear of getting attacked by the wild dogs haunts her every night. She tries to survive and life gets easier over time. But she wonders whether a ship will ever come back for her... This story is based on a real island (San Nicolas) and a real Indian tribe. When they sailed to the east, one young girl was actually left behind. Father Gonzales befriended her after her rescue in Mission Santa Barbara and in this way he learned wild dogs killed her brother, but he learned little else from her. We know her as the Lost Woman of San Nicolas. The Lost Woman of San Nicolas is buried on a hill near Mission Santa Barbara. The future about San Nicolas is also unclear. It is currently a secret base for the U.S Navy. However, scientists predict that because of the fierce winds and battling waters, it will one day be swept back into the sea. This book is an excellent summer read for children of all ages. If you like the Hatchet series you will love this book, too.
Rating: Summary: An engrossing story Review: This book is long and detailed, which makes it easy to pick up something new upon each reading. This girl's life alone with her dog on an abandoned island is fascinating.I was introduced to it by a story in fifth grade, but I think in some places it's too mature for children--the beginning of the story is violent and sad. I handled it, but as an adult I would try to introduce kids to this story gently, or wait until they get a little older.
Rating: Summary: Island of the Blue Dolphins Review: This is a book about a girl named Karana. She lived on the Island of the Blue Dolphins for 18 years by herself. A ship of white men come to take them away but Karana and her younger brother Ramo were left on the island. Her brother got killed by wild dogs a day after the ship left. She faced the danger of nature, surviving all of the challenges she encountered. I think this is a very good book because it shows how people can really do things if they put thir mind on it. Karana had to live all by herself and she made friends with dogs, birds and the Aleut girl named Tutok. She belived that the white men's ship would return someday to rescue her and they did come back eventually. This book also teaches you not to panic or be discoureged when you are dealing with difficult problems.
Rating: Summary: Island of the Blue Dolphins Review: I thought this book was fascinating. This book is sad and good. It is about a girl named Karana, she jumps of the boat to stay with her brother. The next dayshe finds him dead with wolfs circling him. She stays on the all alone on the island for 18 years. If you read this book I think you will really enjoy reading it.

Rating: Summary: Island of the Blue Dolphins Review: Island of the Blue Dolphins was the best book I read in the fourth grade. The story is about a young girl who jumps off a ship to return to the island and her younger brother. Now they're both stranded on an island. Next thing that happens is that Ramo, the young girl's brother, dies. Now she is going to be all alone and maybe a little scared. She's going to have to hunt and fish for herself. My favorite part in the book was when the boat came to rescue her. The reason why this is a classic is because of the wonderful description, like the time when Korana, the young girl jumps off of the ship for her little brother Ramo. Another reason, you can picture things in your mind. This is why I think this book deserves 5 stars.
Rating: Summary: Wow!! Review: This is a great, classic book. You must read this one. I read it years ago in school, and I've just finished re-reading it. Wow. There was so much of it that I'd forgotten, the most important being that it's based on a true story. A young girl is left behind, all by herself, on an island, and she finds ways to deal with it. It's a good human story about courage, dignity, survival, and spirit. You will not be disappointed.
