Summary: Island of the Blue Dolphins
Review: Scott O'Dell's book "Island of the Blue Dolphins" is a very interesting book. Not anly is it based on a real event but the fiction part is very realistic too. It was kind of suspenceful and has a unique story line to it. It has intense detail down to the color of the sails on cerain ships. This book I recommend to all readers because it is a brilliant work and is very interesting.

Summary: Goes beyond the typical survival book
Review: "Island of The Blue Dolphins" is a classic in every sense in my opinion. After most of her people are killed by some Russians called the Aleuts, Karana has to live on The Island of The Blue Dolphins. While there, she has to learn how to survive alone by making shelter, her own food, etc. She also has to find a way to fend herself of the wild dogs should they turn to attack her, while also watching the seas to make sure the Aleuts don't come back. Will she be on the island alone forever? Will she be rescued by a ship? Karana has to find a way to survive long enough to find out.

"Island of The Blue Dolphins" is one of the best books I've ever read. Unlike many stories of survival, the author, Scott O'Dell doesn't ever sympathize much with what Karana has been through. In the end, it makes the book even better that he didn't reflect too much on Karana's losses. Once you get to a certain point in the story, it will grip you into reading it and not let go until the book is over. There's a lot of things about the book that you probably won't ever forget once you read it. It's pretty much a great and unforgettable book about survival and it couldn't have been written any better if you ask me.

I recommend anybody who likes great books that are about survival to get "Island of The Blue Dolphins." It's so good that it goes beyond the typical survival book, and you'll know what I mean when you finish reading it. It has elements of many other kinds of stories, and it's very compelling. It's a 5 star book without a doubt.

Summary: From a parent's perspective
Review: My daughter who is 8 1/2 began reading this for a book report. She is an excellent reader but was very upset with the beginning of the book. Since this is so well written a young girl easily projects herself into Karana and so reading about the girl watching her father die (her mother is dead already) and then finding her dead brother can understandably be upsetting. After that point she began to 'get into' the book. As her mother I read the book to know what she was reading and as an adult found the book very moving. I did feel however, a little disappointed with the ending that I felt seemed cut short.

Summary: A Journey
Review: I had to read the Island of the Blue Dolphin for a book report in sixth grade. At first, I thought it was boring because I am not into adventures. But, when I read deeper into the context I realize it wasn't an adventure it was a matter of life or death for Karana. Scott O'Dell has his own style and he painted a great picture of what the story was about in my head. That is why I would rate it a 4. I wouldn't rate it a 5 because of the ending it seems to me the author had a variety of run-ons about her fight that was not needed and he kind of rushed the end.

Summary: Island of the Blue Dolphins
Review: Wonapalei has lived on the island for 18 years after white people take away the people of her village, leaving her brother and her behind to fend for themselves. Soon afterwards her brother is killed by a pack of wild dogs. She mourns her younger sibling's death but moves on to make her own way in life. She creates her own house; makes her own weapons, rebuilds a canoe, kills off a pack of wild dogs, and hides from a shipful of Aleuts hunting for otter. She also tames a wild dog and then his son, befriends a baby otter, and discovers a great bond with a girl from the Aleut tribe. "Live to tell the tale of your life." This book was very interesting and descriptive. I liked it a lot because it describes everything she does in great detail. I give this book 5 stars

Summary: An Entertaining Account of Survival
Review: The book Island of the Blue Dolphins is a facinating story of survival. I liked this book because it included a lot of details that helped to create a clear image in my mind. The only part that i was slightly disapointed in, was the ending. The whole story up until this part was full of details, and then the ending was short and simple. If you enjoy stories of survival, you'll definately enjoy the story of Karana and the Island of the Blue Dolphins.

Summary: A little SLOW
Review: We had to read this book in school twice and it never got any better. At the begginning and end it was exciting and you were even more excited to read on but slowly it fell...slower....it was repeating itself. Then and then high point! It's exciting again! And then it's back to not very exciting. Throughout the book it seemed like the author was in no rush to finish it... And it has a fast ending and it finishes like that! Even though it had a lot of dull part it did have some parts that were worth reading. It's a classic and it's your decision so find out for yourself.

Summary: A Great Summer Book
Review: I would recommend this book. You should read this book if you enjoy reading books in which people need to survive on their own. I loved the way that Karana would tell the story without getting distracted. I agree with how the author wrote the book in first person. It really let me understand what the character was thinking and feeling. The reason I thought it deserved four stars instead of five was due to the ending. I wanted Karana to be reunited with her family.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: BORING
Review: I read this book for fourth grade literature, and the only reason that I kept reading was because it was required. I thought that the quest for Karana's survival was at the best mediocre. There were long, tedious details about everyday life that didn't grab attention, and the storyline about foreign people bumping off the indigneous natives is getting old. And why is it that people are always making the foreigners the bad guys? The Island of the Blue Dolphins was an uninteresting, dreary novel that I think didn't really deserve the Newbery Medal.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Different From The Book
Review: I read this book in 5th grade and it was really good. My class and I were really excited about the movie. When we watched it we would say "Hey they forgot about this part!" I say you either watch the movie or read the book since they are different and the movie laeves out a lot of the story. I have to say thoough it was beautifuly acted though.
