Rating: Summary: has some gaps, but excellent if you have imagination! Review: no wonder the author wrote this - it's every person's fear at some level, to be utterly abandoned and isolated...let alone on an island, for eighteen years. o'dell doesn't get much into the emotional stuff, her feelings of loss or loneliness, which is where you need imagination as a reader, to fill in the gaps. it feels to me like the ultimate story of loneliness and isolation, a really horrible story in a way, but the beauty comes in that karana doesn't give up, fends for herself, hunts, traps, even makes pretty clothes...and she makes do with what company she has - dogs, birds, otters. (actually, not that odd of a story - i think there are lots of people in our towns and cities in the year 2001 who are that isolated...) but just imagine, being left alone on an island for eighteen years? sounds like hell to me. i really admire her for surviving and not giving up hope. one question: why did she give up so quickly on building a new canoe and paddling for the mainland after just one failure? she had the capacity to make a good canoe, and she was strong and brave, right? i mean, she spent like three years just trying to spear an octopus for fun, so to me it just doesn't make sense.

Rating: Summary: Enduring Childhood Literature Review: I first read this book as a young girl in the early 60's and still gravitate towards the same copy I read in my children's elementary school library when I visit. When it was made into a movie and played at the local drive-in, I begged my parents to see it more than once. My oldest daughter, now 20, has read the book and when my youngest daughters, 5 & 7, are old enough, they'll read it also.I'm not certain what there is about Island of the Blue Dolphins that continues to draw me back to it over and over; I find myself scanning book lists for the title even though I already own it and have read it more times than I can count. It's the one I say is my favorite when anyone asks what's your favorite book of all time. My most vivid memory of the story is the hate Karana had for the wild dogs and the ironic love she developed for one of the pups who became her companion and defender. It's a wonderful story and belongs in every family library.
Rating: Summary: My thoughts on Island of the Blue Dolphins Review: I thought this book was excellent! Mr. O'dell did a really good job of describing the island, her situtations, and the things and ways she used natural recourses and tools. I felt like I was watching her and listing to the exciting things she did. The book was sad and her real life story was really sad also. The way she used the natural resources was incredible. I would recommend this book to a person who enjoys emotional and interesting books.

Rating: Summary: Great movie Review: Lived near where this was filmed. Read book when I was very young then came the movie... So good. Good family movie. A real bitter sweet movie I loved it then and now, 20 years later.
Rating: Summary: The best ever Review: I thought the book was very good, and it's very interesting . It's about the aleuts and otter skins but the ishand doesn't want him to take the otter skins . But the aleuts come back every year. My favorite part in the book was when Ramo kept trying to change his name , because he was becoming the king of the island now , because his father died. I like the ending because there was only two people left alive.
Rating: Summary: Great book! Review: "Island of the blue dolphins" book review I read the book "island of the blue dolphins" and it's exciting plot and characters grabbed me right from the beginning. One of the best things about it was it's intriguing setting. It's set on a remote island covered with lush vegetation and the whole island is shaped like a giant dolphin. The author gives an incredible mental picture when he says "In the pacific there is an island that looks like a fish sunning it's self in the sea. Around it blue dolphins swim, otters play, and sea elephants and birds abound." The whole story is based on how a young Indian girl names Karana braves years alone on this island. It's filled with hardships such as when karana is attacked by wild dogs on the island. She must now learn to kill her own food and build her own shelter. There is no way to contact anybody and karana has never done anything like this before. I highly recommend this book to anybody who enjoys adventure or survival books.
