Rating: Summary: The best book I have ever read. Review: "A Child Called It" is by far the best book I have ever read. It is about a child named David whose mother is beyond cruel to him. She rarely ever feeds him, she doesn't even feed him once a week most of the time. Whenever he goes to school he sometimes steals food, and he is then punished for it when he gets home. His mother uses very odd and very cruel ways to punish him, she makes him drink Clorox and Bleach until his tongue starts turning raw and bleeding. She stabbed in the stomach with a knife and didn't even take him to the hospital, she made him continue with his chores as if nothing was wrong. David's father tries to help him at first, but eventually gives up and moves out of the house. This is a very good book, it is also a very sad book. It is hard to believe that a mother could be so cruel to her own son. He brings a note home from his teacher saying what a good student he was and how he got to name the school newspaper, his mother rips the note into snowflake pieces and tells him that no matter what he does it doesn't impress her because he is an it not a child. While you are reading the book you can actual feel like you are there with David going through what he is going through.
Rating: Summary: Too terrible to be true? Not at all. Review: I read this book and wished that young David could have been my brother when I was growing up in my emotionally abusive home. Things wouldn't have been great, but they would have been a lot better for him than with his own family. I would have loved to put my arms around that little boy and draw from his inner strength, and love him the way he deserved.
Rating: Summary: Dave Pelzer Review: Today, I heard Dave Pelzer speak at a grade-wide assembly. His words of wisdom were so convincing. He taught us to stand up for what we believe in, not get caught up in what other people do or think, and never start something you know you can't stop doing (alcohol use). Dave has been through so much, yet he does not whine, cry, or feel bad for himself- he has moved on with his life in a great way. Dave has become a counselor for those unfortunate kids in detention homes. He has got on with his life by becoming a motivational speaker for different groups and schools. He has also won four Olympic Gold Medals, been honored by the President as a great person, and won a World award- all for RECOVERING, MOVING ON, and INFLUENCING OTHERS to make right decisions in their lives. After today, I have a new perspective on life! I plan to read Mr. Pelzer's book very soon. I hope this helped you all in understanding the book even a little bit better.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book I have read about an account of Child Abuse Review: This book was highly recommended to me from a friend. I started this book yesterday and finished it today. I was engrossed in this book that it made me think of another child abuse case: Lisa Steinberg. I don't know if anyone has heard of that case but as I was reading this book, I kept thinking, How can a parent do this to their own flesh and blood. Mr. Pelzer, I would like to commend you for writing this book. It took a lot of courage and determination. Thank you for writing such a wonderful book
Rating: Summary: A Story All Should Read Review: It is difficult to put into words the effect this book can have on a person. Dave Pelzer is truly a hero. His story is courageous. I have encouraged my friends to read this book and they have all been touched in amazing ways as well. It is certainly an incredible story.
Rating: Summary: In the minority Review: While this is near the end of a long line of reviews I would like to agree with the few who were as appalled by this book as I. As a former foster parent of severely abused children I find Mr. Pelzer's "true" account fantastic and sensationalistic. There are too many unanswered questions regarding the adults involved in his life. He paints himself as a hero - while he did what any one of us or the other many abused children do every day - he did his best to survive in a horrible situation. While I do not discount his pain I do question how accurate his memory is. His account seems the exaggerated memory of a child. And what is the redeeming value of the book? What is the reader to learn from his pain? Mr. Pelzer: get more therapy and move on with your life. There are plenty of survivors out there doing wonderful things - join them!
Rating: Summary: A Child Called "IT" Review: My friend was reading this book and told me to read it because it was really good. At first i didn't believe her until I sat down and started reading it and then I couldn't put this book down until I was finished reading it. I ran out the next day and bought Davids other two books. It was that good. I cryed a alot while reading it, because it was very sad what David had to go thought. No one should have to go thought what his mother put his did to him. This book opened a new door in my life, because in a way I didn't know what was happening in the world around me. I was brought up by 2 loving parents for the first 10-11 years of my life and even after that I was shelded by what was happening in the world. I didn't think parents could be that mean to there own child. David is a very brave man to have gotten though his childhood years and then to sit down and write this book and two others. This is a must read book. I've told all my friends about this book and the others.
Rating: Summary: Very touching book Review: Once I picked this book up I could not put it down. I read and read until there was no more to read. This book is so good I went out and bought his other two books. He shows strength in a way I would have nevered thought of.
Rating: Summary: Very moving Review: This is a brilliant book, its so moving. His mother must be such a monster that she can do all that sick stuff to an innocent child. I'd just like to say to the person that said this book needed a story line.....get a life, its not meant to be a thriller you get pleasure out of its meant to move you and make you realise about human nature.
Rating: Summary: What A Fascinating Story Review: Oh my Gosh! What Dave Pelzer has been through. After reading this book, I went out and bought ten more copies to give away. What I was giving away was hope! That Mr. Pelzer could go through what he did and come back as strong as he is is nothing short of a miracle. Dave shares his whole life with us and holds nothing back! While some of it is graphic and hard to read, it is ultimately a story of triumph. The book is not an easy read- I had to literally put the book down several times to wipe away the tears- but I believe I am a better person for having read the book. It puts things into perspective. God bless you, Mr. Pelzer. You are loved.
