Rating: Summary: Dave was a survivor, how many didn't survive? Review: This is such a powerful and moving book about Dave Pelzer and his encounter with one of the deepest forms of child abuse. As an instructor in a community college one of the topics I cover in class is child abuse. This book is now required reading for all the students. He was a survivor, how many of our children don't survive this continuing abuse?
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: I loved this book. One day, thumbing through books at the bookstore, I found this book and coudn't put it down. I immediatly bought it, and read it. I am 11, and I got the book at ten. I can't wiat to get the squel for my birthday. It took me tops, three hour to read this book, and I have reread it almost twenty times!
Rating: Summary: This book breaks your heart. You cry for the author. Review: I am a social worker for Families and Children's Services. Everyday, I work with abused and neglected children. It never ceases to be a challenge to unravel the complexities of a family inflicted with substance abuse, physical abuse, etc. When I read this book, it broke my heart. It grounded and centered me as to the significance of my work. But it made me cry for the experience of this poor child. It taught me a lot about courage.
Rating: Summary: So glad to hear that other people had problems with this too Review: I felt very confused after reading this book. I bought it for a friend who asked for it as a Christmas present. I decided to skim through it before wrapping it up. I'm sorry I did. I myself experienced severe abuse as a child but nothing like this. This was very sensationalistic, in my opinion. I think the best comment made so far was from a reviewer who said "My money doesn't come from a money tree in the backyard and I can't keep buying $10.00 paperbacks that hopefully finish a story that could have been finished in the first book." It does seem like an obvious marketing ploy. Large font, tiny books, trilogy format, sensationalistic writing. There are many wonderfully written books that deal with the subject of child abuse in a far more enlightening manner: "Too Scared to Cry", "They cage the animals at Night", and anything by Alice Miller. I am very sorry that the author experienced this abuse (if he indeed did) but here in canada that one book cost me nearly thirty dollars and I won't be shelling out more for sequels that are just going to continue making me want to throw up. I shared similar feeling to all of the less than four star reviewers. If you want to read this, I'd get it from the library first.
Rating: Summary: one of the most touching books i have ever read! Review: i look at child abuse a hole other way. each child has his or her own story but this brings you to the life and the horor of this child. i look at my parents a whole other way now.
Rating: Summary: The most inspiring book I have ever read. Review: David Pelter is a very courageous young man. It is encouraging to read about such abuse and see the person come out a victor. Even though we cringe at reading such abuse, where would our country be without the passion and compassion that the abused bring to the forefront of our society. I commend Mr. Pelzer for having the courage to come forward and tell his story, so more of us can look at him and know that we have something to hope for.Gives me hope for tomorrow. I read both of his books and am looking forward to the third in the series.
Rating: Summary: I am looking forward to "A man Named David. Review: I read both "A child called it" and "The lost boy", both were fantastic. David desribes himself as a young person who teaches himself how to survive under his conditions that he has to deal with. I give hime a pat on the back for what he has dealt with. He has opened up a whole new perspective for myself and how it is necesary for us to help abused ones. This book was relayed to me as well as the sequal, through my girlfriends uncle. I am looking forward to reading the third book. P.S. Anyone know when "A man named David will be realeased.?"
Rating: Summary: WHAT A WAKE-UP CALL!!!!!!! Review: Being an abused child, Neglect from my alcoholic, workaholic father and Sexually abused by my brother, I never realized that it was OK to cry until I read this book. I feel more like I am somebody, not just a number, or a statistic. Thank you Dave for today is truely the first day of the rest of my life! God Bless!!!
Rating: Summary: Love is unconditional and children wait so long... Sad Review: We are a foster family and this book was read by many of us. We are affected by many children some we will adopt and some we will never reach as they await the hope that all will get better and they will be reunited with birth families. We now have a better understanding in what goes through a young childs mind in reguards to an abusive parent no matter what love is unconditional. This has been a times a hard pill to swallow but this book helped us so it must have reached so many others. I applaud the author for all he has overcome and will continue to overcome. God bless you all It gave us better insight of what a child and what he sees in the most regretable of times. This was a great sad story by a very brave man. I applaud him and all he has overcome and will continue to overcome.
Rating: Summary: heart wrenching Review: I'm just 17 and I read this story not expecting to like it or finsih it at all. I read it from 7pm to 10 pm and i LOVED IT!! I cried and had to put it down just to dry my tears before i read another page. It made me angry and suprised that this goes on in our country and no one noticed. I for one am more aware of how lucky I am and to be more grateful. Thank you Dave for sharing your pain and happiness. I read the Lost Boy, too. His life does get better.
