Rating: Summary: I find this book a very interesting. Review: I am only into the third chapter. How a situation like this can go un noticed for so long. I understand that at that time child abuse was not aknowlaged. Sad that this boy had to suffer so. Do we as parents see alittle of ourselve in here?
Rating: Summary: Absolutely gut wrenching and inspirational! Review: I just finished reading David's story, and although I read it through my tears I couldn't put it down. As a recovering person myself his courage to keep faith in God is just so utterly inspiring, it's beyond words. Thank you for shareing your journey of darkness into light. It's deeply touched my soul.
Rating: Summary: The most COURAGEOUS child ever. Review: Upon reading this book and the sequel (which I also whole-hartedly recommend) one cannot feel sorry for him/herself. This child's story is a hard read, but an important one. Through his hardships, the reader learns how important love is to a child's life. David did a fine job in his writing style and the book moves through time very well. BUT-keep your tissues nearby, you'll need them.
Rating: Summary: So why doesn't the "system" help us to help them? Review: At the behest of my sister (who after 2 years and thousands of $$ was finally able to adopt such a child), I will be reading the book and I'm sure I'll be furious at the system for allowing this. My lividness however is aimed at the system that puts all types of obstacles in my way to prevent my adopting or fostering these children who need a whole, complete and sane family. All the "middle persons" wanting to get their "cut" in placing these children in a decent home has me furious at the marketing and selling of humans for profit. I would do all I could to do my part in adopting abandoned or neglected children, if only they didn't make it cost so much! I have, after all, my own children to raise; why can't the system cut some slack and allow those who truly want to help another human being do so without costing us and their lifetime? It's inhuman how these children are being held back in life ...and all for a few greenbacks. Give me the opportunity to help another human being (at cost) and these books (however true) will never need to be written! I welcome sane opinions.
Rating: Summary: A heartbreaking book Review: I saw "A Child Called "It"" in a bookstore and started reading it. I got so absorbed in it that I lost track of the time. My Mom wouldn't buy it for me, so I had to wait about a month before I finally got it. When I did get, I just picked up where I left off and finished in about 45 minutes. This book is a bit intense, but I definetly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Awesome, but... Review: I read this book about a year ago. I found it while browsing in a bookstore and picked it up because the title intrigued me. A few pages later I was hooked. My mom wouldn't buy it for me, so I sat in the store and read the whole thing in about two hours. I've read the sequel too. The title was great, and the book was wonderful. Poor David. His descriptions of his mother's abuse made my stomach turn. I wish there had been more emotion in it though. It seemed very matter-of-fact. Not that that's a bad thing, but I like really emotional books.
Rating: Summary: An amazing story! Review: This book blew me away. Once I started to read it, I couldn't put it down. Anyone who works with children or teens should read it because it makes you realize that child abuse is an unfortunate reality and something that must be dealt with, rather than ignored. Pelzer writes with alarming detail as he tells about his abusive childhood. It's almost unbelievable at times, some of the things that happen to him. Be prepared to be moved to tears.
Rating: Summary: I could not put the book down, Review: I dont even know what made me purchase the book, I had never heard of it. But once I picked it up and began reading it I could not put it down. I read the book in one day, and the anticipation still awaits because I have not yet read the sequal and am dying to find out what happens next. Do not have second thoughts about reading this book, it will give you an emotional perspective on child abuse. It will make you open your eyes and your mind, and make you have second thoughts when a commercial comes on talking about child abuse and you're about to turn the channel. Its a great book, emotional and touching, but great.
Rating: Summary: Hard to believe Review: I just finished reading "A Child Called It". I am disappointed with myself for letting it draw me in as it did. Throughout the book I found myself in complete amazement that this is a "biography". This book lacks authenticity and validity by failing to reference what is happenening in the real world during the duration of this abuse. If the author/victim has the ability to recall so vividly the feelings and emotions expressed, I found myself trying to finish it to assure myself this really hapened, looking for some type of validation. This reads more like a "abuse fantasy" by an individual who took the easy way to make a quick buck to get into the lecture business. The world does not need another "inspirational speaker". Why would a person choose to expose themself in such a way only to add on the back cover that he is one of "The most effective and respected communicators addressing corporate groups, conventions" etc. Compelling but leaves you feeling like a sucker.
Rating: Summary: What a good and scary book Review: This book is one of the most scary books I have ever read. His life as a child was really hell. But he showed courage when most would have just givin up and died. His fight left him with no friends. I could not do what he has done if I were in this situation. Over all, a good and scary book.
