Rating: Summary: I said the hell with it after plodding through 200 pages. Review: I kept plodding along, page after dull page, searching for whatever it was that so many other people had apparently found interesting in this book. After more than 200 pages, I gave up. I'm forced to conclude that this was one of those cultural phenomena where people buy something or go to see something because it somehow became fashionable. And, once having been duped, nobody wants to admit it, so they continue to recommend it to others. Because of the book experience, I have no interest in seeing the movie version.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely fantastic...... Review: This is a wonderfully engrossing and interesting book. It draws in the reader like nothing else, and is truly a fine piece of literature. I recommend reading this novel before the movie, which, as I found out, is better. I saw the movie first and I would have enjoyed the book even more immensely had I read it first. The movie is excellent, though.
Rating: Summary: It captures the persistence of the "old south" in modern tim Review: John Berendt shows that if you slow down enough to smell the flowers, you can notice some truly interesting things about your fellow man ( the Lady Chablis being a case in point). The book was a thoroughly enjoyable read !
Rating: Summary: Suprisingly enjoyable and rich. Review: I didn't want to read this book. My book club voted to read it anyway. I was suprised to find that I enjoyed it from the very start. John Berendt really knows how to write the dialog of each of the charactors that really reveals that person's character and personality. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to take a mini-trip to Savannah, and have a look at life in the world of the "old guard" of the south.
Rating: Summary: I must visit Savannah Review: I thought the book was very good. I've always been interested in the South. The book kept my interest cover to cover.
Rating: Summary: I NEVER WANTED IT TO END Review: I received the book from my husband for Christmas after we had visited Savannah. I couldn't let it out of my sight until I finished. I'm waiting for the details to fade from my memory so I can read it again. Bravo.
Rating: Summary: Distrubingly funny... You won't be able to put it down. Review: I read Midnight with little expectation, but I was sucked in after two pages. I laughed aloud and annoyed the family, even the tragedy of the novel is told with a good dose of humor. However, if you are easily offened, this is not the book for you (sex, murder and night clubs included)! Great read for a rainy vacation week and those of us with a sense of humor that is a little off. One of my new favs!
Rating: Summary: YUCK! Review: Okay, I guess I'm weird or something, but I really did not get this book. What was the point, the plot, or whatever? It just seemed like some guy hanging out in Savannah meeting a bunch of weirdos. I can't believe such people like this even exist. This book was so well hyped that I felt like I'd be missing out on something if I didn't read it. Now I know what that something is. Like, maybe a migraine!
Rating: Summary: Spellbinding from the first page! Review: I read Midnight while still a graduate student and after having made a brief trip to Charleston and Savannah. Having been to Savannah made the book even more enjoyable. The characters are splendid (especially Lady Chablis), and the plot is gripping from the first page. And what makes it even more enticing is that it is true (for the most part)! I heartily recommend this book to all. But bypass the movie until you have finished the book-there are major differences, and you will probably find the book more compelling.
Rating: Summary: Laugh-out-loud funny Review: I found this book to be thoroughly enjoyable. It moved at the pace of life in the south, where it is often too hot to move in a hurry and hostilities are rarely deeply buried. I was laughing out loud in several sections and found it to be very representational of the time I have spent in Savannah and in Beaufort, SC. The rich characterizations were true to what I have come to appreciate as one who has lived in the region. A joyride from start to finish.
