Rating: Summary: Very Well Written But... Review: I found the movie more interesting. The book was written like a mystery fiction which I enjoyed. The storyline left me a little empty, but seeing the movie made the book more interesting. Recommend it? Depends on who the person is.
Rating: Summary: Ohhh, Baby! You Gotta Dig This One! Review: A South that can nurture such a delightful collection of eccentrics as The Lady Chablis and Luther Driggers can't be all bad. This book is pure summer delight in its range of characters and storytelling. After reading the book, I looked forward to seeing the movie. With the exception of seeing the Lady Herself in action, the movie was one BIG Let Down! Why Clint Eastwood and his screen writers thought they could do better than John Berendt in telling this story is beyond me. There is a reason why this book became a best-seller. Mr. Eastwood should have paid closer attention to the book in his film adaptation. Mr. Berendt's Savannah is a far more honest and satisfying place to be than Mr. Eastwood's celluloid farce.
Rating: Summary: Captivating! Review: I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. Once I started reading, though, I was hooked on the quirky characters and the descriptions of a city that seemed too strange to be true. As a newly transplanted resident of the South, I thought Berendt had a way of seeing things with an astonished eye just as I would (and sometimes still do). I enjoyed the way the history and the story were broken into two parts.
Rating: Summary: My New Favorite Book. Review: There is probably not much that I can say about this book that hasn't already been mentioned by another Amazon customer. I will, however, say this. "Midnight" was the first book which I bought from Amazon, and after reading it I know that I made a wise investment. What strikes me the most about this book is that it is not fiction. The characters whom the reader meets in this tale of Savannah society at it's most bizarre are outlandish, outspoken and just plane out there. So head out there with them, and enjoy the story.
Rating: Summary: Loved it! Review: I really enjoyed this book as I am fascinated by all things having to do with the South. I realized after having reccomended this book to my cousin that there was not as much "action" as most people probably expected. However, even without the murder trial story line, I would have loved this book simply because of the fascinating people in it. I love "people-watching," and that is what this book is; it's "people watching" in Savannah. Wonderful!
Rating: Summary: Tedious Review: I am probably one of the few that disliked this book. I found the focus on the author's life to be incredibly dull and my real reason for reading the book, the murder, was covered in a few miserable chapters. It is the only book I have ever purchased that I felt was a waste of money.
Rating: Summary: Great book, hard to put down, could read it again and again. Review: Good from page 1. Really made you feel like you had seen Savannah.
Rating: Summary: Fascinating Review: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a wonderful book. It keeps you interested and reads like a work of fiction. The characters of Savannah are engrossing, with their stories you don't even need to mention the murder mystery. The characters also don't seem as crazy as they do in the movie. Chablis is fantastic as well as Joe Odem. This is a definite recommendation. I can't even think of a reason not to recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST non-fiction book ever ! Review: Most books bore me, but this book grabbed my attention and would not let go. Very captivating. I have been to Savannah and reading this book sent me right back to the historic district. John's portrail of the city is majical. I would recomend this book to anyone who enjoys a good book. If you intend to see the movie you may be dissapointed, the movie doesn't have half the humor or charm of the book.
Rating: Summary: Rich and deliciously wicked Review: Being Greek, I know little about the United States, apart from what you get to see on TV and the movies. John Berendt's book gives a new, delightful insight into a country that isn't about just Hollywood and Wall Street, but also about rich tradition and unforgetable characters. Made me want to visit Savannah, Georgia and I should think that says a lot about the book and its author.
