Summary: Delightful reading!
Review: The book was highly entertaining. The people Berendt met were more interesting and colorful than characters in many novels. Through the anecdotes, I got a flavor for life in Savannah. "Good and evil" not only describes Minerva's rituals, but also the people in the book, who are multi-faceted.

Summary: Not a great book
Review: This book has quirky but only mildly interesting characters. They carried on so much they got very boring. They all are also very selfish and self- centered that I ended up not caring about anyone.

The story of Conrad Aiken was good though.

Summary: Brilliant and refreshing!
Review: This was a delightful read. The characters, oh the characters, were simply wonderful; was it really a true story? This book had everything that a book shold have; diverse characters, a good plot line and humour. So many books these days are geared for one particular readership or another but this book anyone can pick up and see him/her or glimps there of in it. Wish Mr. Berendt would write up a sequel; even if he truly has to make it up!

Summary: A very entertaining book with humerous, colorful characters.
Review: I did not know this was a true story until after I had read it. I am from the South and have relatives in Savannah and it IS a beautiful and colorful city. Eccentric characters exist in all places, but they are very abundant in the South. I related well to the attitudes and humanity of all the people portrayed in this story and found it to be an excellent read!

Summary: It's worth checking out of the Library
Review: Ya, the characters are eclectic and odd. So what. I think the book could have been actually outstanding if the writing had been more than mediocre.

Summary: A juicy tale, I can't believe it's a true story
Review: I loved this book. (I've read it twice.) The charachter studies and rich storytelling really brought these people and events to life.

Summary: well written book about real life characters
Review: Midnight In The Garden Of Good And Evil is a marvelous travelog of Savannah. As I read the book, I made notes of places to see, and planned a wonderful and enlightening itinerary. The characters are brilliantly portrayed, and the events are all true with beautiful and historic Savannah as the backdrop. One of the most enjoyable books I've ever read.

Summary: And the moral is?
Review: If this book remained on the New York Times Bestseller's List for four years, then the competition must have really been abysmal. My recommendation prior to purchasing any present-day author is to first preview it at the library before you waste your money. If the characters in the book are representative of the citizens of Savannah then they should be embarrased. If they aren't, then they should be embarrassed. My recomendation to Berendt is that he needs to associate himself with people higher on the food chain. Joe Odom, "Lady" Chablis, Danny Hansford, Luther Driggers, can be found any day of the week on Jerry Springer, Montel Williams, Ricki Lake, Maury Povitch, ad nauseum. How is it that real authors, such as Melville, Hugo, Conrad, Tolstoy, and more contemporary authors such as Steinbeck, had the ability to develop charatcters of substance whose vocabularly consisted of more words than f... you? Place this at the top of the heap when people look for explanations for the dumbing of America. For contemporary reading, this book pales in comparison to Charles Frazier's Cold Mountain. Ada Monroe versus Corrine? Which would you like your daughter to emulate? If you haven't read either of these books, Ada is a women of susbstance while Corinne has hinges in her heels. This book has done exceedingly well, I suppose thanks to a herd mentality in a society where a good economy is a solid defense for a President who would fit quite nicely into this collection of derelicts, perverts and miscreants. Inside the Garden of Evil is a more appropo title. If this books captures the essence of Savannah then maybe General Sherman shouldn't have been so kind.

Summary: the south will continue
Review: I loved the description of Savannah and could see the dogwood trees and the sqare. The people in the book showed the true essence of the South. They saved face with the outside world, but underneath it all was a turbulent life. Whether Mr. Williams was acutually a killer is left to the reader

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Masterfully written with colorful characters...
Review: This is perhaps the best written story I've read in some time. Mr. Berendt has wonderfully combined grand descriptions of Savannah, colorful characters (most if not all based on real people), bits of history, real-life drama, and so on to make Midnight In The Garden of Good and Evil a pleasure to read. As for the raw "in-your-face" humor of "The Lady Chablis"? I'm looking forward to my next trip to Savannah and hope to catch her act! Two thumbs up! (The movie was well done too but the book gives you so much more.)
