Review: I enjoyed Artemis Fowl a lot! It was verey intresting.I would only recomend this book to any advanced reader. It was slightly hard to understand, but it still was great. If you liked Harry Potter, you'll love Artemis Fowl.

Review: "Ah Faries! Cute little beings with fluffy pink skirts and sparkle-covered wands." Is imediately what comes to mind when you hear the word fairytale. Fortunately, there is a remedy for this generalization, "Artemis Fowl" breaks boundaries wherever it dares to tread. A 12-year-old who is smarter than the adults around him, fairies who are armed and more evolved technologically then humans. Colfer doesn't shy away from anything that may take on by surprise or perhaps darken the tone a little.

Colfer creates a criminal mastermind who should be in middle school, a group of fairies that are as scary as an FBI, and yet he creates no real bad guy. A complex task to say in the least. By telling the story through many a chapter that could very well begin with "back at the ranch" (though they goodness they don't) you get to see the kindnes in all of the characters. At first, you obviously think Artemis will be our little hero, but then you realize that he is down-right crafty, and mean. Once you meet the fairy Holly, you of course think "Aaah! Here is our fearless good guy!" once again, you realize that the fairies aren't all that kind either.

I have noticed that it has been compared to Harry Potter many times, and obviously, when people read this, it is a let down. "There is no mystical joy in this book!" people say, "No clear defined good guy-bad guy relationship!" True. Artemis Fowl is in no way like Harry Potter. A young male protagonist that has something to do with magic of some sort doesn't always have to be a clone of Harry. This book has a darker tone with some dark imagery and language. It can be rather icky at times (nothing older kids can't handle) it is definitely a good read.

Artemis Fowl is gripping, exciting and pleasently dark. A must-read for kids ages 12 and up.

Summary: Not exactly impressive
Review: I think what I find least appealing about this book is that our "hero"--who we are supposed to admire, relate to, and root for--is simply a thief, and not a very interesting one at that. If he were truly as clever as Sherlock Holmes (he's certainly as cocky), I would at least be interested in his intellect. Yet his advantage stems almost entirely from the array of technology available to him as a result of his wealth. Not even his fleeting concern for his mother or his hostage make him remotely sympathetic. I am impressed by Colfer's imaginative machinery, but it too often serves to mask the weak plotline and ill-developed characters.

Summary: Video game mayham meets Fantasy
Review: Frankly, when I heard all the hype about this book, I went out and got a copy. I was sorely disappointed. The concept that in the world of fantasy, the battle is "everything" really repelled me. The gore and rapid-fire distruction reminded me of the mindless video games some kids play for hours - the characters were shallow and while I liked the idea - " boy wants to locate a real one" I did not like the commando attitude by the fairy people.This book is a weak imitation of CS Lewis, a weak substitute for The Hobbit world I love, and won't satisfy kids who love Harry Potter. I'm surprised that movie rights have been purchased. I, for one, won't go.

Summary: pretty good, fun to read
Review: i thought that this was a pretty good book. there's no reason to compare it to harry potter, so don't. i though that the concept of it was interesting and that it was different from a lot of the books that i've read. the idea of fairies having their own world underground, and having them rely more on technology than magic was interesting. i think that their world seemed more structured and regulated than i would have magined. the book was fun to read. it didn't seem like all the characters were completely developed, especially artemis, but i would definitely buy a sequel to find out more. i definitely thought it was a cute, fun to read book.

Summary: Fabulous!
Review: This was a wonderful story. I was tempted to compare it to Harry Potter at first, but then realized that this book is too different. The characterization, the plot, and the silliness are marvelous. I could not put this book down and had to read it all in one sitting. I loved that the main character was not the "good guy" and that our leading lady was a tough elf. The author did a very good job in portraying both sides as having shades of grey in their characters rather than black and white/good versus bad. I am a teacher and recommend this as a read aloud for 4th grade and up and as a great book for home or classroom library.

Summary: Extrenely Disapointed
Review: My sister read this book and loved it. So I decided to give it a try. I was very disapointed. Every one is saying it is a good book, but I just didn't get it. Inside the cover of the book it says that "Artemis thinks he's got them just where he wants them, but then they stop playing by the rules". They referes to the faires and frankly I thought they did not stop playing by the rules. I could never quiete figure out who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. I also did not feel a develpment in the characters. I gave this book 3 stars becouse even though I did not enjoy it, the ideas were good, just not expressed well.

Review: The hype surrounding this book suggests it is a kind of Harry Potter with fairies and it is really a grown-up book disguised as a kids book. I would disagree. This lacks the subtlety and complexity of Harry Potter and while the story is fast-paced it is truly childish.
