Summary: Fun book
Review: This book was not deep. It's also not a Harry Potter knock off. But it is a fun read. I read the whole thing in a day. It took a few minutes to get into though and I almost gave up, but kept chugging along anyway as the characters thoughts and dialogue was witty and cynical. If anything had been too sappy I would've put the book down and never looked back. The interaction between Artemis and the fairies is quite fun once you get used to it. You want to keep reading just to see if Artemis is as smart as he thinks he is. Not to mention that I fell head over heels for the character Butler. Fun read.

Summary: A Fun Adventure!
Review: While this is not the best young adult series, this is still a lot of fun to read. Also, it is a quick read that focuses on an interesting story without a whole lot of useless fluff that some books have.

This is the story of Artemis Fowl, a young genius with two desires in life: gold and the sanity of his mother. To pursue the former he launches an ingenious plan that involves kidnapping a fairy and holder her for ransom for a special fund that the fairies keep. The outlandish characters are fun and interesting as well as the interaction between them.

A recommended read for kids of all ages (even us approaching 30).

Summary: give me a break
Review: This has got to be one of the WORST books I have ever read in my life. The charactors were shallow and half-developed, the plot was ANNOYING and half-developed, and the whole thing was just tediously irritating. It gave me a headache, in fact. The idea of the plot may have been interesting, had it been handled better. Altogether Artemis Fowl was about as deep as a damp paper towel. If you're truly bent on reading this, do yourself a favor and get it from the library before you buy it.

I'll tell you where MY copy is going: donation bin at the library!

Summary: Excellent
Review: This is an excellent book, even for adults. I read (at least) a book a week, but over 95% of those are non-fiction. My wife tries to get me to read fiction, but usually fails (hard for anything to come close to my "Lord of the Rings" type of standard). My son, however, had an excellent idea -- he started a family bookclub where he chose a book for each of us to read and report on in three weeks. This was the book that he chose for me, which I read in a few days.

The plot and characters are creative. I never "knew" so much about fairies! While it was easy reading, I got to know the characters. There was good flow, but still good transitions without appearing choppy. The printing was easy on the eyes and the book was comfortable to hold (which a surprising number of publishers seem to ignore). Definitely recommended for kids 10-15 and also for kids older than that!

Summary: from an adult reader...
Review: Someone recommended this book to me because I said that I was looking for a good fantasy book along the lines of Harry Potter. Although this book deals with fairies, goblins, and trolls, the writing style kept reminding me that it is a "Young Adult" book. I don't feel that way about Rowling's books. I probably shouldn't be comparing the Fowl series to the Potter series, but, as I said, that comparison was made for me. The magical creatures in Artemis Fowl are made too "human" for my taste. They have jet packs to fly, modern sounding assault weapons, and use cliches that come straight from Hollywood. I prefer the way Rowling keeps her magical world primitive, traditional, and somewhat naive of the human world around them. There is a good plot structure here with characters that the reader cares about. There is also a sweet twist at the end which is fulfilling. I think it would be a great choice for around 5th-7th graders. However, I can't say that this is a book that I wished would not end.

Summary: a boy unlike any other
Review: Artemis Fowl is no ordinary boy. He is a 12-year-old genius, who managed to outwit the Fairy people and steal bars of gold. This first book of a series, written by Eoin Colfer, is a masterpiece, intricately weaving the lives of humans and fairy people. Eoin Colfer provides interesting and colorful characters from the ever-reliable bodyguard of Artemis, deceivingly named Butler, to the notoriously funny Mulch Diggums to the smart-aleck Holly Short.

Colfer, being a teacher, puts together two distinct cultures to form one glorious novel. Readers will travel to worlds never before seen, while marvelling at the genius that is Artemis Fowl. And while Artemis may be considered devious, cunning and scheming, the end of Book 1 will leave audience with a sense of fondness for the boy. Artemis Fowl is a must-read for those who like to combine fantasy, real-life, espionage and action.

Summary: Wonderfully written.
Review: Very well written for the audience. The stories are very enriching. I would hope that Colfer might get a little more detailed in technical aspects as something that are mentioned...like gadgets and stuff are quite shallow. Apart from this, I enjoyed the book.

Summary: Not the best, but hey...
Review: So this wasn't the greatest kids fantasy book I've ever read, but it was still fun to read, and trying to decode the language at the bottom of the pages was fun. I hate it when people compare kids books to -other- kids books, like Harry Potter. This is not Harry Potter, so get over it. I'm an older teen, so I think this book would've gotten 5 stars from me if I was a bit younger, but otherwise, it's an interesting read.

Summary: A Book About Genius By A Genius
Review: What I like most about ARTEMIS FOWL is the character of Artemis. He is an evil mastermind, essentially a thief who tries to get back his family's wasted gold. His greatest obstacle is the LEPrecon who have never yet parted with their precious gold. The most exciting part of the book is probably how Artemis drugs himself and Butler, his bodyguard, to avoid being destroyed by the "bio bomb" and to escape the "time field". I love this book.

By "Nuju" aged 10, in Los Angeles.

Summary: Great story if you're under 15
Review: I admit that the story is original in idea. The depth of the characters and the driving actions that progress the story are a little shallow. I enjoyed the book and have read the entire series so it couldn't have been that bad but don't expect to find a Harry Potter equivalent. Overall an enjoyable easy read.
