Rating: Summary: I bought it I read it Review: The book lacks deminsional characters but is fun to read. The characters are stereotypical, the person who wants to take over the world and his servant and obviously the people who try to stop them, in this case fairies. I do, however, recommend this book if you have a few hours to kill for some laughs. I did just buy the third book from the series as I am not totally disinterested. Happy reading!
Rating: Summary: Fowl is DEFINENTLY not Foul Review: This book is amazing! After wandering aimlessly through the library searching for a good book (and failing) my brother (of all people) suggested this book- He still is gloating that I loved it! This book has everything a good book needs and more. Artimas Fowl Junior is 12 years old, rich, and a genius with the brains to out wit any human- Now his goal is to outwit fairys. Artemis's father left on an excursion to the Arctic, then disapeared with a huge chunk of the family fortune, driving Artemis's mother to go insane. Now Artemis vows to regain the familys money by copying the fairys Book- The fairy bible, holding every secret to the Fairys, Sprites, and Dwarves history- Including all of the rules that these creatures must follow. Artemis then kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon unit. To put it lightly- Artimas has picked the wrong fairy to mess with. Artemis and the fairys battle it out- Artemis, with the aid of his comrad Butler, uses the Book to minipulate the fairys using their own rules! But the fairys are smarter then he thinks- Or are they? Find out in this enthralling action packed book! Artimas may seem evil, but this book also shows the softer side of him. Maybe he is just a pre-teen after all. Colfer cleverly writes this book in a way that no creature- man or fairy can resist!
Rating: Summary: Artemis Rocks! Review: I had the pleasure of using this book with my year eight class. After reading it myself in preperation for our unit I was delighted that I would have to study this book closely. This is a fantasy style book that is easy to follow, with vivid descriptions of the settings and characters. The plot is fast paced and as a result, I found it hard to put the book down - I read it it one sitting! This book is a lot of fun and certainly gives the imagination a workout. I recommend this book to people of all ages for a fun and exciting read.
Rating: Summary: The first was actually the best part Review: I was recommended this book, because I liked Harry Potter. Well, it's nothing memorable or special. The main character is a brainy but bratty (not interesting or evil, just spoiled and bratty)kid, who thinks he can conquer the world. He has a faithful manservant, Butler (brave, loyal, dark, yet good)who takes care of him. Arty tries to mess with fairies and a fairy vs. human war begins, when he kidnaps Captain Holly Short (think Clarice Starling in fairy version). Afterwards, mayhem takes over. There's a load of dumb laugh-out-loud jokes repeating themselves, and the author keeps babbling on and on and on about Artemis' technologic eqquipment as opposed to that of the fairies, and automatically makes his main character uninteresting (he has all the means to do everything, so why should we care?). Yes, the plot is fast and there are a few good scenes here and there. However, the big picture just isn't good. This book is instantly forgotten after being read. I read the sequels and they don't get any better, either. So why should anyone care?
Rating: Summary: Good Read, Buy It Review: Artemis Fowl is a great book. Although it has some of the same creatures, it is nothing like Harry Potter. Artemis Fowl is a twelve year old criminal mastermind, who is trying to revive the family "Billionaire Status". Artemis' Dad, Artemis Senior has gone missing in the arctic (Read the 2nd book to find out more, #2 is a little better than this.) With the help of his trusty bodyguard Butler, they go and steal a copy of the fairy bible "THE BOOK". Artemis, becomes the first human to ever translate the book into english. He finds out their secrets, and steals a fairy when she comes to perform her ritual. Little did he know, this was not any old fairy, this was Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon unit. The police force of the underworld. Artemis brings her to his mansion and holds her hostage, so the fairies try to get her back while Artemis tries to get their gold.
Rating: Summary: One Criminal Mastermind + Lots of cool gadgets Review: Artemis Fowl is unlike any book I have ever read before. I's a sure page turner, and will keep you on the edge of your seat. But, I would never compare this book with any other, ESPECIALLY Harry Potter. This is a good book for anyone who likes state of the art gadgets and mysteries.
Rating: Summary: Mixed feelings Review: I had big expectations about this book - expectations that were, ultimately, unfulfilled. Partly it was the hype - as a big Harry fan, I was led to this as a "fill the void" book. But, as others have pointed out, this isn't Harry Potter and comparisons are futile. So, instead, you get a 34 year old man reading a kid's book, enjoying it somewhat but not getting any benefit from being 34! If I was 10 again, I think I would have absolutely loved it, probably given it five stars and the world would be right. Anyway, back to the book. Our hero Artemis Fowl is a very very naughty boy (as the Monty Python team might describe him). Unfortunately, for the world at large, he is also extremely clever and resourceful. Amazingly dedicated for a twelve year old he spends a lot of time, energy and gold searching for the secrets to the fairies. At last he finds a washed-up fairy who he tricks into giving the Booke and uses this to try and get a big stash of gold. The book is very humorous - but it is more of a child's humor than something that will also get adults chortling. It's kind of Terry Pratchett lite! It's a very easy read and I will go ahead and read the rest of them - I'll just have a better idea what I'm going to get. In summary - if you are a child, you'll probably love this book; if you are a child at heart, you might not love it quite so much.
Rating: Summary: A fun, quick read Review: A quick review from JFS: Meet Artemis Fowl II, the heir to a criminal empire, twelve years of age, and smart enough to rule the human world. For many months, Fowl has been traveling the world in search of a fairy. He finally gets a hit and meets a fairy who has been passing as a healer in the human world. Using the information she gives him, Artemis devises a plan to abduct a fairy and take fairy gold for ransom. All goes well until the captive fairy's (Holly) rescuers show up. I was spellbound (darn fairies!) throughout the book. It was well written and told a captivating tale. It's sure to enchant other readers, especially those looking for something post-Harry Potter.
Rating: Summary: Move over Harry and give way Hardy Boys- Review: This is not your "out to save the world" character. Little Artimus Fowl is a criminal mastermind- smart enough to crack the codes of an ancient Faery bible without much brain sweat. Accompanied by the rather huge Butler, his personal body guard, and his little sister Juliet, a bodyguard in training, there's nothing Master Fowl thinks can stop him. Or is there? A delightful, deepthful journey through not only this world and the one below us but into the imagination of a great story teller! Beware- if you read this you're going to be begging for the next one- the "Arctic Incident" and the most recent third one "The Eternity Code." I'm waiting for the fourth one which, if #3 is any indication just bet getter and better.
Rating: Summary: Thank you Christopher! Review: My 10 year old nephew, Christopher, recommended this book to me one day while we were walking through our local book store. Because he was so enthusiastic about the book, I thought I'd buy it and give it a try. Well, Christopher should be writing this review as his recommendation was right on target. Great characters with an imaginative plot. As noted by others, this book is not to be confused with the Harry Potter series. It's a completely different storyline, but definitely worth picking up, enjoying and passing on.
