Summary: Lion's game
Review: This book was very good, but it was not quite flawless. As a couple other people have commented, the middle pages do tend to drag a little bit; also, I didn't find the ending especially satisfying, but Demille's books always have strange endings, so I can't be too surprised. Overall, however, this was classic DeMille--I thought that it was funnier than Plum Island, and (at least in stretches) almost as funny as Gold Coast. For the record, I would rank DeMille's books: 1. Gold Coast (the best modern novel I have ever read) 2. Charm School 3. Lion's Game 4. Word of Honor 5. General's daughter 6. Cathedral 7. Spencerville (what happened?). #2 - #6 were all very good, just no Gold Coast, and #7 was the only blacksheep.

Summary: Quit smoking with the Lion's Game
Review: Needed something to totally occupy me the last week while I quit smoking. This book was the ticket. Couldn't put it down until I was finished. Great suspense and humor. DeMille is one of my favorite authors. I was let down with the ending though. I thought it kind of fizzeled.

Summary: great but that last page............
Review: I am a huge DeMille fan and waited with baited breath for this book to arrive. I wasn't disappointed through 647 pages.......it's only the last page that through me for a loop. That's it? I feel that a book this smart, this witty, with such interesting, intriguing characters and fast paced, well researched plot should have come to a far better conclusion than it did. It was a great read but I felt cheated.

Review: THIS IS AS GOOD AS "THE GOLD COAST" AND IT DON'T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THAT. NELSON DEMILLE IS THE BEST!

Summary: A reader from California
Review: What a wonderful read. I love the John Corey character - you feel like you want to get to know him personally. Very witty dialogue. Great development of characters and story line. Can't wait for the next DeMille book.

Summary: Probably DeMille's Best
Review: This is probably Nelson DeMille's best book so far (my favorite, at least). It was great to "see" John Corey back -- his wit and hilarious sarcasm are none the worse for the wear after his adventures in Plum Island. And Corey may have finally met his match in a lady friend. WARNING: When you start this book, you might want to be sure you have some time to set aside. It's a very compelling read that will you hook you hard right from the beginning.

Summary: Winning Game!
Review: Ever since Plum Island I have been awaiting another book with John Corey. It seems like a long time, but then again, at 673 pages, it probably took Demille some time to write it. I am happy to say that the wait was worth it, however. Unlike some other big name authors who have been writing quickly but producing sub par work (ie. Cornwell, Baldacci, etc.), Demille has turned up another winner. The writing is fantastic; Great characters and dialogue, and an excellent fast-paced story. I also love the use of humor in the book. Corey is hillarious with all of his smart-ass sarcastic remarks. The humor is refreshing, as so many books take themselves too seriously, and end up becoming somewhat dull. The Lions Game is anything but dull though. It is an exciting, engrossing, nasty, intelligent book that can be summed up nicely by the cliche "I couldn't put it down" Read it, or you will regret it.

Summary: I'm a huge DeMille fan and was disappointed
Review: DeMille is my favorite author.

As an overview, I think the first 200 pages of Lion's Game are awesome, the middle 400 drag, and the last 70 or so perk up a little, but by the time they came around I just couldn't recapture my enthusiasm. The book lacked the freshness and energy of Plum Island, which had a different feel to it than any book I had ever read, made me laugh out loud repeatedly, continually introduced (and eliminated) vibrant new characters, and had a believable and entertaining chemistry (or "anti-chemistry") between John Corey and Beth Penrose.

This time around, I thought both Corey's jokes and relationships were a little forced, and his primary love relationship utterly lacking in chemistry. After the first 200 pages the next 400 became completely obvious, and if The Lion took another plane I thought I was going to scream. Also, I don't think I learned anything new about this seemingly complex villain after he was first introduced. He just kept doing the same thing over, and over, and over, and over again (until what I believe is an ending that tries for a home run but instead is caught well before the fence (bad baseball analogy).

I've been trying to figure out what went wrong, and I've come up with two theories--1) the book was rushed out to capatalize on Plum Island (and the character lost his freshness this time around) and 2) it almost seemed like for the first time in his work DeMille was a bit full of himself, as opposed to his characters (repeated references to prior works, potshots at real life critics of his movies, etc.).

This is not to say that I won't buy his next book on the day it comes out-- DeMille remains my favorite author. I think the harshness of this review stems in part from my increased expectations and standards for his work, which didn't quite satisfy this time.

Summary: You've done it again, DeMille
Review: I really enjoyed the sarcastic humor of the main character, John Corey, who I loved in Plum Island. I've read all of DeMille's books and The Lion's Game is right up there with his other great works. Look out for references to the Charm School, The General's Daughter and even some good-natured knocks at Danielle Steel.
