Rating: Summary: Finally, someone not afraid to tell the truth Review: How much you enjoy this book will depend entirely upon how aware you already are of the sad state of our nation. To the degree that you hold illusions that our system is anything but broken, thoroughly corrupt, benefiting the few at the expense of the many, you will find this book an uncomfortable read. On the other hand, those of us who have known at least some of this all along do tend to find his perspective, as well as his humor about it all refreshing. He connects the dots, using his outrageous "Theatre of the Absurd" humor, to frame the disturbing picture he paints. It isn't pretty, but the more one is willing to look, the more complete the picture. Enron, the corporate state, religious rule, inequality, oppression, the rape of the environment, these have all consumed our nation like an army of locusts, and we had better get busy if we think we're going to change any of this within the next four years. The task is daunting, but Michael Moore at least does the job of showing us how far we've slipped, and makes suggestions as to how we might be able to save ourselves after all. If you get what I did out of the book, it should make you angry precisely in such a way that will motivate you to take action. Even if that action is merely to vote in the next election, then the book will have achieved its purpose. This nation is far to great to allow it to be stolen by any one group.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: Book seems hashed together and not as funny or cutting-edge as Moore's other work. It reads as if Moore got angry one day at the state of affairs in American politics and put his thoughts down in an undisciplined fashion- childish insults, exaggerations, and all. If you want political comedy, I suggest PJ O'Rourke. If you want interesting political insight, try Nader's "Crashing the Party".
Rating: Summary: Good book, would have been better if released last October Review: I just finished this funny book yesterday. He does a good job of combining working class values, tongue-in-cheek humor, and an examination of the corporate and Bush administration hypocracies. His facts are well documented in the back of the book. Which is fortunate because he makes a lot of statements which you want to believe couldn't possibly be true until you check the sources. As for the title (apparently it is all some reviewers read), take it for the social satire it is. One of the ideas that Michael talks about is the way white people hide racist attitudes behind politically correct speach. Of course no one has titled a book "Stupid Black People" they titled it "The Bell Curve". Even if you disagree with Moore's political stance you will still enjoy his humour and he will give you food for thought. The nearest comparision I can make is how a liberal like me enjoyed P.J. O'Rourke's "All the Trouble in the World" The main drawback to this book is that it doesn't go past August 2001. Now I know that is when he finished the book and that there was concern that post 9/11 it would get published but I still feel he could have added a chapter about his thoughts post 9/11 while waiting for the book to be released. It is wild that he knew about Enron, Arthur Anderson, and Halburton months before CNN or Fox News.
Rating: Summary: The emperor has no clothes Review: Stellar book. Just stellar. I read it in just a couple of sittings and howled with laughter all the way through it... What upsets some people so much is that a book decrying the Bush fantasyland of the past year has reached the top ... Moore stands up for openness. The Bush administration stands up for secrecy and stealth. They make the Nixon administration look like an open book by comparison. As for the one star reviews? Dismiss them. You know they haven't bought the book for the simple reason that they wouldn't want to put money into Moore's pocket Bravo, Mr. Moore. As Moore predicts, the tide is turning on young Bush already. The slow slide into historical oblivion for this president has already begun It's going to be fun to watch.
Rating: Summary: Mark Twain Lives Review: Anger, humor and muckraking is a combination that can't miss in this world of corporate media's pablum. Michael Moore brings us all three in his new book Supid White Men and other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation. No doubt, some political junkies will read this and be outraged. That is the point of the book. It is written to outrage and Moore has certainly given outrage as much grist as it needs. Our expanding knowedge of the Enron fraud as well as emerging information of massive corporate fruad beyond Enron gives Moore's theses greater and greater validity as each day passes. Since he wrote this before Enron was a household word, his expose of the political and corportate love affair at the highest levels makes this essential reading. We have not had a political humorist in this mold since Mark Twain and Moore will certainly take his place along side the man who has been known as America's greatest writers. He uses sarcasm and irony with the same sting and the same true American voice that made Clemens the much loved figure he was. In years to come this book will become a collectors item.
Rating: Summary: It's about time a book of substance hit #1 on the charts!! Review: I'm absolutely thrilled to see Michael Moore sitting at the top of the best selling book charts. He is one of the few remaining activists in our culture who still truly speaks his mind. Once again, he has written an excellent book that puts a massive magnifying glass on those in our society who feel they can manipulate the rest of the world and get away with it. This is the ultimate book for the Enron era. The "stupid white men" who have run this world for far too long. It's time for an intellectual revolution. America has been held down and dumbed down for far too long. Seeing his book skyrocketing up the charts is proof that there are many people who are sick of the way business and government are run in the U.S., and many who want to see positive changes. Anyone who has seen Michael's "Awful Truth" show, knows that he has made it his life's commitment to try to spark positive change. And, he's incredibly effective. ... He gets deep under the skin of people and shakes their passive world. "Stupid White Men" is a wonderful breath of fresh air in the stale world of plastic entertainment.
Rating: Summary: The Truth Review: True, a lot of people may think this book is unpatriotic, however this book reveals the truth: There is a lot of greed going on in America today and many politicians are using 911 as a way to cover their intentions: corporate welfare for big corporations. Come on people! See the truth! Of course I feel that Mikey Moore could offer more practicle solutions to the problems of today.
Rating: Summary: America held hostage by Stupid White Men! Review: Michael Moore has hit one out of the park with Stupid White Men. Hilarious and scary... is this America? I had a hard time believing what I was reading but the references are all in the back of the book. Turns out that the truth is stranger than what they tell us on the nightly news. A must-read for all Americans. Moore is a true American patriot and gives us hope that the people can and will make a change in our country.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Commentary on One of America's Biggest Problems Review: In this era of illegal political appoinments and a defunct justice system (re the 2000 presidential coup), we need voices who can point out why America has fallen to such a cultural and intellectual low as to permit this brand of fascism to suplant the founding fathers' democracy. Michael Moore's book explains a great deal about the "dumbing down" of America, and about the fire of anger being intentionally stirred up by a fascist political party (the Republicans) who are bent on ruling this land by a Fourth Reich.
Rating: Summary: Very funny and informative Review: If you enjoy political humor and you have never read Michael Moore, this books for you! The best words to describe "Stupid White Men" are: Enlightening. Honest. Intelligent. You will read all about the corruption with the two party system. Soft money and the influence corporations have with Presidents, Senators, and Congressmen. How corporate America downsizes (lays-off) Americans and moves there plants to third world contries, even when there making record profits. The frightening truth about Global Warming and Pollution. Deforestation. Information the Republican Party does not want you to know. I can go on and on. Like the websites Citizen.org and Commoncause.org, Mr. Moore is an honest journalist, and I suggest you read his book.
