Rating: Summary: Is this man The Last American Patriot? You decide. Review: It's been said that "The pen is mightier than the sword," but Michael Moore's latest book, STUPID WHITE MEN, is anything but a sword - it's a combination of stun grenade and cluster bomb, tossed right into the heart of the beast that is George Bush's America. The man behind the critcally acclaimed movies ROGER & ME and THE BIG ONE gives you a view of the 2000 Presidential election and Bush's inauguration that you won't see on American television, providing a detailed account of how various key Republicans tried to fix the election long before the Supreme Court handed the Presidency to Bush. Moore, however, is not content to rest with Bush; he also takes aim at America's growing unemployment rate, racial prejudice, child care, the environment, corporate greed in the era of the 10,000-point Dow, and the fact that starting salaries for airline pilots are eclipsed by the earnings of fast food workers - and that's only one-third of the book. Green Party members will eat this book up, although renegades from both the Democrats and the Republicans will get a charge out of it as well. If this book has a major flaw, it is the fact that Moore doesn't give references in the text for many of his assertions, but perhaps he's challenging the readers to research his claims for themselves to see if they can prove him wrong. Considering Moore's track record, it'll be a difficult task. STUPID WHITE MEN is a book that is designed to make you think hard about yourself and about America, a book that openly defies White House spokesman Ari Fleischner's admonition to "watch what we say." And it's finding a lot of readers; despite the fact that virtually every American media outlet has blacklisted STUPID WHITE MEN, it has occupied the #1 spot on the New York Times' Bestseller List for about four weeks now. Maybe it's time for you to find out why.
Rating: Summary: This book raises questions that need to be asked. Review: What is so excellent about this book is the reception it has gotten from the mainstream media. Nothing. The fact that the bestelling book in the US, Canada, Britain, and Ireland can't get an ineterview with any mainstream news or entertianment programs shows that there are some very important questions being asked by the book. Whether the news media is so controlled by the government and corporate America that they will not talk about this book or jorunalists are just ashamed that a documentary film maker has had to do all of their work for them since they have curled up and quit performing their jobs since Bush took office is unclear. Regardless, this book has scared and angered many people. It is exciting that one book can do this. Take a look at this book. You may not agree with all of it, but chances are, whether you are a Democrat, Green, Reform, or Libertarian party member you will find much to enjoy in here. It is absolutely worth a read!
Rating: Summary: The illiterate emperor has no clothes Review: If you were appalled by the take-over of the election by the EXTREME COURT, if you believe the Bush team has [sold] itself for ENRON, if you are disgusted with the 'policy' of the PRETZEL-DENT then this is the book for you! Very well written...this books attempts to show how we got to where we are today: if this were a rant by yet another conservative white guy, it probably be forgotten already. Oddly, with 90% of the 'liberal media' reporting sky high poll numbers for Bush, this book continues to sell very well (it hasn't really been reviewed outside of these pages, either). Something doesn't add up...... UNITED WE STAND (correction) 5-4 WE STAND!
Rating: Summary: This book helps make sense of it all. Review: "Stupid White Men" is yet another great book from Moore. Growing up in Toledo gave me the opportunity to experience many of same things that Moore experienced growing up in Flint. I was confused why everyone seemed to be losing their jobs. I was confused why my school was falling apart. I was confused why crime, drug abuse, divorce, and all these other really awful things were starting to happen, large scale, in my community. I voted, in my first election, for Reagan believing his trickle down economics theory and, like Reagan, believed that unions were the root of all evil. About tweleve years later things had not gotten any better and, in my opinion, had actually gotten worse. My belief in our government was failing and I didn't know where to turn. That's when I came across Moore's movie "Roger & Me". Suddenly everything became frighteningly clear. Since that day I have watched or read everything Moore has done and "Stupid White Men" is another feather in a cap full of feathers. To stay balanced I read conservate material as well, but time and again, Moore's material always rings the truest. "Stupid White Men" is one of those books that rings true. He dares to go where our media should go. He is unafraid to call a duck a duck. His straight forward, in their face writing leaves little room for anyone, including our current President, to spin their way out. Is it any wonder that, despite being on all the major best selling lists for weeks, that Moore and his ideas have not been discussed in the major (corporate controlled) media? Are the "big boys" scared of Moore and his ideas? Read it and be your own judge. If you are one of the 1% in this country who control 30% of the wealth, or one of the 9% that control another 37% then this book probably isn't for you. That is unless you've suddenly become interested in the health of the country as a hole. If you're one of the remaining 90% of this country who are scraping up the remaining 33% of the wealth and wonder why you feel like you're losing ground this book might help you make some sense of it. If you're a involved with the government "Stupid White Men" is a must read. The majority of the citizens of this country are getting tired. John Adams said "The American Revolution started long before the first shot was fired." Just something to think about.
Rating: Summary: Bitterness in Hardcover Review: Every time I set this book down, I felt like I was in pain. Not because of what Moore was saying but because of how he said it. Moore is a very angry man, and every sentence was dripping with bitterness. Moore is obviously very liberal. Liberals will probably like this book. Conservatives will likely seek to hunt him down because of it. He might consider that a good thing. Each chapter is another tirade about the evils of George W. Bush, rich men, white men, stupid men, men as an entire gender, America in general, and finally the democrats (yeah, he's mad at them too). I'll take just a moment to point out that he throws out statistics pretty liberally, but those statistics are often skewed because they're not placed in the proper context. For example, he points out that the US is #1 in recorded rapes. Maybe true, but he doesn't consider the facts that we have the third largest population of any country in the world, and many countries have thousands of rapes that occur every year that are never recorded because society tends to look the other way. Moore's facts are often weighty, but often misleading. Don't mistake me! I'm sick of greedy, unscrupulous, corrupt, and stupid men, too, but I'm not just bitter about it, and I think that's where this book falls apart for me. If he were rational and thoughtful, it would have been an enjoyable read even if I did disagree with 60 to 70% of it. But it's hard to enjoy something that makes you angry simply because he's angry.
Rating: Summary: I am not alone Review: I remember reading Downsize This! a few years ago and thought Michael Moore was good enough to read again. This book is even funnier. Whats more is that he picks apart things we might have suspected about our government and backs them up with stats. It should be a must read for everyone, even Young Republicans.
Rating: Summary: It's just satire and not political insight Review: I like Michael Moore. But remember that while Roger and Me was funny, it was also 10 years too late. Same stuff in Stupid White Men. All sorts of cutting satire and quite a few good lines. However, most of this book is so passe. As with all things, timing is everything. This book would have been a lot funnier one year ago. But since the mass murder of Sept 11, Stupid White Men reads like some adolescent whining by a kid who refuses to grow up. As a result, much of Michael Moore's sharpest barbs come off as petty and shallow. Most thinking people I know have shared this opinion. I'm always amused by multi-millionares trying to pass themselves off as blue collar heroes. He markets himself well. In the end though, Michael Moore is just a guy hustling a buck for Michael Moore. Like Roger and Me, Stupid White Men has passed its expiration date for freshness.
Rating: Summary: Stupid White Men Review: I am in the minority of people who think this book is perhaps one of the worst I've ever read. I am just glad that I didn't buy it, but borrowed someone else's copy. I honestly do not know how so many people would like this book. I do not appreciate this man's comments about the South. It just shows that he is very ignorant on the South. I hate narrow-minded people and this author is one of the most narrow-minded writers I've ever encountered.
Rating: Summary: Beware! Review: At first it seems like this book makes every anti-capitalist and anti-white statement the author could think of. The book seems at first to be anti-government to the extent that government is influenced by business and white people. Overall the book portrays itself as pro-government because the book repeatedly implies that only government has the power to take the ill gotten gains of white people and capitalists and give it to those they have exploited. This book is so outrageous that it is hard to take any of it seriously. Consider that each chapter blows the lid off of yet another evil mega-conspiracy. For example: Evil Mega-Conspiracy #1: Coke persuaded a school to let kids drink Coke in class. Evil Mega-Conspiracy #2: Everything was PERFECT in America until George Bush stole the election, and then everything was INSTANTLY [bad]. Evil Mega-Conspiracy #3: The TV news primarily shows black people committing violent crimes, but not a single black person has ever done the author the slightest harm. Whereas, every boss that fired him was white, every girlfriend that dumed him was white, every landlord that evicted him was white, etc. A minor but memorable point in the book was that a kid is twice as likely to be killed by lightning as by a gun at school.
Rating: Summary: Free Speech In Action Review: What a tribute to the first amendment! Moore's pungent cynicism is tempered by the realization that only in America could this book be written, distributed and read. He has a terrific sense of sarcastic irony. Despite its sinister portrayals it is generally fun to read. Although the book lacks depth and cites little in the way of source authority, it will keep your head shaking.
