Rating: Summary: I am a big Michael Moore fan! Review: I thought this book was well written and every time I put it down I was angry and sad for the state of our nation...BUT don't let the right wingers fool you. Michael is against the democrats who act like rebuplicans too. He spends a whole chapter complaining about BILL CLINTON! So don't let them fool you that this is just liberal left wing propaganda.Michael wants jobs for the american people, wants the environment to be protected and wants the left wing to fight against the right more. What is wrong with that? I will say that I found his previous books to be more humourous. I would recommend DOWNSIZE THIS & TV NATION over this book. This one is more angry and less tongue in cheek. I really love his documentaries! If you have not seen THE BIG ONE or ROGER & ME rent them now! They are great.
Rating: Summary: What else can I say? Review: This man writes like Dave Barry on amphetamines, and illuminates the backside of American politics with hallucinatory clarity and many bad words. He is our Tom Paine of the 45th Parallel and 21st Century. One thing for sure---"Stupid White Men" made me glad I voted Libertarian in the last presidential election. (Sorry Michael, but voting Democrat in a Detroit precinct is like transporting holy water to Lourdes.) Moore starts out by savaging the Republicans, most especially those from Texas. But Democrats, beware! He takes you on in the following chapters. If anything, he's harder on the Democrats because he is so disappointed in them. • Most tasteless bit of journalism---Nancy Reagan's letter to Congress concerning stem cell research, supposedly written at her husband's death-bed • Most startling revelation---the relationship between Enron (and other Big Oil companies) and the current occupants of the White House---Well, it was a revelation to me. Just think, the author wrote this book when Enron was still the darling of Wall Street • Next-to-the-most startling revelation---Al Gore is more conservative than most of the Texan Bushes. Boy, does Michael ever go ballistic on the subject of Gore. Al, don't even think about running in 2004, even though you really won in 2000 • The scandal that made this author really mad---many Florida voters (i.e. Black Democrats) were excluded from the 2000 election well in advance of November. How was it done? False felony charges emanating from---you guessed it---Texas If every voter in America reads "Stupid White Men," even George W. is going to vote for Ralph Nader in 2004.
Rating: Summary: Intelligent vicious wit of the highest calibre Review: I have never laughed (or cried so much) over a book in all my life. Michael Moore knows how to punch people's buttons to get a reaction. However he also knows how to be brutally honest and totally up front about his own race. Never has one man done so much for so few or words to that effect! The title is totally offensive and I know human nature enough that it will get some people's ire up even before they open the front cover but come on chaps, I know you're all sniggering into your hands really because let's be honest, it is bloody funny! Some of the things Michael says are SOOOOOOO true. I mean come on, we go on about the violence of rap and the Black American Culture but then someone produces the Dixie Chicks and "Goodbye Earl" and everyone thinks its funny! Double standards or what! Michael Moore is just pointing out that in this world no one can lay claim to being all good, all pure, and all wonderful. His book is an absolute gem, and if you're offended then don't buy it. However I know you will because let's be honest, we're all dying to know what he has to say even if we never admit it! In the UK some years ago we had a weekly show called Spitting Image and no one but the bravest would ever admit to being a fan of this outrageous series but millions watched it and millions loved it, and I think Michael Moore's book will be no different. So go out and buy it but remember, you've been warned!
Rating: Summary: Stupid White Men-Strident and Funny Review: ... Michael Moore likes to be a thorn in America's side. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Every society needs a dose of someone like Moore. "Obnoxious," "cocky" and "unpatriotic" are just a few of the words that have been thrust upon this film director and writer. And if some leaders had their way, Moore might be brought up on charges of treason for his critical remarks about the conservative agenda and the Bush administration. But we need Moore. We need a rabble-rouser who encourages national discourse. Moore fulfills that role with his latest offering, "Stupid White Men ... and Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation!" Pet peeves Just as the United States reels with what some hear as jingoism, leave it to this cynical Midwesterner to supply the country with his carefully calculated thoughts on poverty, crime, illiteracy, election abuse and President Bush's positive image. Moore tackles these issues with sharp political intellect, dry humor and self-deprecation without sounding like a tired old liberal. In other words, he avoids coming off as an arrogant blowhard the way his ideological nemesis, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, did in his 1992 dissent "The Way Things Ought to Be." But like Limbaugh, Moore may reveal some sour grapes on particular issues. One issue that comes to the fore throughout the book is the 2000 presidential election. While much of the country has moved on from what Moore describes as a "stolen election," he still laments yesterday's news. It would be nice to see such anger channeled into some solutions to the various societal problems that Moore raises throughout the book. Moore does offer solutions, but in a comical, peevish way. In his "Idiot Nation" chapter, Moore complains about what he sees to be the country's poor education system. He pokes fun at Bush by including a "Presidential Clip and Carry," a two-page cutout of a list of the leaders of the 50 largest countries. Connecting with the reader Moore's beefs hardly end with politics. He delivers a round of male-bashing in his "The End of Men" section -- in which he urges men to learn how a toilet seat works and encourages them to bathe daily. Moore asserts that men should step aside from leadership roles and let women deal with the stress. His words are fun, concise -- and, no doubt in the eyes of many beholders, true. Moore has his own theories on why things are as they are. Deploying something like the "Six Degrees of Separation" theory, Moore insists that all society's ills are linked back to -- you guessed it -- stupid white men. Moore argues that it's greedy CEOs, politicians and those who support them who are responsible for what he sees to be American social decay. Perhaps he plays the blame game a bit too much, but Moore's thesis is both resonant and humorous. Like some other political entertainer-comics -- Dennis Miller, Al Franken -- Moore doesn't pretend to be a pundit. As a result, he connects with the reader. "Stupid White Men" may offend many people, but that's what makes Moore an original. He is not afraid to publish dissent when it's unpopular to do so. And there's nothing more patriotic and American than that...
Rating: Summary: Read this book!!!!! WOW!! Review: Wow! This book is amazing. It really opened my eyes to the state of the world today. Michael Moore writes on many different topics all related to the "State of the Nation" . It is amazing how he takes on such serious topics and uses his great sense of humor to lighten up the book. Moore is fighting to provide a better life for all people. He questions the motives of the rich and powerful, and finds the root cause of world poverty and war. He explains how serious the pollution of the Earth's air, land, and water is, and how the Global Warming issue needs to be addressed right now. He gives a great solution on how to end all war. This book challenges us all to stand up, become active, and to create a world that works for all people. He shows readers how the Republican and Democratic parties are basically the same, and shows the reader why third parties, such as the Green Party, have never had a chance to win. He questions why there has never been a woman U.S. President, and he gives us a list of his choices for the next President. The top of the list is "President Cynthia McKinney (The best person in Congress today) " Page 151. I agree, she is the best! Moore has a similiar message as other great authors I love: Ralph Nader, Mike Ruppert, Winona LaDuke, Daniel Quinn, Derrick Jensen, Tom Robbins, and my favorite: OSHO Moore teaches us how to honor the Earth, and how it is necessary that we respect the lives of people all over the world. All the statistics and quotes used in the book are true, and they are backed up with all the sources. These statistics will shock you. Moore is standing up for all the people of the world, the workers, the poor, the minorities, the unemployed, and the oppressed. He is a voice for those who are not heard. He has an important message that everyone needs to hear. Thank you Michael! We love you!!!
Rating: Summary: A definite Must-Read for anyone! Review: Michael Moore's accomplishments in this book are phenomenal to say the least. I would say that is the duty of anyone interested in the path America is taking to read this book. Simply put if this work of art doesn't get you incensed at the state of the nation nothing will. Whether it is the disenfranchisment of thousands of black voters, or the current state of education, Moore quickly identifies the problems and even better gives you the means to start changing things for the better. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: About time! Review: Mike-Thank you so much for writing that book. Here I was thinking we were the only ones who didn't see the man (ahem, men, heh heh) behind the curtain, that maybe that my husband and I and a handful of bewildered friends were the only sane Americans left watching in horror as the entire nation seemed to be gleefully dancing on the edge of a great precipice...okay, enough awful prose, but seriously, it is so damned relieving to see an unapologetically Liberal (when did the political preference of the majority become a dirty word?) rant hit the bestseller list- and I'm really hoping it will encourage some folks to get off their lazy butts and do something about these clowns. ... Thanks and good luck, and when do we get to see you on TV again?
Rating: Summary: Light at the end of the tunnel Review: Abraham Licoln once said that: "you can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time." Michael Moore's Stupid White Men is a case in point. It is the greatest expose since Philip Wiley's Generation of Vipers. The fact that his book was on the New York Times bestseller list for four straight weeks shows that many Americans are waking up for the trauma of September 11th and realizing just how badly they've been hoodwinked. Moore has the intestinal fortitude that this country is in grave need of. Vance Packard wrote a book some forty years ago entitled "Nation of Sheep". That's essentially the underlying theme of Moore's book. We no longer have the guts to fight for our freedom or even care about it. A majority of us don't even bother to vote...It should be required reading in the public schools. The youth should know how a handful of old men and a...president are usurping us of our basic rights. Our Bill of Rights. Our natural resources. Our jobs, medicare, and social security. We had better listen to Michael Moore before its too late. Time is running out and its running out fast.
Rating: Summary: Hillarious, and sadly/poignantly accurate Review: Bitterly sarcastic, stinging, and absolutely true. Read it and weep. It strikes me almost as funny... There's not really much in it that's new per se; it's just all in one place, and, finally, being read by "the mainstream". Bravo to Michael Moore for speaking the truth, and raspberrys to the many, many people who tried to kill it before it even got published. The truth may be ugly sometimes, but it's necessary to a free people.
Rating: Summary: As funny as it is important Review: History will remember Michael Moore as one of the great political satirists of his age. In this amusing and highly intelligent book, Moore provides a detailed examination and a thorough roasting of the dirty little secrets about American politics and culture that most of us have known about for years but have preferred to ignore. The largest and most obvious of these truths is that, contrary to current mythology, white men have historically proven to be the most violent and destructive people on the planet. Moore's targets also include the penal system, the judicial system, SUV owners, the Clinton/Gore record and the fact that the current American president holds office because his people illegally rigged an election. People may not like what Moore has to say, but few can argue that he is impartial. Using meticulously researched facts and media items, Moore reveals that Bill Clinton was one of the most "Republican" presidents America ever had, that America's two political parties are essentially financed and controlled by the same corporate entities, and that George W. Bush's terrible environmental record is actually an extension of Bill Clinton's terrible environmental record. Moore frequently discusses the powerful hold that Enron and its former CEO, Kenneth Lay have on George W. Bush, which is remarkable since this book was written BEFORE the fall of Enron. He also provides irrefutable evidence that the Bush family and its political allies deliberately rigged the 2000 presidential race in Florida to ensure Dubya's victory. One of the most refreshing things about this book is that it is more than just a damning indictment of all things wrong with America. Moore continuously points out that we CAN do something about these problems and shows us how. He points out how easy it is to run for office at the local level (he did it and won when he was sixteen), to contact members of the house and senate, and to break away from traditional voting patterns. I was dismayed to learn that publishers and book stores are shying away from this book because George W. Bush just happened to be president during a major terrorist incident in September, 2001. But I picked up hope a few weeks ago when an elderly Chinese man asked me if I had heard of this book and then told me that he had just read about it in a Chinese newspaper. Apparently, the world wants to hear what Michael Moore has to say, and restricting the publication or sale of his book will not prevent that.
