Rating: Summary: Learn about the crazy people leading our ocountry Review: The economy is falling into the hands of crazy politicians! Our lives are in the hands of a liar and a theif! Do you really know what happens behind the scenes during an election or in everyday life in the White House? Well, I didn't. This book opened my eyes to a world of political scandals. I learned all about the people that lead our country. This book made me laugh hysterically and at the same time it made me frightened. I learned a lot about George W. Bush and all the crazy scandals that happened to get him in office. He had a whole team of politicians working behind him to make sure their was no way Al Gore would get more votes than him. Michael Moore is a very entertaining author and this book is a great read!
Rating: Summary: Stupid White (right?) Men Review: I read here where someone refers to Michael Moore as a "Leftist Rush Limbaugh". There is one crucial difference however-- Michael Moore writes NON-fiction. As he knows, his audience is smart enough to follow up his research to make sure he got the facts straight before blindly spouting the party line. This is an easy read, even for someone who is "conservatively-challenged" (sorry, but they've been calling me names for far too long). If you feel like you've been standing in a fog of grimy misinformation and right-wing manure for the past decade, then this book is like a refreshing shower. It's fantastic (and somewhat incredible) to see it sitting atop the NY Times and Amazon.com bestseller lists after all of the propaganda we've had shoved down our throats for the past decade ("liberal media", my eye). You may not agree with everything Mike says (I don't), but at least he says it (unlike the conspicuously quiet democrats in congress). Do yourself a favor and become a real patriot--take the flag off of your car antennae, turn off the FOX "news" channel, and BUY THIS BOOK! If you are suspicious that Mike didn't get the facts straight, do a little research and see how this book almost didn't get published (the January 7,2002 edition of Salon.com has an excellent article). Sadly, it just helps to prove his arguments (oh, and a bucket-load of examples and statistics don't hurt either). If you think you still live in a democracy and don't want to know what's really going on in America then I would encourage you to keep the blinders on and ignore this book (along with another great read, David Brock's "Blinded by the Right"). However, the rest of us "Liberals" (when did a word that refers to liberty become synonymous with "traitor"?) should exercise our civic duty and start kicking these "Stupid White Men" out of office beginning this election cycle--then they'll know who their real boss is.
Rating: Summary: Every voter in America should read this book Review: Michael Moore does more than voice his opinion, he gives you facts and resources as to why and how our country is being run by [someone that is not that smart], or at least it appears to be run by an [someone that is not that smart], when Dick Cheney is really calling the shots, because dubya is too damn stupid. His whit and sarcasm, however, sometimes gets confused for fact, and vice versa. There were times when I thought, is he exaggerating to be funny or is this really true? There was also a sophmoric humour, which I didn't always relate to, but my 18 year old son does, which, therefore, justifies it, since he's reaching our younger generation, who are old enough to vote and deserve to be informed. I think every American voter should read this book. I agree with his sentiment, wholeheartedly, 100%! Makes me ashamed that I didn't vote for Nadar. In all fairness, he lets us know what the opposition did wrong too, how and why Clinton got away with what he did. I think America should know the truth, and how corrupt our own country really is on a political level, and how we, as voters are responsible. These guys are getting away with murder, literally. Vulgar at times, but honest. Is this the result of being raised in Flint, Michigan, or his way of getting our attention, or just his way? Demeanor aside, this book should be read by one and all....open your eyes America, smell the pollution.
Rating: Summary: Adolescent ranting Review: This book is a very [bad] attempt to rationalize viewpoints composed entirely of sniveling, whining, tantrums. Nothing in it ever comes close to approaching reality. I would expect a book of this intellectual caliber from a eight year old... not an accountable adult. Very disappointing.
Rating: Summary: Just get by chapter 1 Review: In Michael Moore's newest book, "Stupid White Men..." he makes some excellent points about the current state of the American society, as long as you can hang in there through the first chapter. In Moore's first chapter he complains incessantly about how "George Bush stole the election." For someone who is so good at developing solutions to problems, I expected a little Moore intelligence in his beginning arguments. He seemed to have left out some clear facts about the presidential election, that would have provided a more balanced viewpoint. Once Moore makes it past his tirade, he becomes the writer/thinker that I respect and admire. His views on American society are poignant and thoroughly investigated. It is a good book, but could do without the whinning.
Rating: Summary: all star Review: the importance of this book, alone, merits its five stars...moore uncovers so many scandles.
Rating: Summary: Humorous Critique Review: This book is stuffed with significant facts and viewpoints which are omitted and/or distorted in mass media. Unfortunately, Mr Moore's hyperbolic style sometimes devalues his concrete arguments. Nonetheless, enjoyable, worthwhile reading.
Rating: Summary: Michael Moore has done his homework! Review: And the results...are disturbing. Moore exposes the flaws of the Bush administration, the American voting system, and the law itself. But it isn't written with a Democratic or anti-Republicant slant - he criticises some of the actions of the Democrats as well. Moore's style of writing is so simple that anyone can read, comphrehend and enjoy this book. Moore uses sarcasm to great effect. For example, in one chapter he seems to feel sorry for Bush, and attacks the people who say that Bush does no work. He then proceeds to list the things that Bush has done in his first 4 months as president - and they are usually very deplorable things - like cutting funding to libraries. Someone has to try to keep those bastards running America honest, and it's Michael Moore in this case. This is a book everyone should have!
Rating: Summary: A sorry excuse for a book Review: Although entertaining, Michael Moore choose to squander an opportunity to lucidly describe the cynical way the forces of the shrub manipulated the system to get elected and the sorry state of ethics among the privileged segment of our society. Unfortunately, he diluted the impact of his writing by failing to distinguish between reports in the press and facts. As a trained medical scientist, that reads peer reviewed scientific literature in many disciplines, I am distressed by how often he gets it wrong by relying on reports of reports about matters that are scientific in nature. When there are so many errors in areas that I am qualified to judge, how can I believe the rest of what Moore writes?
Rating: Summary: Pick any side -- you'll wish you hadn't! Review: I knew before picking up STUPID WHITE MEN that Moore was anti-W. I thought there would be a lot of laughs here, mixed with a lot of statistics. I was right. I laughed out loud at his humor and was outraged at the 2000 election and the Republican criminal activity. And then Moore dropped the other shoe -- the facts on Pres. Clinton and how the Democratic Party has severely let us down, too, largely through incompetence and greed. Besides the election, Moore has taken on corporate greed, racism, schools, the environment, how men can avoid extinction, prisons, and a lot of other seemingly unrelated topics. Fascinating and well documented. Mike's still bitter, but he's working it out in some very interesting ways. This is a really compelling and moving read. And he gives the reader a lot of ideas for volunteerism and for political and community action. If this doesn't spur you to action, nothing will! Bring back one person, one vote!
