Rating: Summary: The Ugly Truth Review: This book is an essential read. And while many may pooh-pooh Moore's take on the state of the nation...for the most part he's right on. I admire his courage in speaking out about things that really matter. It makes me proud to read a book such as this-- knowing that in no other country on earth could a book which is critical of many of our national practices and policies not only be published, but flourish for many weeks on the best seller list. For those who doubt Moore's assertions that our government is bought and paid for, that African Americans are no better off today than they were 100 years ago (and that most whites are clueless to this fact,) or that Bush II stole the white house, pay careful attention to the proof he offers. While I wish he would have provided substantiation for all his claims, anyone familiar with Moore's integrity knows that he does his homework. Anyone reading this book with even a slightly open mind will get angry enough (hopefully) to become an involved citizen. If Moore accomplishes nothing more than this, this book will has been a tremendous success. Thanks again Michael for telling it like it (sadly) is.
Rating: Summary: Excessive pointing of fingers won't catalyze positive change Review: Michael Moore is a man with his heart in the right place, but I feel that his packaging and conveying of the message in this most recent work is designed in such a way that it leaves way too much room for misinterpretation. This is very unfortunate. I personally respect Michael Moore immensely, based on the amazing job that he had done on 'Roger and Me.' But I have to admit that through many of the chapters in 'Stupid White Men,' I couldn't help but cringe. The book is littered with sweeping statements that a less renowned author wouldn't ever have been able to get into print. Moore's quick reaction to point fingers at seemingly everyone who has ever offended him (including white women who broke his heart.. maybe a little too much info bud) comes off as juvenile. To end a chapter off with suggestions for high school kids on how to undermine their teachers... How old are you again Mike? Do you have kids of your own? Or to ostracize black Americans who happen to be rising to higher and higher levels in their careers?... I mean, you basically called them Uncle Toms.. That they're selling out to whitey. How destructive. Maybe another perspective that you didn't consider is that this new black elite can serve as positive role models for kids struggling to get out of the ghetto. Or to use terms such as 'Kill Whitey?' I mean, unless you write some kind of disclaimer that you are joking, then you are kind of undermining your goals. Do you really think you can bring about positive change if you are freely putting people on the defensive? How can you rationalize or penetrate a mind that feels it has to defend itself from statements like that? Also, I am curious if you were a resident of New York back in the eighties?... and not a Manhattenite. Have you ever lived in the other boroughs? Say Queens, or Brooklyn? Do you personally know urban violence friend? Has anyone ever tried to shoot or stab you because they hated your color? Kill Whitey? In the words of James Hetfield: "moving back instead of forward seems to be absurd." Personally, I believe that our nation is in the market for a new caliber of leaders. I used to consider Michael Moore as a possible candidate.. for something. In this book Mike, you come off like an irate loaded canon who is taking the opportunity to grind his ax.. excessively. Nevertheless, your heart is in the right place, and I agree with your underlying direction and mission. There is a lot of room for improvement in this great nation. I hope that your book can catalyze positive change, as opposed to causing further divisions. On a final note to the reader of this review: if you are looking for another book with its heart in the right place that takes the approach that we have to stop ostracizing each other before we can begin moving forward... check out the title Transcend by Richard Joseph. This title is also on Amazon... This book also addresses problems, as well as poses solutions. Believe me, it's worth checking out. I hope this review finds you well. Peace.
Rating: Summary: Michael Moore for President Review: If you voted for George W Bush in the last election, this is probably a book you want to skip. Republicans in general probably won't find this book entertaining. Very funny book. Michael Moore keeps getting better.
Rating: Summary: This book is horrible Review: Moore is a bad writer, and this book proves it. His theories and ideas border on juvenile, and what he presents as facts are highly questionable. Save your money -
Rating: Summary: One black woman's review Review: While I agree with the majority of Moore's conclusions and admire his candor in discussing what's REALLY going on in this country, he provides too much unsubstantiated evidence and makes too many questionable claims for his conclusions to be credibly supported.Again, I agree with most of his conclusions, and I do believe that much better evidence to support them exists. But Moore is remiss in presenting better evidence, and the result of this negligence actually harms rather than helps his (and America's) cause. For example, he argues that most white people are afraid of black people, but they should really be afraid of other whites, because it is probably the case that more whites have been directly responsible for harming them in life than have blacks. Some of his points are right on (like the question of why whites fear blacks, if the average white person has never been attacked by a black person but probably has been attacked by another white person; or why are blacks always being blamed for crime, when the most disturbing crimes committed like mass murders (Ted Bundy), terrorism (Timothy Mcveigh), and youth crime (that kid who opened fire at his school), are committed by whites). HOWEVER, instead of stopping after he's made a valid point, Moore chooses instead to present other often irrelevant or contradictory claims that actually weaken his original argument and cast doubt on his credibility. The worst part is that this 'bad evidence' is usually just inserted for 'shock value'--things clearly said to be more inflammatory and make him appear more controversial. The real losers in this case are the people he claims to be speaking for, since the shortcomings of his writing give the right-wingers whose minds most need to be changed an excuse to dismiss Moore's opinions. That is unfortunate. Moore further undermines the degree to which his work can be taken seriously by the ridiculous-looking cover he chose for his book. (I will admit, the cover alone almost prevented me from buying it at all) How can anyone unwilling to present himself in a serious manner expect to be taken seriously? Moore rants under the guise of being a citizen who truly loves this country and fears for its health and future, yet would rather spend his time 'bashing' than taking the time to form his arguments better. I would love to see someone take these issues and discuss them in a more mature and well-researched manner. Only then could the floor be opened up for valuable political dialog that ALL sides are willing to engage in!
Rating: Summary: Michael hits the nail again Review: When I saw the title of the book I thought, no way are stores going to support a book with a title like this. A degrading statement about the white male...no way! But,I found it at my local [store] on the bottom shelf next to the bathrooms. I'm glad I took the time to search for it. What a read...and in one evening, too. Michael has it all figured out and he's not afraid to say what he'd found in America's nooks and cranny's. All of white America should read this one. Blacks have been made the scape goats for America's ills for many years with no visible means of financing their diabolical plot to fail America, well, maybe welfare. This book breaks down our political and socio-economic structure to it's barest form. I'd rank this one up there with Andrew Hatcher's "Two Nations". Very to the point and full of viable information. Loved it!
Rating: Summary: This may be most importantbook ever written Review: I absolutely loved every single page. Moore has tapped into my anger and rage at the idiocy I'm expected to swallow from the right. Every word touched a deep frustration inside me. I love the way Moore cuts thourgh all the pooh pooh we get from the media and expresses himself in plain simple English. This book was almost spiritually uplifting for me! I just know it's going to instill a ground swell of outrage that will change this country.
Rating: Summary: Not As Good As Downsize This... Review: Having been a fan of Michael Moore's brand of political satire since first seeing Roger and Me, I had high expectations for his new book. This book has got to be on a par with Canadian Bacon as one of Moore's most insipid moments. Yes, George W. stole the election, but by surrounding himself with proven statesmen, he's acquitted himself far better than Android Al ever could. Unlike Downsize This..., there's plenty of passages in Stupid White Men...and Other Sorry Excuses for the State of the Nation that just seem to ramble on without even a hint of sharp-edged wit or irony. Perhaps Mr. Moore should just consign himself to the fact that George W. is well on his way to a second term, and divert his attention elsewhere.
Rating: Summary: Interesting. but not all facts....... Review: It is good to know that people around the country are reading this book and usually enjoying it. The viewpoints and facts of Moore are by all means anchored in liberalism, but the presentation is wonderful! If you want solid facts, avoid this book. This is not top notch journalism or 60 Minutes material. This book is sometimes sad look at the state of our nation in 2002. Regardless if you fall left or right, this book will at least give you perspective. One important thing to remember is this book will anger the right wing snobs and spark passion in the left wing wackos. Both groups need to understand that there is no liberal or conservative majority in America. If you read this book with that in mind, you will be entertained.
Rating: Summary: Somewhat Confused, but still good Review: I once watched a movie, "Very Bad Things." The problem with the title of this movie is that it could easily be turned into a negative review headline: "Very Bad Things is a Very Bad Movie." You see where this review is going? Michael Moore is a Stupid White Man. Now, far be it from me to lay the blame on Moore himself. I too, am a Stupid White Man for buying this book. .... In reality, the book does have some good things in it. Actually, it has a lot of good things in it. At times, I laugh, because he's being funny with some of his comments. Then he goes overboard and actually tries to suggest that men are trying to kill off women with cigarettes. Now let's be real. In the midst of what seems to be a serious, albeit bad, argument against men, he just starts spouting off figures and "facts" that are roughly as accurate as a 4-year-old's crayon depiction of the New York City skyline. This book typifies the adage that if you give a monkey a brain, he thinks he rules the world. While funny at times, it's just as often overbearing and downright idiotic. Those looking for the Noam Chomsky from this book will be disappointed, because he dives into the ridiculous too often. Those looking for Dave Barry will be disappointed, because he tries to dive into the serious too often. He does neither that that well nor completely. But again, this is a piece of entertainment value. I do laugh at times. And some of the things he says are very pertinent and extremely worthwhile. But the reality is that he could have summed up the serious side of this book in about 50 pages and it would have been an explosive 50 pages at that. But then he goes on to add 220 or so pages to make it wacky and colorful to help sell it to...the Idiot Nation. If he were to take one approach or the other (Chomsky or Barry) I think this book would be worth a lot more than it is. Because he does actually ask some very good questions, he does raise some very good points, and he does make you think. At the same time, he throws in red herring facts all over the place. As Twain said: Lies, damned lies, and statistics. ... ... Anyway, it's kinda tough to mix Noam Chomsky and Dave Barry. In fact, Moore proves that it's impossible.
