Rating: Summary: I was a conservative before Michael Moore... Review: Okay...I admit it...I VOTED FOR REAGAN. Stupid move, I know. Blame the state of the nation on me. But, I discovered guys like Michael Moore who stand for what America is really about--free speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and the idea that in a democracy, every person gets one vote. In this political climate, anyone who disagrees with our Thief in Chief is branded. But how can America get anywhere if people are afraid to stand up for what they believe in? Moore is hard on Republicans for their greed, hypocrisy and immorality, but he is hard on Democrats for the same reasons. I mean, I don't really think it was the zipper on Clinton's pants that kept Gore from winning. I think it was some cheaters in the states of Florida and Texas! Read this book if you want to know what's REALLY going on.
Rating: Summary: Change of heart! Review: This is more of an apology rather than a review. I initially posted a review here that wasn't very favorable of this book but I had admitted I did not read the whole thing. I still stick to my opinions to those first few chapters of the book however after forcing myself to finish it I realized I didn't give it enough of a chance before I reviewed it. The chapter on education changed my attitude entirely for the book and I really came to like it. It still at times becomes very much like one big complaint but the topics he covers later he does so with such a creative mind I loved it. He made me feel the emotions I had back when I was struggling through public school. This book is an excellent eye opener for Americans and even though it gets extreme at times that is fine because the true messages are hidden deeper and are more fun to find out.
Rating: Summary: lol, insightful Review: the title holds the true essence of our nation's problems except that is really not an excuse but a solid reason, hahaha. Black or white you cant deny the fact that white people have ruined every other society in the world. The book was ok but the title would have been more appropriate if not for the use of the word excuse in the title. hail to stupid white boys!
Rating: Summary: Enjoyed it a lot Review: Michael Moore is a great man and I found this book to be very entertaining. His commentary on politics, campaign finance, civil rights and the florida election were outstanding. However, the book would have been better if he ceased to discuss the environment and women's issues. The chapters about men becoming extinct and why we should drink bottled water just didn't make sense to me. Also, his claim that airline pilots start at $16,000 per year just isn't true. I feel that when authors try to be authorities on topics that they are not familiar with, it may tend to discredit the stuff that they are well versed in (in Moore's case, corporate america and politics). On a related note, I highly recommend his upcoming movie, 'Bowling for Colombine'. It is an outstanding documentary on guns and violence in America.
Rating: Summary: Infuriating & disturbing Review: I have not been so infuriated (yet enlightened and entertained) by any book such as this one! The only thing wrong with this book is that I had to keep putting it down to calm my anger. I was reading some passages to a friend. Now we both can't even look/listen to Bush without getting acid reflux. When I saw the title "Stupid White Men", I couldn't help but pick it up and read it. But don't judge a book by its title (white) guys. This is a must read for all Americans interested in knowing the motivations and plans our great "Thief in Chief" has for us. Bend over America!
Rating: Summary: Just so-so Review: I'm a fan of Michael Moore. I like his politics; and though I think his humor sometimes misses the mark, more often than not, he leaves me with something to think about. That said, I don't think that Stupid White Men is his best work. With the exception of the first chapter (dissecting the Bush presidency), there's not much here that he didn't already rant about plenty enough in his first book, or on his website. And some of his rants this time around are a little silly, e.g. calling the whole recycling concept a failure because he once saw someone throw the carefully collected items from the recycling bin into a trash dumpster. I can't fault him for this, but a lot of Stupid White Men feels out-of-date since it was written pre-9/11 but published afterward. Since I bought the hardback edition, I'd look forward to reading a paperback version with some additional "War On Terror" insights. I imagine that would be very valuable. Overall, recommended for big fans of Michael Moore. Others, I'd stick with his first book (Downsize This!), and check out his website.
Rating: Summary: Political Junkie? A must read Review: I live in Palm Beach County, Florida and worked in the recount. I was extremely delighted to see what I knew to be true in print. Read for yourself and be as shocked as we were, (the 'rest of the story'), that brought us to the historical ending to Election 2K. Thank you Michael Moore!
Rating: Summary: What a great book! Review: ...Michael Moore is saying lots of stuff that the current administration would rather he didn't. Michael Moore is speaking Truth to Power, and Power doesn't like that. What I like about it is that Michael Moore knows what he's talking about. He speaks for those of us who are outraged at what is happening in this country, and for anyone who has been following his email list about his tour across the country promoting this book, he is far from alone. But you have to read the book and his web site to know that. Because the US isn't going to tell you. And America the Beautiful is currently America Under Siege. I recommend this book as mandatory reading for anyone who wants to know what many Americans really think about what is going on. Grab it while you can -- before it gets banned, and Michael gets arrested as a terrorist with a mind of his own.
Rating: Summary: Hey Mike, You Forgot Jars -- Women Need Us to Open Jars Review: You have to hand it to Michael Moore: he stands by his principles. Even though he's become an international celebrity (they love him in Toronto), he still proudly carries the imprint of his Catholic/Union/Michigan industrial, "guy" roots. You can take Mike out of Flint, but you can't take Flint out of Mike. In the "about the author" section at the end of the book, Moore mentions that among other things, he is an Eagle Scout. Being one myself, I thought it might be useful to review his book according to the Boy Scout Laws. Therefore, we ask are the book and its author: Trustworthy: Yes, the book is trustworthy. Most of his claims are footed with their sources given. I certainly trust Mike more than most CEOs. The book tells it like it is. Loyal: The fact that Mike lives in Manhattan, spends a lot of time in Paris and still continues to visit Flint, MI is proof enough that he is loyal to his hometown. Outside of loyalty, why would anyone visit Flint? Despite all the failings he finds with the state of US governance, he still calls this home when he probably would feel a whole lot better in a place like Toronto or Stockholm. Helpful: Yes. The book is very helpful in spurring its readership to take action in the political process: write representatives, march, unionize, and run for office. I never thought about actually running for office until I read this book! Way to infuse some life into the national debate. Friendly: Yep, Mike is one big likeable lunk, about as friendly as a Labrador. Courteous: I found only one bad word in the whole book. I think the book is about as courteous as one can be when talking about hypercritical politicians, stolen elections and corporate greed. Kind: Yes. Mike is kind even where he could really sink his teeth in and give his prey a thrashing. Obedient: Well. The book doesn't advocate disobeying any laws. In fact the book demands that the powerful and privliged live by the same laws as us common folk. On the other hand, the book does encourage a healthy skepticism of power. I'm sure many corporate and political masters do not consider Mike very obedient. Cheerful: The book makes the Rep/Dem/Corporate trashing of America about as cheerful as anyone can possibly make it. Thrifty: Arthur Carey states in his 1915 "The Scouts Law in Practice", that "A scout is thrifty. He does not wantonly destroy property. He works faithfully, wastes, nothing, and makes the best use of his opportunities." Mike lives by this law. Unlike Enron, Global Crossing, and so many industrial polluters. Brave: Yep. It takes a lot of courage to speak truth to The Man. Clean: The book is suitable for family reading, though Mike himself could probably use a shave. Reverent: Yes. An entire chapter is a prayer to The All-Mighty, beseeching Him to awaken the Pharisees of Power to their in-born but little-used sense of compassion and humanity. Just a few more points: The one thing woman will still need from men (beyond the obvious) is not a long arm to reach a high shelf. No, the correct answer is "to open jars." The book is very effective at reminding all of us how the Democrats and Clinton conned us into thinking they are better than the Republicans. Some of the material is dated. Some of the material is addressed to those in high school, which is terrific, because the book engages the young in the political process. There's a real "you can affect a change in the world -- really" message here. The book was written pre-Enron and pre 9-11, and through no fault of its own, it shows. In fact, it almost predicts Enron. All in all, great job, Michael. Stupid White Men gets a thumbs up from me.
Rating: Summary: Enlightening Review: A great piece of journalism. I wish more writers had the courage and insight to engage in such needed muckraking. It really brings back the spirit of working journalism.
