Rating: Summary: Absolute Brilliance! Review: Stupid White Men, a work of comic and political genius by Michael Moore, exposes precisely what is slowly destroying our dear nation, while, at the same time, enlightening we, the citizens, on how to improve upon our situation. In other modern works centered around the state of the United States, fingers are merely pointed at the conservative, liberal, democratic, republican, or green party with vast hatred and a disregard for improvement. Blame will only send out nation further from success and happiness. On the other hand, Stupid White Men remains to be witty and wise, causing us to laugh and ponder at the same moment. It helps us use the divine right of democracy and citizenship against political corruption to find a way out of our national rut.
Rating: Summary: Too scary to be funny Review: As a foreigner, I can fortunately read this book with some element of dispassion-if I had to live in the USA I would not be able to do so because, although knowing the truth of Moore's writings, I would have to suffer the numbing refusals from the conservatives to do anything about these huge and destructive problems. I have lived in the States enough to know the absolute truth of what Moore says but I also lived there long enough to know that the blindness of much of the population will prevent any positive changes from occuring. Chapter Four, Kill Whitey, could have been written 30 years ago because even after all these years the problems facing African-Americans are exactly the same today as then-nobody has listened during these intervening years.. The conservatives offer the same logically mangled reasoning as they did then-"there is no problem", " Moore has his facts wrong"or "nothing a radical says can be true"- I've heard it all before. The one-star comments that I've read regarding this book could have been lifted from conservative news columnists anytime during the last 50 years-if nothing else all these whackos are tenacious! People have written that they enjoyed Moore's book because it was so funny-I hardly cracked a smile during my read of the book [I thought that the facts and statistics were all too true and scary and as I wrote, I've seen the same sorts of bad guys try to get away with the same sorts of illusions as they did 30 years ago].. I guess his book was so scary because no one in the States is going to do anything about the problem-the conservatives don't think there is a problem and anybody that identifies something that needs fixing, then a moronic commentator comes along and says, "Don't worry-the lefty's have their facts wrong and the problem only exists in their head". All of this shouldn't concern me now because I live in a smart country that pretty much knows what it's doing and tries to level the playing field for everyone-regardless of background. The problem is the fact that there's a big, dumb bull in the china shop and everybody must take an interest in what the bull is going to do.
Rating: Summary: Strictly for the bleeding hearts club band... Review: I borrowed this book out of curiosity. Maybe this man, who was once amusing, had done something different this time. To my sadness (and boredom) I was treated to the same political hatchet job that he's come to perfect over the past 5 years or so. If you STILL think that Al Gore won or that a crackpot conspiracy (lead by white Republicans) lies at the heart of every problem we have-then dig in. Moore is more than happy to endulge your every fantasy.Me,I was hoping for a return to the work that he did prior to the last few episodes of TV Nation. There he isolated on individual situations and shed light on the people affected. Here he sets his gun to scatter-the result is uneffective and whiney. This jackhammer style was seen toward the end of TV Nation's run. Once he chased an aloof CEO in "Roger & Me" looking for awnsers, at the end of Nation he was sending a guy in a chicken suit to bug them. That's what he does here-instead of taking on a handful of causes he just sets loose the chicken. It shows up in some of the over the top statements in the editorial review (particularly the one concerning Justice Scalia). Stupid White Men... also continues the major trend that may have me giving up on Moore for good-he's become completely unfunny. The portion of the book that I was able to read left my funny bone unscathed. He's basically become the liberal Rush Limbaugh-a blowhard who THINKS he's funny.Sure other people laugh but I think they are just being polite. Plus there is something fishy about a guy who rails against capitalism and corporations all day long-except when he's cashing a check. Like the editorial review says, Moore is as irreverent as The Onion. What it failed to clarify is the difference would be that The Onion is funny.
Rating: Summary: Moore Awful Truth Review: This is an amazing book. If by the time you have finished it you have not picked up a pen and written an angry letter to the editor (any editor of any newspaper), I will be surprised. This book moved me to act, and I am not sure the last time that happened; perhaps college? As a documentary film maker, Moore is at his best when he has a clear point to make and not all chapters in this book are equal, but there is something here for everyone. Moore's analysis of what really happened in the 2000 Presidential election is worth the price of the book. I have to admit, it upset me so much I put it down (several times, in fact) and picked it up again when calmer. For those of you who caught Moore's late lamented show on Bravo Network, "The Awful Truth," you will be familiar with the technique: Moore starts off with a situation, exaggerates it to humorous effect, and then tightens the noose until you realize that he was not kidding. It stops being satire and suddenly turns into reporting, and it is a stunning moment when you realize that he is letting the information speak for itself. This is what Moore wants: Read this book, get educated, and get involved. The powers that be do not want this (when has a book been on the best seller list of the NY Times for tens of weeks without being reviewed?). As an FYI, Moore backs up his claims with an elaborate Notes and Sources section at the end of the book, and you can do your own research.
Rating: Summary: Good Stuff Review: This book is hilarious. I think that things are taken a bit to seriously and this is the book for me. I've been sharing this book with family and friends
Rating: Summary: Michael Moore's writing is a riot! Review: Forget the left-right agenda. This book is worth its weight in gold just for the fun you can have reading it. Moore can present his point of view in such a splendid and humorous manner anyone will sit up and take notice(except bigoted people). Why can't Ann C be like that. Instead all she spews is venom. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an open mind and a sense of humour.
Rating: Summary: librarians rule OK Review: I wonder how many readers know that the presence of this book in its current form is due to a letter campaign begun by a librarian in Englewood NJ? When she heard Michael tell an audience that the publisher wished to censor some passages, to which he refused, and they threatened to pulp the first edition, she was spurred to action. Right now Michael is expressing his gratitude for librarians as bastions of free information access in society by promoting a campaign to raise librarians' salaries, amongst other issues. (For example, librarians are also being harrassed by the Patriot act, pressured in to releasing confidential circulation records.). Keep up the good work Micheal Moore and fellow librarians!
Rating: Summary: The best book you will have ever read in your life Review: Finally, someone to speak from the side of common sense. Someone to counter all the other bullheaded ultra-right-wingers... We have been in dire need of a new voice for reason and an advocate for true freedom and the American way. Hopefully Michael Moore is a harbinger for ideological progress.
Rating: Summary: Left overs Review: This book warms up the old morsels of heresy that are growing mold in every left winger's refrigerator. The world is a global village and Americans have made the village...their president. That is obvious. The book is unimaginative, politically correct, and the humor egotistical. Still, it might be a good gift to introduce reality to your ignorant cousin who thinks television news and the respectable print media contain anything besides misinformation for the oil and banking cannibals and their war machine. But is only an introduction to a small portion of what every reader of Counter-Punch, Z-Net and Indy Media already knows. Moore's analysis is not exactly cowardly, but it is conventional and timid. If you want insight from authors with the courage and acumen to challenge the Big Lies of the ruling elite, try Edward Hermann, Alexander Cockburn, Edward Said, Robert Fiske, Mazen Qumsiyeh, and Howard Zinn, instead.
Rating: Summary: ....Old White Men wearing dickies and wielding martinis... Review: The truth hurts. And this book stings, you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll call your senator and remind him that HE works for YOU. And thats only part of what will happen after you read this book. You'll find you see things differently. More clearly. You'll pick up a newspaper perhaps. You'll write an editorial. You might find yourself actually talking about something important at the next family dinner, instead of the usual weather conversation. In so many ways, after reading Mike's work, you'll change. And so will the world.
