Rating: Summary: hits it on the nose Review: funny, clever, sincere, biting, and unapologetic. All in all, a great book. I would say that this book is a cross between THE FARSIDE comics and the book THE DISTURBED WRITINGS OF ADAM COCHRAN.
Rating: Summary: Michael, thank you! We needed this wake up call! Review: This book has me so fired up that I just convinced my boss to order 10 copies for the office - and I'm not finished - I am just getting started. I am seeing the light, and there are "stupid white men" in front of it!!The humorous way that Michael Moore delivers this information makes it easier to take in all the horrifying data about the corruption of the Bush Administration/Corporate America and its direct relation to our national and international dilemas right now. But let me warn you, after reading this book I am not able to go about living my life the same way...I am starting to question everything, and guess what I am finding out, so are a lot of other people.
Rating: Summary: The parts about the Bush Regime are great . . . Review: . . . and Moore makes some good points about social and political injustices in the world. But make no mistake, this book covers no new ground. It's just the usual redundant liberal whining about guns, SUV's, beef, the environment and capitalism. Nothing new here. If you've heard one whiny liberal telling everyone else how to live their lives from their comfortable office chair, you've heard them all. Moore is no exception, just the usual liberal who thinks that the way to make the world safe and happy is to force everyone to be nice by making law after law after law. These people don't care who's freedom they trample on, just as long as no dolphins die and the hole in the ozone doesn't get any bigger. They don't realize that freedom is a two-way street. And Moore's pinko anti-American commentary is not welcome either. It's obvious that this book was published right before Sept. 11th, 2001, because Moore is very sympathetic to Islamic extremism in several places in this book. So if you're a liberal who believes that the only way to make everyone get along is to force them to with laws and more laws and higher taxes and then even more laws, then yeah, read this book. If you're a conservative (which ain't much better than a liberal), then yeah, read this book because it will make you mad and that makes me happy. If you're a Libertarian like me, avoid this book. Moore's views and ideas are not conducive to freedom.
Rating: Summary: Shameless, factless, baseless Review: If you are part of the social camp that goes home every night and cries about issues ranging from global warming to lack of affirmative action...than this book will provide enough joy to keep you up and night giggling yourself to sleep. The only problem is that the multitude of research that went into this book is grounded in the kind of baseless resources in which all liberal books are founded. These give the book an aire of "correctness," but if you sit down and actually think about the facts presented you are left scratching your head, because there aren't any. Unlike Ann Coulter's recent book "Slander," where she cites actual instances of liberals denigrating conservatives, then turns the insults back on them, Mr. Moore participates in the "Call 'em names" campaign because it is clear he really has no actual evidence that will do anyone, especially this country, any good. He attacks white males for making this country what it is, insulting the intelligence of anyone who can see that we live in the most powerful country the world has ever seen. Mr. Moore claims to know something about economics, yet as an economist, I can assure you that he does not. His ideas for the U.S. economy are the typical liberal answers that would lead our country to self-immolation: tax the rich and spend it on the poor. The only positive thing that comes out of this book is that it is clear that education in this country needs to take priority. If the majority of people in this country had any common sense and education whatsoever, then authors such as Michael Moore would actually have to DO something for a living instead of playing to the ignorance of the common man.
Rating: Summary: consideration for an interpretation Review: riveting. get out the visine cause your eyes will be red from rage, laughter, and sheer sleeplessness. this intuitive, forward-thinking book is no-nonsense truth. kudos to Mr. Moore for shedding some vision on the invisible-by-choice conditions in this country. particularly, "Kill Whitey" chapter was poignant, accurate, and humorously insightful regarding the perspective of the plight of black america in the oftentimes miseducated-by-the-media minds of nonblack folk. i've got my signs ready at-will to hang on the establishments of injustice. and thumbs up for courage, character, and conscience for brutal affirmative action in hiring some people who are just trying to get crumbs of the crust of the american pie. would've been nice to cite more facts about the african-american community such as more are middle class than poor, educated than not, law-abiding than in jail, diverse vs. monolithic, accomplished vs. apathetic, investors vs. inconsequential, and if banks and other "nonlending" agencies would stop stamping "uh, don't think so" on blacks' forehead when they apply for loans, there would be more entrepreneurs than unemployed. but all in all, not bad for a group with raped history, raped economic parity, raped names, raped reparations, and just plain raped. -- anywho, this is a must-read book!!
Rating: Summary: A Book trashing rich white guys written by a rich white guy Review: Michael Moore has proven once again that if you narrow your search enough, you can find "proof" to back anything you want. The book is based loosely on facts, and then stretched. There are always 3 sides to any political situation; the left, the right, and the truth. Michael has disregarded the right and the truth, and focused only on the left. That is his option of course, it is his book. But to try and pass it off as anything other than right-hating, bush-whacking, without regard to ALL the facts, is unethical. I have been to Moore's website numerous times over the last year, and have read his tripe, and then followed up with my own research to learn the WHOLE story. In most instances, his arguements, and statements are based on nothing more than rumor, inuendo, and half-truths. Just enough to get the blood boiling for anyone who is too lazy to learn the facts for themselves. This book is just "moore" of the same. Unless you are buying it for the entertainment value, don't waste your money.
Rating: Summary: He Dares to Speak Out Review: Look out, corporate greedmongers! That meddlesome guy you look on as some kind of traitorous Communist is back again! Mike dares to speak out, and many of you have turned pale with embarrassment in his wake. After all, this is the same guy who did the daring "Roger and Me." The bottom line was that this Flint, Michigan native hated to see his whole town turned upside down and people evicted from their homes while unemployment reigned supreme. Once the site of the world's largest automotive plant, where Buicks were produced, the striped-pants brigade decided it would be cheaper to jettison the union and workers laboring at a decent pay level to whistle Dixie, go South and hire workers at low wages with no union standing in the way, upholding workers' rights. What would happen to the folks in Flint? Well...they would just have to learn to cope. The job losses from GM's departure coupled with the ripple effect left a ghost town and one particularly steamed up resident with a sharp creative brain and the willingness to speak out. That someone is Michael Moore and he has been speaking up for America's working families and downtrodden ever since. These are the folks without the big bucks to gain access to the politicians in Washington. How nice that they have a champion in Moore. Moore in this brilliantly satirical work, reminiscent of the best of Swift and Rabelais, takes deadly aim at the "greed is good" mantra of the Bush-Cheney brigade. After dissecting the corruption in the Bush "victory" in Florida thanks to the outright thievery of Governor Jeb and Catherine Harris, he moves on to the Bush Cabinet, citing all of the corporate and major oil involvements, concluding that they have arrived in Washington not to serve the people, as Thomas Jefferson wisely advocated so long ago, but to fill their pockets. Keep churning out the words, Michael! Your bestseller status indicates that there are many out there paying heed.
Rating: Summary: Interesting read...but not Moore's best Review: I've loved Michael Moore's work since my high school history teacher showed us Roger and Me and several episodes of TV Nation. However, I was somewhat disappointed with this book - I think a few of the chapters are poorly focused, and the book rambles on at times. Also, Moore's self-promotion reached an all time annoying high in this volume. Still, the book is packed with information and I found it funny at times.
Rating: Summary: Very funny, and also quite accurate Review: Michael Moore is great at showing the stupidity and the lies that come through the media and from the conservative right, and even sometimes from the democrat left. I have long appreciated Moore's work for social jsutice and worker's rights and intelligent discourse and getting us to change our ways to take care of the planet, and to take care of each other. This book falls short in a few places when his soapbox seems to large, and every now and again his statements are made with such a wide sweep, and not backed up with references, that I am left wondering if that's him being hyperbolic, rhetorical, or if he really thinks that his statement is true. Overall, though, another important work from one of the few ordinary guys working hard to expose the truth, and expose the lies, of the republican right, of corporate america, and of others in the public sphere of discourse who put their own greed in front of the good of the people.
Rating: Summary: Fired Up Review: Hello All, As the title of this review might indicate, this book does just that, fires you up to get off your (rear), and DO SOMETHING to turn this country around! I started reading this book on a Thursday afternoon, and couldn't put it down. WOW, the things Michael knows about the Bush camp will just blow you away. I've always loved what Michael Moore produces, it's a bit RAW and in your face but hey, if that's what it takes to MOTIVATE people these days, then why not?! Ok, so now you're asking, "if you love this book so much, why only 4 stars?" Well, the answer is simple, I think Michael can do better.(Besides, I don't want his head to swell) So, if you have an afternoon or two and want a great read, then I HIGHLY recommend this title. Ciao!!
