Rating: Summary: Just heard on "Imus In The Morning..." Review: Don Imus: "I don't agree with this book, but it's the funniest thing I've read in years. I've forced about 15 people to read it and they all thought it was funny."Take it to heart. This book slings plenty of mud at Republicans and Democrats. Clinton, Gore, W, are all exposed. If you are one of those folks who hero-worships a political party, give this book a read. Now in it's FORTIETH printing, that's something like 20 copies sold for almost any other hardcover non-fiction title released in 2002. ... It is that good and you're missing out if you haven't read it.
Rating: Summary: A lesson in conspiracy and propaganda Review: I have a hard time describing exactly what this book is about, so I will relay two important arguments Michael Moore himself makes. Point One: He claims an essential part of the Florida "conspiracy" to elect George W. Bush occurred when the Jeb Bush administration passed a law disallowing convicted felons to vote. Moore points out that 31% of Black males are felons and 90% of blacks are democrats. Thus, (in his opinion) this legislation was passed to help Republicans and had nothing to do with the fact that convicted felons aren't the best people to be making decisions for America. Point Two: The book contains a open letter from Moore to George W. Bush that accuses him of being an alcoholic and questions whether he can actually read...yes, I said "read." So, if you enjoy reading far-reaching conspiracy theories and rude, disrespectful letters to the President of the United States, this book will be a pleasurable read. If you find fuzzy logic in Point One and see Point Two as childish, then you probably should skip this title. Moore has done his homework and he works very hard to spin facts to support his beliefs. If he were a student in an introductory composition class, however, his professor would warn him against using too many ad hominem attacks and red herrings. My opinion is not shaped by the fact that Moore is a liberal. In fact, I suggest books by two other liberals on Bush and the 2000 election instead of this one. Bob Woodward's "Bush at War" and Alan Dershowitz's "Supreme Injustice" are much better written books by more responsible authors.
Rating: Summary: Great Fun Review: I won't comment on the books politics, I'm sure there are many other reviews talking about that. I will say this though, this is one funny book, not only that but its infuriating as well, at times I was almost at tears of frustration at the stupidity not only from these elite Americans but from humanity itself. Now that Mike Moore has gained popularity through his new film Bowling For Columbine the media has either potrayed him as a hero or a stupid white man himself who offers unworkable ideas etc etc. I'm sure you know what I mean,... I think he is a regular man who's doing what he thinks he can, sometimes he gets it wrong but alot of the time he get its very right and he injects alot of humour along the way. In the hands of another writer this could have been a very dour and serious book, and wouldn't of sold near as many copies, people love Mike Moore not only because hes fighting for the little guy but he's funny, and laughter is always the most powerful weapon.
Rating: Summary: A bit of balance Review: Having come to 'Stupid White Men' after seeing Michael Moore's 'Bowling for Columbine', I really wanted to like this book. However, Moore suits film far better than the written word. On screen, his everyman persona and hard hitting diatribes make an impact, which one cannot examine too closely in the 100 minutes afforded by the film. But in print, Moore's lazy research fatally undermines him. In particular, his position that the current recession 'does not exist' is clearly untenable. He attempts to pin this on a conspiracy of big business and high taxpayers. He completely ignores the impact of over-investment during the tech boom, with companies losing huge sums of money in now worthless tech stocks and thus having to cut back spending. This willingness to accept the worst, without considering a possibly more rational explanation is also visible in the chapter when he claims that the US runs the largest budget deficit in the world. As far as I'm aware, the US has run a budget surplus for the last three years. The most damning statement Moore makes is in his list of world leaders. I have a lot of time for his arguments that Dubya was elected on somewhat shaky grounds... (!) However, he then peevishly refers to him as the "President" throughout (his punctuation). And yet, he's perfectly happy to refer to the premiers of North Korea, Indonesia, Kenya, and Burma, as if these countries were paragons of democratic virtue. Moore's saving grace is his sheer visceral anger. I might not agree with him the whole time, but this is a polemic in the mould of 19th Century writing. No-one should believe a word he says without further investigation of their own, but this is a damn good read.
Rating: Summary: A Good Name for Michael Moore's Biography! Review: Moore is not an historian, a political scientist, or a researcher, and goes out of his way to prove it! His endnotes are so vague that it would take a team of researchers to make any sense out of them. As a history major with a political science minor I can say without reservation that this book is the very model of JUNK SCIENCE! Moore goes on a rant that lasts for several hundred pages offering only problems and no solutions. He takes bits and pieces of items that he does cite and either takes them out of context or uses them only in part in a lame attempt to prove his point. Perhaps Michael Moore and Amiri Baraka should consult together on the next book and they could stretch fiction and fantasy to a whole new level! It gets one star only because Amazon.com will not let me take stars away! My greatest problem now is that I cannot with anything approaching a clear conscience give or sell this book to anyone, less they accept Moore's rant without an inquiring mind. Since it will not fit into my shredder its fate is yet to be determined. Breaking News: I've finally decided an appropriate fate for this book; I'm cutting it in half with a bandsaw! This way the drivel that passes for fact on the inside of this copy will not be passed on. And it can be properly displayed in my library as an amusing, but pointless artifact that now has no real purpose. But wait, who am I kidding, it had no real purpose before, unless you have only half a brain, an absolute inability to research facts for yourself, and of course no ability to think on your own.
Rating: Summary: Rape of Nanking, anyone? Review: He LITERALLY says that white people are responsible for every bad thing in history. He blames them for slavery. Ha! It's true they did it, but they didn't invent it. It has gone on for thousands of years, and still goes on in some places, to much worse degrees and in larger numbers. And how about the Rape of Nanking? That is one of the most infamous slaughters in history (along with Tianemen Square). I'm glad I found the book "Why the Lef Hates America" by Daniel J. Flynn. The kind of people mentioned in that book fit the description of Michael Moore exactly. If he wants to "Kill Whitey", to quote one of his chapters, he should take a nice long walk off a really short pier, or go live in China. Whichever's worse.
Rating: Summary: A Great Book Review: A great book... The times they are a changing... The book is a must read for the current times....
Rating: Summary: Why is it a bestseller? Review: That is the question that it should be asked. Filled with generalities, embezzled statistics, circular references and logic borrowed from The Simpsons. If the author really thought that Bush is the greater evil, he shouldn't help the cause by voting Nader and taking votes from Gore. Can't believe the author made milions writing smtg like this but then again it won't be the first time.
Rating: Summary: Typical Michael Moore. Pithy and humorous Review: A Very enjoyable read. As usual, Moore is funny and astute.
Rating: Summary: MM says it best Review: michael moore's new book is beyond a good read; it's an essential read. much like bowling for columbine, it maintains a humorous wit throughout, but the hard-hitting facts are what keeps you hooked. stupid white men is an intelligent, thought-provoking analysis of the state of america and is a must-read for the millions of passive americans who will hopefully be empowered to do more, after reading michael moore's book.
