Rating: Summary: A man with answers or a big fat joke? Review: At last, a Joseph Goebbles for the radical left's worn out propaganda! If white men are indeed stupid, then Moore is the standard. Don't waste your time on this book.
Rating: Summary: Factually Incorrect But a Good Laugh None the Less! Review: Michael Moore's book Stupid White Men assesses the questionable state of modern American politics and its democracy with a critical eye. The book provides a refreshing and humorous review of American politics, which the myopic mainstream American media has neglected. It is a political easy read, which may be why it's remained on The New York Times bestseller list for over forty weeks running. This accessibility may also explain why its popularity has surpassed many other books regarding American politics published over the last two years. Despite Moore's popularity his writing does require some literary and journalistic criticism.Moore's rants of rage through personal attacks and cheap shots at the Bush administration and the rich are comical but detract from the real political issues and the validity of his arguments. The book is laced with 'facts and figures' but lacks the academic finesse and journalistic integrity of a true documentary. If one were inclined to check all of his footnote references (like Ben Fitz on the Spinsnity.com web page), it would be obvious that at least some of his facts are inaccurate. Anyone with a slightly sceptical mind would be inclined to confirm most of these facts elsewhere before quoting them to a friend. And if you've learned anything from the book, you will check all the facts you're reading! Despite some factual flaws it is a pleasant relief to see some Americans critically examining their country's politics at home and abroad. If nothing else, the book will definitely get you laughing out loud.
Rating: Summary: It's a Conspiracy! Review: I think Michael Moore has finally reached his limit of relevance, this book wasn't funny as much as a ceaseless rambling of all the bad things he sees around us, and some truly whacko ideas on what's behind it all. (Hey, I can come up with facts, too. It's how they're interpreted...) The book doesn't make much sense and gets worse as it goes on. ... But more to the point, if the world is trashed by stupid white men who use their power and connections to impress their views on us and take our money, and Moore is a white millionaire who uses his power and connections to impress his views in his books and films people buy....what makes him so much different? This isn't some intellectual monologue, if it was he had more ideas on how the country could be improved or what to do about all the Stupid People. Instead it's a rant by a man with an ego running out of ideas. ... Moore will make some money off this as usual, hopefully next time he'll have something better to do than complain.
Rating: Summary: Right on! Chalk one up for the silent majority. Review: Finally there is a voice for the silent majority who is tired of the Republicans' rape of the constitution, human rights, the poor, the ethnic minorities, enviroment, world opinion, education, science, and the rights of smaller nations. At the same time, we are almost equally tired of the complicities of the Democrats by their silence and obsequious courting of the vocal conservative minority and wealthy donors; but not yet ready to commit to the Green Party. This book is imminently readable, entertaining and is a must read for all reasonable Americans.
Rating: Summary: 2.5 stars Review: First off, I am a Michael Moore fan. I've seen his movies, "Roger and Me," "The Big One," and "Bowling for Columbine," (in theaters no less) and caught every episode of "TV Nation," and "The Awful Truth" when they had their TV runs. So then, why only two stars? Simple. His routine just doesn't translate to the printed page very well. Without his "ah shucks" persona and mannerisms, his seemingly excruciating politeness to those he questions (addressing them as sir, etc.) and his surprisingly lighthearted manner in which he points out the absurd and downright outrageous, he manages to come across as little more than a ranter -- someone with a good handle on the problem but little else especially since many of his attempts at humor here fall flat. It's a long way from the big (or small) screen to the printed page and somethings just get lost in the translation. Moore certainly makes some very valid points and, at times, his humor does shine through, but until he can figure out how to bring his screen persona to the more intimate page level maybe he should stick with the former. For a better blend of progressive politcal thought with humor, check out Molly Ivins and Jim Hightower.
Rating: Summary: Laughs for the Shallow Review: Let me get this straight. Michael Moore, a rich, middle aged white guy- is ripping on rich, middle aged white guys. Funny how we so often end up the very things we make fun of. Moore's analysis is shallow, but it's not wit that he's counting on for laughs. Or intellect, or even some knowledge of the world as it actually is, for that matter. He embraces racists and dictators, and condemns democracies. But apparantly a lot of people enjoy that sort of thing.
Rating: Summary: You have to 'GET IT' Review: This type of political and PC satire is often hard to fully grasp if one does not previously know a lot of the knowledge contained herein, seeing it for the first time. The author, Micheal Moore, brings to the forefront several facts, many that he documents, yet at the same time presents them in a very humorous manner. The humor is not limited to his presentation however, while continually adding gas to the fire, he entertains us with radical solutions (meant hilariously MOST of the time) throughout which make it a fun and easy read. Many will understand a lot of the humor, but few can truly understand without further background on at least some of the issues he discusses (this is not true for all the material he covers). Those for example, biased by racism or partisan values will surely not get the jokes that a clear minded person unguided by emotional bias would get. However, taking the statistics and facts alone will also be provocative for the mind that may just be starting to scratch the surface on the subjects he presents. Further, taking everything Mr. Moore says literally would be a shame, as that's not his purpose. The point he is making, in this reader's humble opinion, is to provide some very disturbing and interesting facts on important subjects that will arose the mind, and do so in an extremely entertaining manner. Chances are, during this reading you will feel a mix of emotion that will inspire you to take action on the one hand, and laugh out loud on the other. I strongly recommend it for both entertainment and public worth.
Rating: Summary: Worthless, a complete waste of time. Review: An utterly worthless read. Devoid of facts and filled with half-truths and misstatements. Moore just bursts out with hate-filled, shrill, leftist rhetoric supported by nothing more than his own "because I said so" logic (if you can call it that). Moore comes across as a smarmy, contemptuous, bitter, man. A bitter, nasty screed by a self-hating, guilty white liberal, in my opinion. Not worth your time.
Rating: Summary: Stupid White Men Review: As a boy of caucasion decent, I am offended by this "man". I am insulted by his premise, and the title as well. Michael Moore is obivously someone who hates this country and my suggestion would be to buy the book "The Savage Nation" by Michael Savage. Dr. Savage is truly a man who loves this country and supports the roots that our country was founded on. Michael Moore, deserves to have his book used for toilet paper.
Rating: Summary: Spot on! Moore's writing is inspiring. Review: Drop what you are doing. Go out and watch "Bowling for Columbine." Afterwards rent "The Big One" and "Roger & Me." Then buy this book and "Downsize This!" and read them both. After that you will be left to try and answer the important questions that the USA needs to address. Michael Moore builds critical-thinking skills....something this country is severely lacking.
