Rating: Summary: Thought provoking but sometimes too sensational Review: I agree with many of Moore's points in this book. Our fair nation is being run down by a bunch of Yahoos. However, I did find that Moore takes the extreme route more often than not, even if it means broadcasting vast generalizations that may not always be true. In Chapter 4 he attacks the recycling industry, claiming that it is a sham industry, the materials all end up at the landfill and it is basically a waste of time to recycle. This may be true in the case Moore researched, but it is certainly not a sham industry and Moore should be ashamed of himself for encouraging so many folks to blow off this worthwhile endeavor. That having been said, the book is thought provoking and I think folks should read it just to get a sense of what might be going on in the oval office without the public's knowledge.
Rating: Summary: I thought this book was hillarious Review: Micheal Moore. What else is there to say. The reason I loved this book and others of Micheal's is: You can only take the crushing depression that comes with thinking about he state of affairs in the world nowadays for so long. Mike provides a way to stay aware and socially conscieous, with out dilluting or ignoring the issues at hand. This book definitly delivers in that area, with a hard examination of corperate America that makes you laugh and cry at the same time. This book is a definite must read.
Rating: Summary: A survival guide book in nowaday's American Jungle Review: Don't treat Michael Moore's books and documentary films as some kind comic books or the librals' yakkings. This is the guy who really loves America and its people who have been fooled and screwed by the goverment and corporate so long. He is a preacher, a teacher, an honest jourlist with deep love and conscience as every true American should be. His books and films undoubtedly would become the thorns to the right wing people in bed with the top 5 percent of the richest people or families in America. He is the modern day Catcher-in-the-rye comes with iron will to peel off the phony outlook of the rich and powerful. We have learned a lot from his fact-finding works and only wish there are more honest and candid Americans would do the same for us. The whole nation, not even to be reminded constantly by the voices from Michael Moore and few others, is definitely going downhill. We have to look back to the human civilization and history. No powerful nations or dynasties ever last over several hundred years so far once they fell prey to corruption, bureaucracy, greed, self-righteous, self-centered imperialism & egoism. America now is at the threshhold of either leading to a dim future or a faster oblivion. Any American with open mind and basic common senses would know the latter might be inevitable. Flip open the history books and you'll find out that any powerful dynasty before falling apart is just like what we see and face today. And who's really got all the benefits after September 11?
Rating: Summary: Does the title apply to him??? Review: I don't know how, but I finished this book without ripping out every page and using those pages instead of the New York Times to aid in the toilet training of my dog. Absolutely devoid of factual, tangible material, the "facts" or rather, points, made by the author are presented via an endless stream of facetious, undocumented comments and seditious allegations about our political system. This platitudinous tirade can be compared to works such as "The Pokey Little Puppy" and "Curious George" in terms of mental aptitude and esoteric appeal, while otherwise laughably comparable to Hitler's rant "Mein Kampf" mostly due to the incredible allegations and grandiloquent speech combined with genuinely horrible sentence structure. I highly recommend this book to the average Iraqi or Cuban kindergarten student, as they are taught to misunderstand America through misguided, propagandist dogma presented in a fairy tale. Truly the greatest communist fairy tale I have ever read, Moore really says it all in this gigantic run-on sentence filled with fallacy and coupled with nihilism, contempt and ignorant hatred. While maintaining a certain degree of light-hearted toilet humor and white boy jokes which aren't funny until he speaks out against racism, discrimination, and ignorance, Moore openly reveals his utter contempt for logic and common sense. I advise the reader to compare with Hannity or Savage and objectively view the contrast between non-fiction and nonsense. Well, I would venture to guess that the title does apply to him as he is rich and white and, most definitely, a sorry excuse for the state of the nation, not to mention a definitive factor in the Democratic failure in the 2002 elections. Of course, Moore thinks it was all a right-wing conspiracy just like 9/11 so it doesn't matter. Savage's #1 standing in the NYTimes bestseller list is a conspiracy, too? Save that for the sequel, Mike.
Rating: Summary: Really not that good Review: I agree with a fellow reviewer. Moore's movies are OK, but his humor doesn't translate well in book form. In fact, I found his jokes pretty tiring and annoying after a while. If I'm reading a book about politics, I want facts not a bunch of social commentary mixed in with lame jokes. I actually think Moore comes off a little hypocritical in the book. Frankly, this book was a struggle to finish. Good for a grade schooler or high school at best.
Rating: Summary: Nightmares and echoing laughter Review: You gotta be thankful for Michael Moore's hardcore humor. Were it not for that then the contents of this book would emerge for what they really are: the american nightmare. There is possibly no other "sane" method left on how to look on the current situation on the U.S other than dress it up in heavy-duty wit. The facts that Moore lays out in "Stupid white men.." are simply too scary. Stolen and rigged elections? Check. A president who never got elected with an extreme anti-people right wing agenda? Check. The enviromental and financial breakdown of a huge country while its own people are disinformed and misled about it? Yep, in the book too. The ongoing, often in-yer-face racism in america? Ya betcha, in here too. The continuing neglect of urgent social problems (education, infrastructure, welfare) because of the disanalogical money-pumping into the arms and military industry? Uh-huh, check. The really serious problem of America lacking a second party? Yessir, Moore does a stunning job brining this onto the surface. The Democrats are not opposition he claims and hits us with indisputable arguments. A society that is actually a boiling pot ready to explode with unpredictable results? Inevitable conclusion. You have to wonder why the establishment is not bothered by books like this one. Or why the Moores of America aren't considered a threat by the elite. Some will say "well, thats the triumph of free speech". Hmm, i beg to differ on that one. That's the triumph of a well-oiled brainwashing mashine. You would think (and hope) that books like this have a tremendous impact, that they have the potential to bring change, to make people think, or at the very least to start waking people up. Call me a pessimist but i doubt it will happen. Point remains that it is hard to disagree with what mr. Moore professes here. After all it is not mere "opinions" he lays before us. It is facts, and as you might or might not know facts are facts. It's also optimistic (as other reviewers pointed out too) that Moore serves as en example on why faith on the american people isn't entirely lost. It's close to that but not entirely. Lastly, it's not the first time that facts like these have been detailed and recorded in a book. Chomsky comes to mind. Others, many others, many Americans in fact too. The big difference between their and Moore's effort is accessibility. The average reader (now, thats a term that's always troubled me) wont have to sift through rhetoric and terms he doesnt understand. Moore's language reminds me often of that of Bill Hicks. To the point, cynical, well substanstiated and sarcastic as it gets. Truly overwhelming.
Rating: Summary: Too much Liberal Nonsense Review: Once again, a worthless liberal book that whines about the problems of the nation and finds everyone to blame for it except themselves. This book is not worth the time since all the stats and "facts" Moore points out are mostly made up from his "sources." Keep looking for a different book to buy.
Rating: Summary: A must read for all patriots Review: Being a white man (ignorant, not stupid) I felt that I had to read this book. Despite the title and goofy cover, the book gives a very rational and understandable account of the reasons for the mess that we are in and what to do about it. The reading level is high school to adult, with no specific knowledge needed.
Rating: Summary: Country run by the top 10% at the expense of the other 90% Review: Mike does an excellent job of pointing out the crudity of Governor Bush's government. Policy benefits the top 10% while the bottom 90% pay for it. Don't believe that hype about those making more paying a higher percentage in taxes. 17 percent of the top 88 companies paid no taxes at all last year thanks to loopholes and graft. 17% of those even got the government to PAY THEM! Meanwhile, Democrats are just the exact same Republicans with Sierra Club stickers on their SUVs to make them feel better. There is no difference!! Examine the facts not the rhetoric. Next time american THINK, ACT, VOTE!! What happened to doing the right thing, justice, honor? They can only rig an election if it's close.
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: For a european reader this is the ultimat book not to entirely loose trust in americans. Fascinating as well as shoking to read how politics is made and what an inidividual can do, in order to stop this scandalous procedure. Kind of a wake-up-book that makes you laugh and cry the very same time. Highly recommended to every open brain!
