Rating: Summary: Stupid? Review: As one of the 90%'s, I felt compelled to recommend this book. It was refreshing to find someone more cynical than myself. But, if we believe Mr. Moore, the people who have infiltrated the positions of power in the U.S. aren't stupid at all. Evil? Perhaps. Arrogant? Possibly. Racist, rich racketeers? Maybe. Dishonest, dangerous deviants? More than likely. But, notwithstanding our illiterate "president," the antithesis of stupid. What this book points out, in a laugh-out-loud way, is that the rest of us are stupid for letting them get away with it for so long. Lack of knowledge, time, health and money shouldn't be acceptable excuses for our apathy. We can only blame government deficiencies on ourselves when our "representatives" don't realize we don't want them to cut funding for education, make healthcare unaffordable for the majority of us, increase taxes and decrease services, keep the minimum wage lower than poverty level, pour our tax dollars into creating the means of our eventual and inevitable destruction and continually poison our natural resources, and, in turn, the world's population by carelessness and greed. We have to take some modicum of responsibility and tell them, "stop doing that." Or accept the blame once we've finally annihilated ourselves. On the other hand, it's hard to worry about what Washington is up to if you can't read above a fourth grade level, have holes in your brain caused by the food you consume, can't afford to visit a doctor because they've all had to leave town due to the cost of malpractice insurance, and have to work two jobs just to pay for your digital cable and keep gas in your SUV. But the joke will be on them when they eradicate the entire human race and they're the only ones left. What will they do for fun then? Don't read this book if you have high blood pressure or if you're easily frightened by reality. Do read this book if you can read, know how to laugh, aren't affiliated with any political party, haven't gotten rich at someone else's expense and would like to find out just how stupid you really are. It's full of facts, figures, and helpful suggestions for turning yourself into an elected official with an attitude. You, too, can contribute to the problems of this great nation. The saddest fact of all, though, is that for all our problems, the U.S. is still one of the best places in the world to live. But it could be better. Just ask Mr. Moore.
Rating: Summary: No answers here. Review: Michael Moore is one of those people that feels compelled to give their "expert" opinion on subjects that they really don't know anything about. He puts forth facts and figures and hopes that nobody really checks into whether or not they are true (most of his facts and figures are not true. Look at the references in the back of the book). He bases all of his arguments on "feelings". He is a typical liberal socialist wanting everyone else to get out of their SUV, pay more taxes, help the poor, save the environment, etc. He feels that by speaking out on the behalf of the poor, minorities, the down trodden, that he's done his part to save the world. He cries and complains yet has no answers to any of the problems that he talks about. ...It's people like him that are responsible for the state of our nation. Immorality, political correctness, it takes a village mentality, no responsibility, affirmative action, etc. Do everyone a favor and don't waste your money on his junk. Send your check to a charity that actually helps people.
Rating: Summary: R-E-A-D I-T. Review: Moore is like Hitchcock in that he is extremely talented at entertaining us and scaring the hell out of us simultaneously. Read this book --- especially if you, like me, are a stupid white man. -Thom Rutledge, author of Embracing Fear (HarperSanFrancisco)
Rating: Summary: Please read this book! Review: As someone who lives outside America (and indeed is not American) I found this book shocking and disturbing. I also turned the last page hoping that every American, well, those who can read, would read this book. It slows down in the second half, but it is a must read for anyone who cares about what America is, and why it is. And what it is doing to the rest of the world.
Rating: Summary: Right and wrong not about color Review: Dr. King, once said, "Focus on the message and not were the message is coming from." I live by this creed but I have to say this time, I have completely ignored Dr. King's wises words. Look America where this is coming from and where it is coming from becasue maybe white America will listen to what blacks and Hispanics have been trying to say. This book is about right and wrong not about color. I must say that the book is the number one book in Japan right now (translated into Japanese). This book is not sold on any of the military base here in Japan...funny. No book shelve is complete with this book.
Rating: Summary: thought provoking Review: Stupid White Men is filmmaker Michael ( Roger and Me , Bowling for Columbine ) Moore's third book. Part political/social commentary, part humor, this was a very interesting book to read. Moore gives his opinions on topics such as the 2000 Presidential Election, the lack of difference between Democrats and Republicans, education, the real dangers of white people, and other subjects. His opinions closely mirror those of Ralph Nader's Green Party (a fact which Moore readily admits). Michael Moore calls President George W Bush the Thief in Chief and always makes sure to put the title "President" in quotes. Moore maintains that Bush deliberately stole the election in Florida. While Moore makes mention several times that Al Gore won the popular vote, the popular vote is not what decides elections. The electorate vote is what decides elections and the electorate is determined state by state. It is Moore's stance that Bush, his brother and other friends/associates worked to defraud and disenfranchise thousands of black voters and that Bush had pushed to close the recounts as soon as he had any sort of a lead. With the voter fraud, not to mention the poor balloting procedures in several Florida counties, Moore gives evidence that Bush defrauded the nation by stealing the presidential election. If these allegations are true, Bush has no right to public office. The problem is that Moore does not document his sources very well. It does appear that he cites all his sources in the notes section at the end of the book, but it isn't very well organized. The citations include comments like "the facts can be found in the article...". That is all well and good, but he doesn't identify which facts and figures he is quoting, so we don't know if Moore is making anything up and what he is exaggerating for effect. For most of the book, Moore comes off as somewhat shrill when discussing Republicans. Their stances on criminal justice, abortion, and social issues deeply offend Michael Moore and so when he makes a list of the ills of any particular administration, he includes things like faith-based charities, opposition to late term abortion, the death penalty. While some issues I believe he has a point on (environmental ones, mostly), I do disagree with many issues that Moore is so adamant about. I give Moore credit for writing a well thought out, interesting and funny book. I just disagree with some of his conclusions
Rating: Summary: Wildly Overrated Review: Remember that kid in high school that was full of angst, angry at the unfairness of the world and telling anybody who'd listen about how sucky his life was? Never really doing anything to make it better, but griping nonstop? Imagine that kid all grown up and, considered a spokesman for the disenfranchised (though he's now wealthy), still telling anyone who'll listen, spewing it onto a page and considering it literature, or, God forbid, "advice" on how to improve the state of the world. This book makes me ashamed to be a liberal. Save your money and subscribe to a newspaper, so you can get your facts straight, instead of the re-hashed, re-spun poser nonsense.
Rating: Summary: ...by a foolish white man Review: Moore is, when he chooses to be, a pretty smart fellow, and that's about the best thing I have to say about him. Most of the time he chooses otherwise. Since he first appeared in the national scene with "Roger & Me," Moore has frequently twisted the truth to serve his own purposes -- which themselves are mind-numbingly vague. Example: He goes on and on about how Bush "stole" the Presidency (a Presidency that, one way or the other, was going to be determined by a tiny minority of votes), but then does an about-face and admits (without really admitting) that Gore is just as much an idiot and a criminal as Bush is. So I'm supposed to be [angry] that one crook stole the presidency from another? Great. Like Ann Coulter, like Rush Limbaugh, and all the other fools making huge amounts of money trolling up our airwaves, Moore is adept at moving his mouth around with great sound and fury, signifying nothing. The fact that he's a leftist somehow makes him agreeable to many leftists, which I think is a ... shame. People like him add much coal to the conservative claim that liberals are weak-minded, petty, and prone to groupthink. Hell, his blue-collar and anti-racist facade make Limbaugh look good. At least Rush is honest about being an elitist, anti-intellectual dunderhead. That said, there are some good tidbits in the book, though with Moore reporting you never know if they're true or not. The bit about Pres. Bush's eco-friendly ranch was delightful, in a terribly disturbing way.
Rating: Summary: Required reading.... Review: This book is so important and relevent to our times, that if I were a college professor I would place this book in the required book list, even if I taught physics! We need to know how our society functions (not only for our well-being for the planet's well-being as well), and it's sad that people living across the Atlantic (in the UK) watching their BBC news are more knowledgeable about the US than we are (which is why I watch the BBC news). After reading this book you'll be shocked, entertained and disgusted all at once. But you'll be glad you picked it up. I'll just say that this book (along with the film Bowling for Columbine) should be a wake up call to all Americans. No, I am not a hippie or greenpeace activist, I am just a regular citizen that wants to know the truth, and this book will do that for you. If you only purchase one book this year let this one be it.
Rating: Summary: stirring the pot Review: Michael Moore does know how to push all the "right" buttons, doesn't he? and not just on the local candy machine. For a sometimes stupid fat white guy, he does offer up some amusing diatribes and reveries that are certain to prompt discussions. I like how he applies the same brazen in your face methods of his enemy (the Right). He comes on so belligerent and overbearing at times that one could mistake him for a Republican mole. Remember how much money the government gets off book sale taxes. If you are feeling a bit sinful and wanting to take a trip on the wild "liberal" side, read this one and then Robert Anton Wilson's TSOG. They will surely fuel you with necessary intellectual ammunition to delightfully upset 30-40% of the people at your next party (if you live in a city like mine, maybe 80-90%). Thank the gods for free speech!
