Summary: A Good Book
Review: First off, too "Ezekial Rage", don't spam a huge bashing review twice! Once is enough...

Well, anyways. I found this book to be pretty good, reading it immediatly after seeing his great documentary, Bowling for Columbine. It's a little extreme at points, and somtimes he canbe just plain stupid, but over all its a solid book.

Summary: Umm....
Review: I guess there is something to learn somewhere in the book. I am having trouble finding it between the [complaining] fits. There is plenty of information but no sources to back the findings. Some items are exaggerated making this a great humor source for non Americans. It kind of exposes potential weaknesses in America to the world. After the terrorism attacks, this is not the time for it. I guess I kind of got blocked by the title with Stupid White Men because people like Elaine Chao and Condoleezza Rice are not men and Colin Powell is neither stupid nor white. Maybe Bitchy White Man could have been a better title.

Summary: Stupid Blanket Observations....but mostly a good book.
Review: If I may, I would like to start off by saying that I like & respect Michael Moore. I feel he is very right on many of the issues stated in this book. I agree with his "Bush stole the election" assessment, as well as how the great masses of people in this country are drone-like in generating wealth for the rich. Naturally, the wealthy are loath to return the favor. He's spot on about how corporate sponsorships of public schools is a massive conflict of interest. This nation really IS being run by stupid white men. In general, he's right about most of the issues raised in this book. That said, Mr. Moore also makes some rather dumb observations.

First of all, he takes refuge in the "Blame Whitey" assumption that has been touted seemingly forever. In case you are wondering as to whether I have been living in a cave or completely insensitive of this nations' mistreatment of black citizens, I would like it to be known that I am a liberal Democrat. The history of the mistreatment of blacks in American history is a long, sorry story, and I am not going to ignore it, let alone deny it. Unfortunately, Moore does not discuss the cycle of addiction & crime that is epidemic in urban America; nor does he speak about the cult of violence & misogyny that is celebrated by manifestations of contemporary black culture like gangsta rap. I think that discussing issues like these in a constructive way is infinitely preferable to the sort of cheap tactics Moore has chosen. In short, we all have a shared responsibility in overcoming the problem of racism in this country, and making lame jokes or using phrases like "Kill Whitey" is worse than useless.

Secondly, Mike proudly claims that he doesn't recycle. For someone who aligns himself with the Green Party so consistently, this is a little odd. As he states, there have been instances when recyclable materials have been added to general trash by irresponsible trash companies. He also rightly states that plastics aren't really recyclable, and that the waste is dumped in nations like India. (PLEASE limit your use of plastics.) Still, it is equally certain that recycling has made a tremendous difference. Some suggestions by Moore on how to really solve this issue would have been appreciated. Just throwing things away as before is surely the LEAST effective solution.

Last, I've worked in retail stores where I've had to (gag) clean restrooms for both women & men. Mike's opinion is that women are universally clean whereas men are universally dirty. Hey, I'm pro-choice and all for equal rights for both genders, but Moore has obviously never had to clean a public women's restroom. Unfortunately, this stupid white man has.

Summary: Hilarious and Dead On! All Americans should read!
Review: This was hilarious! I found myself laughing out loud throughout! This book is dead on in common sense! Michael Moore is a genius! Can't wait to read Dude, Where's my Country.

Summary: Bigmouth Strikes Again
Review: The now quite so famous rebellion Michael Moore has after several important and revealing documentaries and books become one of the wealthy, republican, right-wing American glitch of the guardians of America's biggest fortunes most obvious enemies. Moore's ability to disclose the facts concerning material consuming standards among American citizens and the huge differences in levels of standards of life has been shaped into a loaded weapon.

In the book "Stupid White Men" the aim is the "idiot nation" of USA, and President (which he refers to as "president" and other, more un-appropriate nick-names) George W. Bush in particular. Through an almost furious language with loads of insults and harsh accusations Moore attacks the republicans (and the democrats, too!) and their way to the white house. According to Moore, the election was a clean rip-off from Bush jr. and his staff against the American people, all the time the voting procedure was infested with all kinds of legal errors and mystical counting methods. Daddy Bush was the major driving force in helping his son to win the election, with friends everywhere and slim fingers in all of America's power structures.

Fortunately, the reader soon realizes that Moore's style of writing contests of a lot of irony and fenceless exaggerations. If he had stayed with writing a "normal", academic report from Planet Moore his book would not have been as provocative and sharp as in the existing case. It is exactly the eye for the public hypocrisy and numerous paradoxes and the strange effects of these that make "Stupid White Men" differ from the mountains of books written with the purpose of criticizing America.

The examples of important issues that have to be dealt with are many. The hidden racism amongst American people (with the sharp observation of when a male suspect always gets his skin color mentioned - if he is black), public executions and the horrible fact that USA/President Bush refuses to sign the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Children (together with the countries of Iran, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi-Arabia and Yemen - hey Mr. Bush, where the hell is Iraq?) because that will constrain them from executing juvenile prisoners, the environmental axe movements towards a more polluted earth (with eased up demands to the auto industry and power industry, two of the major contributors to President Bush' election campaign), the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, the lack of national knowledge in schools caused by the Bush administration cuts in international teaching classes (in stead, some politics proposed that the history books would be re-written so that "unfortunate" events could be erased or never learned). And so the story goes, down to the last page.

"Stupid White Men" goes up and down like a rollercoaster in quality. Sometimes it is a merely frustrated and stupid humor cry, a simple opinion, from a man in the street, in other corners it it's a fantastic and accurate account of the material plurality of present American society. At best, like in the chapter named "A Very American Coup", where Moore dissects the political world in USA and shows us the terrifying bonds and networks between the American power men, do the book exhale a superb and angry essay directed towards the riddle of "who guards the guardians". In a pedantic fashion Moore explains who is who in American politics, and who is related (in all matters) to whom. Together this creates a fascinating picture of political America that strongly weakens their legitimacy. The election was anyhow a scam, and the book do in turn report of - if all the sources are fully true - an election scandal without its like. In the end the book recovers with magnificent strength and explores the political reality in America, where an extension of the party system would hurt the democrats, the only reasonable alternative to the republicans. Moore's involvement with the politician Ralph Nader is one the hand a weakness to his neutral anger, but on the other side it is a point of departure for the action hero Michael Moore. His actions are not only words, but also actual doings in terms of technical-political work. The difficulties of the American election and party system become especially visible in this context. The parties that represent the majorities are too small to reach presidency. They are further to divided to cooperate in such an extent that it would change the election polls severely. The book is also full of statistics and numbers, facts and referents in order to prove the segregating conditions of real life, post-modern America.

The clear weakness of "Stupid White Men" is its variety of interest and relevance to society, e.g. the chapter named "The End of Men". It is funny, but not very innovative. Furthermore are the chapters of lower quality easily arrested with factual errors or doubts of these.

The strong sides of the book are several. For the first is Michael Moore an extremely important and loud voice. He is a true, wise-ass American, and lives in Manhattan right in the field of rich'ies he attacks. No one listens to the people in the middle. If you want to be heard in a giant country like USA you got to scream. And second, you got to have something to say. Michael Moore has plenty on his heart, and he does not care particularly about the aftermath of "9/11" or any other matter, as long as it does not play a crucial part in standing in his way of explaining the sad conditions of American life. And third, he can act just as populist fashion as his competitors.

This multi-facial rebellion from Flint, Michigan will never shut up, and though he may act ludicrous now and then, his will to fight against poverty, racism, political mayhem and national stupidity in the country he - believe it or not - loves very much (if it had been more like Canada) is a resource we should salute with applause.

Summary: I admire Michael Moore but the book is just OK
Review: The info in the book is great but I got tired of the humor especially because I found it "pedestrian" at times. I don't mean to sound like a snob but MY preference for this kind of material would be a little more serious in tone. You might want to check out Al Franken's book instead.

Summary: Michael Moore Sold Out
Review: I used to have respect for Michael Moore before he sold his soul by endorsing a pseudo-republican military man for president. How can someone who proclaims such loyalty to progressive causes throw his support behind a former general who was the commander of the very war Michael Moore criticized as being a "slaughter". He rightfully and harshly condemned the unilateral aggression of this country in Kosovo, but then praises and endorses the man who prosecuted it. Not only is this hypocritical, but it clearly shows that money and fame have gone to his head. He is now more concerned with supporting the Establishment candidates and could care less about whether that person has any true beliefs and convictions about core progressive causes.

Everything he says in this book now makes me think he is just feeding us with more rhetoric. He is all talk. He backs up his talk by endorsing a candidate who admits he voted for republicans ranging from Nixon to Reagan to Bush Sr. WTF?? Unless he can back up what he says with endorsements of people who are not in direct contradiction with what he claims are his core beliefs, then I have to conclude he is just milking us all for our money and patronage of his books and films at this point.

I will not buy any more of Michael Moore's works unless I am convinced he is not a fake. If he was truly anti-war, he would not endorse a general who many consider to be a war criminal when there are so many other TRUE anti-war candidates who can win! He is obviously trying to cash-in with US (the little people who buy his work) and climb the social ladder wtih THEM (the Establishment Elite who handpicks generals to run for president). Imagine if Flush Limbaugh had endorsed Arlen Specter for President in 1996! That is the equivalent, and I am sure his fans would have left him too!

MICHAEL MOORE SOLD US OUT!

Summary: Bodacious!
Review: Sure it is over the top. Sure he is an idealogue and he overstates it. No matter what one may think of the interperetations and extrapolations though, the facts brought up here remain unscathed. That is the sacry part. This is in your face satire. I also think he had either too much help or too much time on his hands writing this book. It is always good to have some brave soul shaking the establishment a little. The popularity of the book has a message of its own. Though it was written before the start of the Iraq war and the avalanche of corporate scandals, he was on target on these issues. Ironic that the publication of this book was overshadowed by 9/11, and his excellent award-winning movie "Columbine Bowling" was overshadowed by the Iraq war.

Summary: WHY WE SHOULD HAVE VOTED FOR RALPH NADER
Review: I wanted Al Gore to win! After reading 'STUPID WHITE MEN', I realized that I should have not been angry that Nader took votes from Gore. While I and Michael Moore believe that Gore shold be our president based on the vote count, this book shows us why the Florida election and the Supreme Court decided who was President. This is a must read for any undecided Democrat, Liberal, or Green Party member. Then read his next book:
"DUDE, WHERE'S MY COUNTRY!"

Summary: Starts off good, means well, but falters
Review: Several weeks ago, I created a list for Amazon on the best and worst of Michael Moore. He's done some great work and I agree with him most of the time, but this book is just poorly written.

Moore starts off by raising some excellent points with a great critique of W.'s administration. What ruined the book for me was when he started reminding men to lift up the toilet seats and not use the bar of soap to get themselves "extra clean." Those lines are for second-rate comics, not social commentators with Moore's great satirical skills.

The shame of it is that Moore has done some excellent work - "The Awful Truth," "TV Nation," "Roger and Me," and (up until the end when he sells out his thesis for good cinema) "Bowling for Columbine." His lesser work, however, makes it harder to defend him when arguing with his detractors. It also makes it look like he's cashing in (in some parts it seems as if he wrote "Stupid White Men" in about a week).

Interestingly enough, as I was about to write this review, I came across this quote from the Dec. 30, 2003 issue of The Economist:

By contrast, Mr Moore's satiric skills seem to have decreased in direct proportion to his fame: the wit of "Roger & Me", which skewered General Motors, has given way to "Woo Hoo! I Got Me a Tax Cut!"

The corollary, which bears mentioning, is that his skills have decreased in direct proportion to the size of his target. When attacking corporations, his work was excellent. As he started taking on America at large, however, he has lost credibility. I feel he needs an editor; someone to rein him in and tell him when he needs more evidence or his thoughts just don't make sense.

That being said, I haven't - and won't - read "Dude, Where's My Country." Most of the reviews I've read about it describe it as self-aggrandizing with bumper sticker solutions to America's problems. Based on "Stupid White Men," that doesn't surprise me.

In sum, the beginning of this work is worth reading, but you could put it down after the first 50 pages or so and miss nothing. Much as conservatives will rip my review for saying that I agree with most of Moore's ideas, Moore fans will probably slam my review for not giving this book a glowing review. But I bet they realize his books fail to live up to his TV programs ad movies - especially this one.
