Rating: Summary: Sad but True Review: Stupid White Men is a book most of us think about but don't have the courage to write. It's funny, sad, some of it was an "AHA" for me. Much of the content in this book I have observed in my life. His comments on environmental issues hit a chord because it is high time we recognize that we are destroying the earth and the environment. Alot I am sure, many of us have never considered. Just our basic greediness....bigger and BIGGER houses and SUVs which eat up our resources. This is a book that will make you think and help you too see things beyond just ourselves...next time you buy gas for your car, think of the MTBEs that can potentially destroy the water supply. Buy 76 gas...more expensive but less toxic to the planet. Mr. Moore makes good points which some may find offensive, but have an open mind and learn from it and develop and more conscious way of thinking and doing things. Wake Up!
Rating: Summary: Open and thought-provoking Review: This book is strongly negative. However, it's also pretty accurate - there's a lot to be negative about. Denouncing this book simply because it bears bad news is shooting the messenger. Michael Moore isn't one of the world's great intellectuals. This means the prose style isn't up to much, and that's my main criticism of the book. But that's OK - I prefer a clear thinker who's a mediocre writer to a superb writer who lacks insight. The value in this book is that it clarifies what some of the problems are, in language that almost anyone can understand. For democracy to work properly, the person who gets the votes has to win, and the people have to be sufficiently well informed to vote prudently. The book makes a good case that neither of these is currently happening in the USA. I've seen Michael Moore accused of hypocrisy many times for this book, which is unfair. Firstly, people claim he's just whingeing, rather than doing anything. When a democrat (note the small 'd') wishes to do something about the political system in a democratic country, what alternative is there? He thinks people ought to think and vote differently - creating books, films and television programs is exactly the right way to make that happen. Secondly, he is accused of enjoying the benefits of the system he wants to destroy. Perhaps he is - I don't think he claims to be any kind of angel. However, a lot of the time he's using the system to beat the system, especially the media circus surrounding big industry and mainstream politics. Other times, his complaint is that not everyone has the things that he has and enjoys. Such as a vote that got counted. Most importantly of all, this is a transparently open, direct and honest book. If you don't approve of the rambling style, at least reassure yourself that it plainly isn't a carefully-structured argument in favour of some hidden agenda. Moore wears his heart on his sleeve, and that alone is rare and makes the book worth reading.
Rating: Summary: Rated at 1 Star because you don't offer a "ZERO" option! Review: Big Zero sums it up another White guy who wants to ride the coat tails of the minoroity minds and celeb has-beens in defaming the President and this nation...
Rating: Summary: I'm not Stupid! Review: To tell you the truth, I found this a bit of a disappointment. I really liked Bowling for Columbine but this comes off as a bit preachy. Moore tends to treat the reader as a child. We read too Mike and we have the ability to form our own opinions. He means well and the book does have good points. It is even entertaining in some bits. But he does contradict himself alot and also seems to need some kind of validation by the reader. Don't get me wrong, I think this guy has an important part in the greater scheme of things. It's just that the book is a bit unfunny, simplistic and a bit boring in some parts. He also tries to represent liberal minded people who aren't much like him. When he stops preaching and starts treating the reader like an equal, I'll be there. Borrow it from the library.
Rating: Summary: Great Text Book about the USA Review: I'm a Japanese student - 12th grade. I just started getting interested in politics around the world. My sister recommended me this book, and I soon found it very insightful. At the same time, this book was shocking enough to let me know "America is not a dream land." I realized when I finished this book that my positive image of the USA had been false. You know, I had been looking at the USA as a wonderful country with variety of cultural things and colorful people.... Those, however, seem only shallow. I learned truth about the USA from Michael Moore. We cannot learn those inside stories about a country from the major newspapers or TV networks here. The media is always on the government side, right? Mr. Moore did a great job. I believe a lot of Japanese students should read this book to learn real America. There is a Japanese translated version of this book, if you don't read English.
Rating: Summary: Always a critic, never a solution Review: This book shows the deep rooted psychosis that Michael Moore and many other liberals like him exhibit. He's an eternal critic but does not have any constructive suggestions for a model in which things could be better. Maybe we should follow a model like Cuba or North Korea, would that be better Mr. Moore? Michael Moore has become one of the richest men in the world with his books and movies. He obviously feels so guilty about this that he tries to bring down all white men with him. Well, it's not white men who are bringing the world down. In fact, over 90% of the inventions that we enjoy today were made by white men, that's not racist, it's just a fact. The USA - the country with the most freedom, the most mix of races, where anyone practice whatever religion they want - was founded by white men. I'm sorry, but I don't apologize for being a white man and I don't feel guilty, like Mr. Moore appearantly does.
Rating: Summary: It Just Goes To Show Review: Great Book. Well worth the read ... especially if you want proof positive that there is nothing quite as capitalistic as an avowed socialist, and nobody quite as closed minded as one who claims openmindedness. Really ... I enjoyed this, I just wouldn't want Mr Moore to ever be responsible for the guarantee of my civil rights. He'd get mad because his new Beetle wouldn't start and do away with them.
Rating: Summary: A great beginning Review: No, this book isn't exactly the ultimate treatise on these matters (corporate crime, political crime, etc.) However, if you want to begin to understand what is wrong with this country, this is a great place to start. This book is perfect for people who think everything is still hunky dory in this country. It's funny, insightful, and bound to open some eyes. After this book, there are more serious, more comprehensive treatments on these matters. But none of them are nearly as funny. And there are benefits to this book one can't get from erudite, academic material. This book is more like a gut reaction: how would the average American feel if he found out about the stuff that goes on in this country? Yes, this book is emotional, perhaps not always as empirical as others. But why must all nonfiction be bled of humanity? Why should nonfiction read as if it were put together by technicians in labcoats? This stuff is disturbing, and it only adds to the book that Moore doesn't hide his own feelings from the reader. And, if you insist on more clinical, sterile fare, there is plenty of that too, and lots of it worth reading. This book is human, honest, and funny. Give this book to someone you know who has his head buried in the sand. You know, one of those people who, when asked who they voted for, says "I don't follow politics," and looks away. Give this book to that person in your life, the person who is so overwhelmed my the miasma of corruption and degredation that he has become apathetic. I hope this book will get more people re-convinced that this country is worth saving, ad that they still have the power to help save it. And, to those of us who are already aware of this stuff, it's still a great read. I can't think of any stronger endorsement of it than how virulently the conservatives are decrying it. I mean, over 400 reviews for this book on this site and at least one out of five is a conservative tripping over himself to deny the sad facts in this book by offering childish, insulting comments; these desperate attempts to discredit this book are powerful and undeniable proof of its effectiveness.
Rating: Summary: racist , sexist book Review: If Moore disagrees with government policy, he should be intelligent and say what he disagrees with and why. But he is a hyprocrite who claims to detest racism and sexism, but is guilty of it in relying on race and gender for his insults (white men). If he checked his stupid anger, he'd see our administration had Karen Hughes, Condi Rice, Colin Powell -- not all white or all men. He is a lowbrow, hate-filled rabble-rouser in need of a kick in the butt.
Rating: Summary: What a rascal! Review: What a rascal! Michael Moore's sense of humor makes the painful reality of our current political mess easier to understand. A relentless seeker of the truth, Moore lambasts Bush... This satiric vision of American politics is a treasure. Though he is not writing fiction in the tradition of Heller or Twain, his grasp of our irony is amazing. A number of wonderful new writers have rediscovered this important genre. For example, just to name a few, John Orozco's "Delano" strikes hard at hollow institutions and double standards of our society. So does Lenny Castellaneta's "No One's Even Bleeding." I highly recommend "Stupid White Men..." and all the new satirists to anyone who wants to laugh at our follies.
