Summary: Stupid White Man - Michael Moore
Review: I bought this book the day it came out with great anticipation. After enjoying some of Moore's work and seeing an interview with him on the tonight show that seemed to promise a tome replete with facts about the powers that be and numerous sources for said facts, I was expecting a wonderful read.

What I received was a book that was full of a whining Moore standing on a soapbox and preaching like a hellfire-and-damnation fundamentalist preacher with no sources to support his claims. This kind of grandstanding hurts the liberal cause and just makes us all look like fools. If Moore cannot do a better job of stating his case and backing it up, then he should leave well enough alone.

Summary: Turn off the tube and get informed.
Review: Stupid White Men is the most important work of nonfiction since All the President's Men. How did we all become so complacent? The 2000 election began and ended with major criminal conspiracies, after which we made a little noise, but ultimately did absolutely nothing. And that's just chapter one. Don't consider yourself informed until you've read this book. The negative reviews prove the old saying that the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he doesn't exist.

Summary: A parade of half truths and outright lies
Review: As a discerning reader I took a turn through "Stupid White Men..." and at first glance this was a very entertaining and scathing account. However Michael Moore "research" and "facts" do not exactly match up with the truth. For example he refers to the "$250 billion the Pentagon plans to spend in 2001 to build 2800 new Joint Strike Fighter planes" and states that "the proposed increase in monies for the Pentagon over the next four years is $1.6 trillion." To back this up, he refers to the Web site of the peace activist group Council for a Livable World. CLW's own analysis of the 2001 budget, however, shows that $250 billion is the total multiyear cost of the Joint Strike Fighter program, not the amount spent in one year. $1.6 trillion, meanwhile, was the total amount of money requested by the Pentagon at the time for 2001-2005. It covers five years, not four, and is a total budget request, not a "proposed increase" over previously requested budget levels. It shouldn't even take this much research, however, to determine that out of the total defense budget request of $305.4 billion in 2001, $250 billion was never intended to go toward one type of plane, nor that an increase of $400 billion per year in military spending was never proposed. In a blatant misrepresentation, he states: "We're number one in budget deficit (as a percentage of GDP)." When Moore wrote his book last year, the United States was running a budget surplus, as it had for the previous three years. He lambasts Democrats and Republicans with equal vigor and equally false facts. Moore is either lazy or intentionally misleading, either way this book was a waste of my time and I would hate to see anyone else waste theirs. Especially when his "facts" are closer to "fiction"

Summary: Finally someone speaks the truth...
Review: The Best...Finally the truth comes out. Very informative I saw Michael Moore speak. He is very passionate on what he believes. He is just trying to help people know the real truth. And help others understand...Thanks Michael,

Jeane

Summary: Something to think about
Review: This book presents material from a very unique perspective, and makes one to think about where we are headed as a nation. It puts democratic and republicans in similar category, which is increasingly receding from national sentiments and values. If you don't have heart to take critisicm, then don't bother reading it. One thing I learned is not to blame Ralph Nader for Al Gore's demise in 2000 elections. I believe Michael Moore's justification is appropriate. Pain killers are not supposed to taste good. Thank you Michael and may God bless you. I wish I could give you more than 5 stars.

Summary: A really courageous book
Review: I think that Michael Moore takes the courage to write what he thinks- and he is not the only one!- are the worst problems in the USA today. Of course, he wrote before this unilateral war in Irak, so there is a chapter missing in the book. Maybe will there be a next book to show us all what we know: the current US gouvernement is doing everything it can to piss off the world! Good job

Summary: Read the book before you review, then refute the facts
Review: Amazing how many negative reviews for this book came after the Oscars. This space is to review his book, it might help if you read the thing before you "review" it.

To those that say he does not hold Clinton responsible for anything, please reread chapter 10. He is clearly a liberal but definitely not a Democrat.

To those that dispute his factual accuracy, please disprove those points you doubt instead of just saying his facts are incorrect. I personally would love to know where he is inaccurate. The notes in the back are pretty thoroughly sourced for the facts he quotes. Still, those sources may also be bias, prove it (citing equally bias sources does nothing to "prove" your point-i.e. O'Reily, Rush, Hannity, Coulter).

As for the entertainment value of the book, it is not his best stuff. "Downsize This" was much more entertaining. If you do not enjoy his style of humor you will certainly not enjoy this book. Secondly, the book is rather short. I would recommend waiting for the paperback or buy it used. Not so much a critique of the content as a dollar value concern. Your money would be better spent on viewing Bowling For Columbine.

Summary: Over rated
Review: There were only a few notable areas which were very informative, overall the text is palaver--filled with ramblings about himself and other meaningless additions that take away from his credibility. It's easy to be a critic, it's harder to maintain a credible image as a critic people look to for insight.

Summary: Moore asks his citizens worthy questions...
Review: There are certainly books out there with a greater depth in terms of political analysis, greater coherence (Moore does tend to jump about from topic to topic), and there are political books with much greater academic credibility. And some people may even read this book and think the humour is childish.

So why am I giving this book such a high rating? Is it because I simply agree with Moore's political views? Some I do, but certainly not all, and some I disagree with strongly. And for the record, I'm not anti-American (I'm British born and bred) or looking to endorse any anti-American view that comes along (not that I think this book is anti-American anyway).

Although Moore's evidence and examples are selective, that does not bother me. What political writer is not selective or opinionated for that matter? Almost by definition, they all are. Every field has contrary evidence, and politics is no different. But at some point a writer will take a view and present their (selected) evidence.

Moore is a passionate citizen. He is passionate about democracy and preserving it in the true sense of the word. He is passionate about social justice, economic justice, and he is passionate about the welfare of his fellow citizens. He doesn't claim to be an academic and he doesn't pretend to have written an academic text.

Moore, through this book, asks questions. He asks why a CEO and other executives have nearly all charges dropped against them for hiding pollution which could cause cancer to thousands (after the executives admit guilt), while a man is given a life sentence for stealing because it's his third (minor) offence. He takes politicians at their word and questions them when their actions don't remotely match what they say. He asks why politicians will not respect the elections in Venezuela and then talk about the importance of democracy abroad. He asks why the US government has gone to war to reinstate non-democratic governments.

Moore embodies the qualities of a good citizen, and his sin is to believe that in order to be a good citizen, you have to question hard what you see around you and speak loudly when you think something is wrong. If he gets called anti-American for that, so be it. But any country should be proud to have individuals like Moore bringing to the public spirited opinions, openness, some well researched arguments (anyone who argues with the level of his research, should just spend a few minutes looking through the 'notes and sources' section at the back) and, for me anyway, entertainment.

Congratulations Moore.

Summary: I'd Vote For Him...
Review: Yes, the writing style may be a little bit repetitive, but to anyone interested in politics on either side of the spectrum, it's a riot of a book. And, to anyone who is amazed that something like this would be printed in America, just brush off the dust on the Bill of Rights. It's right above your beloved 2nd Amendment. Moore isn't the world's best writer, but at least he has the balls to make fun of anyone to the right of Stalin. I'm not a Commie, but do read this book. You may find it as a waste of time, but then apparently your sense of humor needs refining.
