Rating: Summary: Didn't Do It For Me Review: I had great expectations for this novel, as I've become a dedicated Deaver fan and will read anything he writes... this, however, was a let-down... it didn't reflect the skill he's developed over the years... I can't wait until Lincoln Rhyme returns for another exciting adventure!
Rating: Summary: Good psychological suspense Review: Tate Collier and his ex-wife Bett, are reunited to search for their missing daughter Megan, in this quite suspenseful psychological thriller. Aaron Matthews is a highly intelligent psychologist (and psycho) who can talk people into believing almost anything. The paths of Tate and Bett will soon cross with that of Matthews and we learn that something in Tate's past is the reason his daughter is missing. Filled with a few surprises and emotional situations, Deaver has written a satisfying story with some good characters. Matthews' use of language instead of tools (although tools are sometimes used) to knock his victims down, is a good change of pace. Overall, it's a good, quick entertaining read. Recommended
Rating: Summary: ANOTHER AWESOME DEAVER NOVEL! Review: I believe that Jeffery Deaver is one of the best mystery authors there is and is also one of the fastest novelist when it comes to publication. He always had about 2 new hardcover and a couple paperback novels come out each year. The good thing is, almost everyone of them are great. "Speaking In Tongues" is no exception. Tate Collier, a prosecuter, his ex-wife, Bev, and his daughter, Meagan, are going through some real hard times in their family. Meagan is a troublemaker at school. Bev is having more relationship problems and Tate is all alone. Matters get even worse when Meagan is kidnapped. Tate and Bev must come together and dig up their past to try and figure who would want to target their daughter. The killer, Aaron Matthews, holds a grudge against Tate because Tate put away his son in jail a long time ago. Now Aaron wants revenge! The novel is very interesting in the aspect that you get to be in the killers mind for half the novel, while you are with Tate and Bev the other half. I didn't like "Speaking In Tongues" as much as Jeffery Deaver's Lincoln Rhymes and Amelia Sachs novel's but trust me, this novel is definitely worth the money. Great action, suspense, and psychological terror throughtout the whole book. I can't wait for "Blue Nowhere" in May 2001! Brad Stonecipher
Rating: Summary: Heart-stopping! Review: Just when you think you have the story figured out, Deaver throws you yet another curve. I've never been able to guess the ending of a Deaver book and Speaking in Tongues was no exception. I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: I felt cheated.... Review: Having been a Jeffery Deaver fan for several years now, I was looking forward to his "new" suspense novel. I thought, how prolific, he also released The Empty Chair this year. After reading the first two chapters I had an uneasy sense of dejavu. Aha! On the copyright page, in little tiny type it said the book was previously published in Great Britain in 1995! Now I remember reading it two years ago in London! I didn't think then that it was one of Mr. Deaver's better books and I don't think so now. The characters are shallow, the plotting plods along and the plot-twists are telegraphed. Mr. Deaver is a talented writer. His writing has matured in the past five years. It is a shame that he has to dilute his reputation by allowing his publisher to release this potboiler.
Rating: Summary: Not his best but still fascinating Review: Seventeen-year-old Megan McCall is required to see a psychologist after becoming very drunk and climbing the town's water tower. When she arrives at her appointment, her usual shrink is not there. Instead subbing is Dr. Bill Peters. He maneuvers Megan into writing notes to her parents that pour out how she feels about them. He next injects her with a chemical that knocks her out. Bill places the unconscious teen in the trunk of his Mercedes before driving to an abandoned insane asylum. Dr. Bill Peters is actually Dr. Aaron Matthews, a brilliant psychiatrist seeking vengeance from Megan's father for destroying his life. Megan's parents, Brett and Tate, do not know their daughter well enough to realize that she is not at her father's home. Tate has been indifferent towards his daughter and Brett is interested in her own social life. By the time they conclude that something is wrong, they cannot persuade the police that Megan has been abducted and not a runaway. Matthews discredits anyone who intervenes otherwise. Brett and Tate turn amateur sleuths in a risky effort to rescue their daughter. Although SPEAKING IN TONGUES lacks the deep intensity of some of Jeffrey Deaver's previous novels, the story line remains an exciting thriller. The plot emphasizes why the antagonist loathes the hero to the point that he will go to extreme lengths to see his enemy suffer. The relationship between Megan's parents seems unreal and staged, but Megan's behavior provides credibility to the cast. Though not quite a Lincoln, fans will enjoy Mr. Deaver's latest work. Rating: Summary: Exceptional work! Review: I am a huge fan and could hardly wait for Speaking in Tongues to be released. I work in a bookstore and my jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw an early reading copy sitting on a desk in our stock room, it must have been lying there amid other books for 2 months before I noticed it. Needless to say I devoured the book and enjoyed it so much! The killer this time around is really rather unique (no spoiler, don't worry), he's a psychiatrist gone bad, who does not use guns or knives or anything, but just uses his speaking skills to gain peoples trust and confidence. Imagine if Patterson's Alex Cross or Kellerman's Alex Delaware turned to the darkside, then you might have an idea of what this guy is like.
Rating: Summary: Not One Of Deaver's Best Review: With his series of Licoln Rhyme novels I have quickly become a Jeffery Deaver fan. I also really enjoyed The Devil's Teardrop which did not feature the Rhyme character. Speaking In Tongues falls into this latter category. As far as I can tell it is a reissue of a novel that was actually released a few years ago and is being reisssued to capitalize on Deaver's recent surge in popularity. The premise of the book is interesting, unfortunately some of the plot points require such a suspense of reality that it detracts from the enjoyment of the book. The characters lack the dimension that Deaver usually provides and many times seem too cartoonish. Any fan of the suspense genre will not be surprised by any of the action. In other words we have seen this type of thing before and the writing is not engaging enough to make us forget it. If you are a fan of Deaver's work you will probably get some enjoyment out of this book, however I would suggest waiting for the paperback. I got to read and advance copy, but if I had paid over twenty dollars for the hard cover I know I would feel cheated.
Rating: Summary: Deaver is, quite simply, THE BEST! Review: I don't know what else to say. I've now read almost all of his books and most of his short stories and my review headline says it all. I'm running out of adjectives to describe his books. I've used the words 'awesome', 'superb', magnificent', 'greatest' and 'terrific' to death. I promise I won't use any of those words in THIS review (even though they all could be used to describe SPEAKING IN TONGUES). If you have never read Deaver (WHERE YA BEEN?), then you need to quickly order all his books and have a Deaver-thon. You will NOT be disappointed. This is my guarantee to you (take it for what its worth). Pick ANY book by Deaver and you too will be using the words I am not going to mention in this review (see above) to describe whichever book you pick. I will close this review with two words and a ton of exclamation points for Mr. Deaver. ....WRITE FASTER!
Rating: Summary: Great story with a ton of plot twists... Review: One of my favorite crime thriller authors is Jeffery Deaver, and I just recently had the chance to finish his book Speaking In Tongues. Great stuff...
Aaron Matthews, a former psychologist with a knack for talking people into things, is out to destroy the life of Tate Collier. Collier is a trial lawyer who prosecuted Matthew's son for a killing when he was a teen. A short time after the teen went into prison, he was brutally murdered. Matthews wants to take the life of Collier's teenage daughter in revenge. He does this by kidnapping the daughter after a counseling session and makes it look like a runaway. She's taken to an old abandoned mental hospital where Matthews plans on murdering her. Collier suspects that his daughter's disappearance is not what it seems, but everyone who can provide answers is either dying or being framed for other crimes. The story is a race to see if Collier can figure out who is doing all this, and to find his daughter before harm comes to her.
This is an excellent story with numerous plot twists and tight story-telling. The interaction between Collier, his ex-wife, and the daughter (who has numerous issues) provides all the necessary color to allow the characters to struggle with both family feelings and the on-going crime investigation. Definitely not a book that is easy to put down.
