Rating: Summary: Bridget Jones II Review: I'm a big fan of the Bridget Jones' books, and, to me, this is "Bridget" revisited by another author. The main character, Bridget -- oops, I mean Becky -- gets in funny scrapes, she's got a love interest very similar to the Mark Darcy character, and she's English through-and-through. A real material girl, she also mentions stores and designers that mostly Brits, I suppose, would be familiar with. If you are wishing for a third Bridget diary, here's your fix.
Rating: Summary: Buy this book! Review: This is the first novel by Sophie Kinsella that I've ever read, and it certainly won't be the last. If you enjoy author Marian Keyes, then this book will definetly be an enjoyable read. It was almost scary how much I had in common with Rebecca, and I coudln't help laughing because I know we've all been in her shoes at some point. Very entertaining and nicely written.
Rating: Summary: Like Bridget Jones? You'll love this! Review: I wanted a Bridget Jones-esque book (thanks to Amazon.com's listmania I found tons!) This one really caught my attention, since it has an eye-catching cover and title. I went out and bought it the next day! Rebbecca Bloomwood is Bridget Jones, with money troubles and a quirky roomate. It's not in diary format and there's no record of weight and/or cigarettes but you get to read some hillarious letter from her bank, which usually include her MANY excuses for not paying her bills. She tries to Make More Money, Cut Back on spending, and cook her own curries, but nothing seems to work... until she goes to her parent's house and discovers a story she REALLY wants to write about...... I've lent this to quite a few friends all ready and they all loved it!!! If you're a girl, or just a shopper, or you want a light summer read then this book is for you!!
Rating: Summary: ~Like Sex and the City, with better shoes and in London~ Review: Ok, yes, I'm ready to admit it. I, Torysmama, am addicted to British "Singleton Ficton". Now, I'm not talking "Bridget Jones" here. This is BETTER than Bridget Jones. I'm talking "roll on the floor" better than Bridget...a "fashion tatse to die for" better than Bridget. I completed this fabulous work of fiction in one sitting and laughed through the entire novel and immediately jumped on Amazon to see if the author had more...give me more, I thought, but sadly, this is her first novel. She must write another. You will not regret reading this book, in fact, you will love it. The protagonist of the story, Rebecca, is every credit card company's nightmare. Let's just say that she's never met a sale that she didn't like and she's met lots of shoes that she does! Her motto should be, "If it's on sale, then I'm really saving money!" In a time where we're all up to up eyeballs in debt, this is the book for us!
Rating: Summary: A thoroughly fun, entertaining read Review: I was prompted to buy this book by all of the good reviews that I read here, but I must admit that I didn't expect it to be quite as enjoyable as it was. While the familiar plot line is recognizable - single woman working in London, miserable in her job and love life, quirky and amusing, etc. - this book has a different approach - the heroine's life revolves around her attempts to fill the emptiness in her life with possessions and she winds up over her head in debt. She's bored with her life yet doesn't even know where to begin to change it, finally finding salvation in the most unlikely places. I don't want to belabor the plot or the quality of writing and character development (both well above average for the genre). The best aspect of this book for me was how entertaining and funny it was while containing much in it that is easy to relate to - sure, at times it stretched believability but not so far that the book itself became ridiculous. Shopaholic is a delightful distraction, well worth the investment and one of the better entries in the now-familier Bridget genre. I recommend it most highly - it's a wonderfully entertaining way to spend an afternoon.
Rating: Summary: fun read Review: I saw this book and just HAD to read it... because I myself have to confess: I'm a shopaholic. And it's actually rather scary how much Rebecca Bloomwood and I have in common. I can't refuse a sale, I've paid off credit cards with others before, etc... However, this book goes beyond the 'confessions of a shopaholic'. It's the story of a financial journalist who is obviously unhappy with her job and uses shopping as a pick-me-up. She is a woman who is very intelligent and capable but does not try very hard until something comes up that actually interests her. And then when she actually tries, she finds out that it is actually possible for her to enjoy working, and that she doesn't have to be in debt forever as long as she is not in denial. I really enjoyed reading this book, but I didn't give it 5 stars because I thought the author went just a teensy bit overboard with the shopaholic attitude sometimes. The ending was satisfying, though, and made up for that. :) All in all, I would recommend this book, as it is very amusing.
Rating: Summary: Perfect Weekend Read! Review: The first thing that grabbed my attention about this book was definitely the title. I can admit to being a shopaholic, and was ready to read about anothers misadventures involving the ever popular sport. The book was so hard to put down I was reading it for two seconds at each traffic light I came too. Sure, my fiance smirked a bit at the title, but questioned exactly what it was about. All I can say is it is a hilarious story of a writer who's "appointments" often take place in a department store checking out the latest shoes!
Rating: Summary: Becky Bloomwood is the next Bridget Jones Review: This fantastic and hysterical book is a great follow up for any Bridget Jones fanatic. Becky Bloomwood is a funny character that any recent college grad can relate to. The writing is sharp and witty and I was constantly laughing out loud when I was reading this great story! Enjoy - and tell your friends!!
Rating: Summary: Nonstop fun! Review: If you're searching for a relaxing, LIGHT read for the summer, look no further. This book is so much fun, and the pages fly by in a breeze! You couldn't ask for a better book for a trip to the beach or to accompany you on a long plane ride. Rebecca's adventures -- and the rationalizations that keep her shopping, despite the fact that, as a financial journalist, she knows better! -- are guaranteed to keep you laughing. This is another terrific British novel in the tradition of Bridget Jones et al. I'm so happy that American publishers have started bringing us more of these books by hip young UK writers. Keep 'em coming, please!
Rating: Summary: Confessions of a Shopaholic Reader! Review: This is probably one of those few cases when the expression "don't judge a book by its cover," really applies. If one considered the title of this book, he/she would most likely view it as materialistic and artifical- but it is anything but. Sophie Kinsella's novel about Rebecca Bloomwood, a miserable financial journalist is realistic and HILARIOUS!
