Rating: Summary: I prefer IPA symbols. Review: One thing I personally don't like about this book is that they use their own pronunciation keys instead of IPA symbols.
Rating: Summary: To Think It All Started 7 Years Ago With Word Smart Review: Seven years ago I was serving an evangelical mission, attempting to learn to read French and speak Haitian Creole. I began to read a very scholarly tome by James E. Talmage. I was so infuriated by my blatant inability to mentally grasp the well-written English I was reading, that I set out on a quest to dramatically improve my grasp on the English language. It was my great fortune to happenchance upon this reference tool in a book retailer at a local mall. I have implemented the simple, yet effective, methods of vocabulary expansion explained in this book. I am now equally comfortable grimacing through the latest cacophony from Eminem, as I am discussing philosophy with suits that have earned Ph.D.'s. If you're looking for a tool for self-improvement that will bring a new confidence in your verbal and written communication, then you've found the right book. The work of finding the words you *need* to know has been done for you. All that remains is for you to find creative way to put them to use for you in your daily life. May you, like me, enjoy years of quality articulation as a result of this wonderful tool!
Rating: Summary: Buy the new THIRD edition - Not the second or first edition. Review: The third edition is a huge improvement over the second edition. Some of the other reviews about being too simple are true for the second or first edition. But Princeton Review apparently learned from their first two attempts and has now produced a great book. Conflict of Interest Notification: I am the editor of Elite Word Power and my opinions of competing products may be biased.
Rating: Summary: The Princeton Review : Word Smart : How to Build a More Educ Review: These ideas of increasing my vocabulary while driving, has added a comfort in communicating....expecially as I prepare my homework papers. Wonderful Idea!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Great for SAT, GRE or TOEFL Preparation Review: This book contains 800+ words, which may not seem like a high number, but, those words will very likely appear on the GRE, SAT or TOEFL. Why? Because the testmakers test words that are commonly misused. For example, many people do not know the distinction between 'libel' (false written statements) and 'slander' (false spoken statements). Without knowing the subtle distinctions of words, you'll lose points on standardized tests which test vocabulary. Word Smart points out the commonly misused words and how those words are misused. Word Smart also provides interesting sample sentences to help you understand the context in which a word should be used, unlike the boring, somewhat useless sample sentences often found in dictionaries. If you purchase this book, do all the matching quizzes which will greatly assist your vocab memorization. Test-Preparation.net
Rating: Summary: Good discussion of the nuances. Review: This book covers about 800 SAT-level words with one-paragraph explanations and examples to signify the nuances. The prefix-root-suffix section of the book is especially useful in guessing the meaning of a word that one does not know.

Rating: Summary: propitious endorsement Review: This book has allowed me to exhibit my imperious erudition with unimpeded pedantry. I once was taciturn, but now am loquacious. D. Glib
Rating: Summary: Must Have For Test-Takers Review: This book is essential for anyone taking the SAT/GRE/GMAT/LSAT. I'm currently studying for the Law School Admissions Test, and this book has saved me from misunderstanding entire paragraphs before. There is no worse feeling come test day than coming upon a pivotal sentence and then not knowing what it means because you're drawing a blank on the meaning of the verb.
Even in day to day affairs, like watching the news or reading for pleasure, the words contained in Word Smart and Word Smart II have helped in my understanding of various issues. Clearly, if you want to participate in the "educated" community that (barely) exists in America, then Word Smart and Word Smart II are essential reading.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: This book is great for expanding your vocabulary, it gives you the words you need to know and is especially helpful if you're preparing for the SAT I
