Rating: Summary: The Golden Compass Review: Lyra is a girl at the Jordan College. She and her friends talk about monsters called Gobblers that eat children. Lyra's best friend, the kitchen boy, Roger is taken by the Gobblers. When Lyra meets her so called foster mother, Mrs.Coulter, Lyara is taken advantage of. Mrs.Coulter is the boss of the Gobblers, just she seperates the kids from their daemons. You should really read this book and The Subtle Knife, the sequal to The Golden Compass.
Rating: Summary: Book Review: The Golden Compass Review: I thoght this was a great book. I love fantasy, and this is hardcore fantasy. I read this book in 3 days (I am 13 years old, in case you'd like to know). I recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy the most remote bit. I loved the idea of having a daemon, to never be lonely is a great thing.
Rating: Summary: I don't see how this book got such high ratings Review: This book doesn't deserve 5 stars. The beginning was good, but after that, it went downhill. When i first read it in 5th grade, i had nightmares for weeks because of what they do to the children. Now that i have forced myself to reread it, i found this book disturbing in more ways than one. I realized that "Daemon" is actually an alternat spelling of demon. If that is satonic, i don't know what is. The characters were poorly drawn and not well developed. The story line had good potential, but it was ruined by Pulmans aufull writing style. The only part i liked was when Lyra used the Golden Compass. That is pretty pathetic.
Rating: Summary: Angered Review: DO NOT READ THIS BOOK! 'You gave it five stars', you might think. It is a wonderful book. In fact it is the best book I have ever read. Its sequel is almost as good (I would give that one five stars as well), then why the advice to not read it. Well I just found out that the third is not going to be released and now I am ever in the dark about the life of Laura. What happened, is she okay? What in the world is the dark matter up to? Too many questions to ask. None to be answered. So again, a marvel to all who might read it, there will be no ending. I beg of you not to read this book. It is pure addictive pleasure with no resolution. Should the publisher ever decide to release the third book, the author finish the third book (provided the reason is not that the author is dead) then jump at the chance to read it. Take a few days off from work and enjoy. I beg of you, however, do not taste the sweet words of Mr. Pullman or you too will suffer a longing that will never be satisfied.
Rating: Summary: Riveting Review: I had to read this book for required reading at school and had it finished within the day. It is a guaranteed page turner that enchants its' audience with the charm of not-so-everyday people. Phillip Pullman has a guaranteed hit on his hands!
Rating: Summary: The Golden Compass/Northern Lights Review: This is undoubtedly one of the best books I've read. It's suitable for children but I think older readers will uncover a certain delight in it that children cannot touch. Nevertheless, for any reader it will prove an intriguing and intelligent read, and if you're looking for a fantasy book this is definitely the one for you. Witty, funny and in some places absolutely horrific... brilliant!
Rating: Summary: reread Review: I highly recommend reading this fabulous book twice. It is still highly entertaining the second time, when you're not just racing to the end (a sign of excellent writing) and you'll be amazed how much of the story if told right in the beginning, only you didn't understadn the first time. I've read the Golden Compass and the Subtle Knife both twice, and I'll read them a third time before the next one comes out.
Rating: Summary: imaginative, amazing and like a modern fairy tale. Review: One of my favourite all time books. You have to read it!

Rating: Summary: breathtaking! Review: I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Golden Compass and its sequel the Subtle Knife. Philip Pullman has a writing style that is unparalled by any author I have seen in either the 80's and 90's. Having just reread John Milton's Paradise Lost, I was even more amazed how well the symbolism of His Dark Materials Trilogy worked. LMilton's epic was one of the first that came up with the theme of questioning God's Judgement, and yes the most compelling interpretation of that work is that at times the Devil himself is seen as the sympathetic and humble hero who was a victim to God's pride. Its also surprising to note, having also read the critisms Milton received a couple hundred years ago, the negative critisms of the Golden Compass are almost EXACTLY the same! The purpose of a book is to provoke thought, not to mimic a readers views! His Dark Materials trilogy does exactly that. It takes a level of maturity to really understand the work, but it does not mean it deserves to remain unpublished or banned. I personally can't wait to finish the Trilogy with the Amber Spyglass; it will be an exciting and new adventure.
