Summary: A Great Series for Adults and Kids
Review: This is a great fantasy series. It came recommended as a good series for adults who liked Harry Potter. It cleary fits the bill. A young girl passes into a parallel universe where she has a fantastic life or death adventure. In some respect the series is a morality play against state sponsored religion.

It may be bit too extreme for the deeply religious. If Harry Potter bugs you because of a percieved pro witchcraft bias you won't like these books.

Otherwise go for it! It's a ton of fun

Summary: Yes, ANOTHER emphatic review of praise...
Review: Well, chances are that not many people will read this review. There are about 550 of them, so why mine. Oh well.
This was probably the BEST book i have EVER read. (The only other possibilities would be the other books in the series and Tamora Pierce's books)Now, before all you Philip Pullman haters jump on me and rip me to shreds, I would like to say that this review is for THE GOLDEN COMPASS. If you have read the book, then you will know that this book DOES NOT HAVE NEARLY ENOUGH "ANTI-CHRISTIAN" MATERIAL TO EVEN BE CONSIDERED AS CONTROVERSIAL. For those of you who haven't read the book, I shall tell you why you should.
A basic plot summary is not possible, simply because the plot is so complex and masterfully thought out. It would be pointless for me to try to recount it all. Some reviewers have labeled Lyra as and annoying, childish, pert, vulgar brat. Well, for one thing, SHE IS A CHILD. Children are SUPPOSED to be childish. I am not going to deny that she is pert and vulgar, but this makes her all the more lovable. How many people have read about characters who are so amazingly perfect, aside from one flaw, which is the plot itself? Lyra is not one of these archetypal characters. when you read this, you will become connected to her, this highly normal, yet extraordinary, child.
I could go on forever, but I'll stop here. Please read this book. It deserves 10 times the publicity that the Harry Potter books are getting (don't get me wrong, I'm a Harry fan too). Of course, you will have to read the rest of the trilogy too, but that should be obvious. Read THE GOLDEN COMPASS. You'll be glad you did.

Summary: best book i ever read
Review: I loved this book. it is about 11-year-old orphaned Lyra who lives in Jordan College in Oxford. She lives a happy life until she hides in the wardrobe in the forbidden reclining room and learns from her uncle about Dust. Just a few weeks later, the Gobblers come to town. Later that day she attends a formal dinner and meets Mrs.Coulter, whom she loves. Then she goes on so many adventures that you think it will never end - and you don't want it to. After I read it I quickly read the other two, but they aren't as good as the first of the trilogy.

Summary: The Best Book in Ages
Review: The Golden Compass is an excellent book. It is about a girl named Lyra who lives among scholars at Oxford. One day she sneaks into the master's office and overhears talk about a strange particle called "dust". Then she goes on an exciting journey that leads her to the North. Along the way she meets armored bears, Gyptians, witches, an aeronaut and other amazing characters.

The settings are fun and cool. I especially enjoyed when they are at the palace of the armored bears. It is a very dirty and smelly palace.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy and adventure. I thought this book was a little confusing at the beginning, but it got better and better as I read more. At the end I couldn't put it down and I couldn't wait to read The Subtle Knife.

Summary: I love this book!!!
Review: This book is great! I did it as a book report book, and was immediatly hooked! Although it was very confusing at times, it made me think and I liked that.

The plot starts when Lyra (the main character, about the age of 11 or 12) learns about a mysterious substance called Dust in a room at Jordan College where she lives. She is immediatly interested. But her life gets turned around when the rumors of Gobblers start- the Gobblers are child-stealing people. One day she is terrifyed at the thought that her friend Roger has been snatched by the gobblers! She is determined to go save him until she is adopted by a beautiful and interesting women named Mrs. Coulter. But Lyra soon finds out at a cocktail partie that Mrs. Coulter is not what she seems, and runs away...

I don't want to give anything else away, but you DO find out that Lyra's parents are not who she thinks they are... Oh, yea! In between she meets gypsies and befriends an armor clad bear! This book is great, and once you finish it, you'll be itching to go out and get the sequel(s) The Subtle Knife and The mber Spyglass!!!! BUY IT!!!!!

Summary: I hate cute things
Review: When I realized that there are talking bears in this book I almost put it down. I think talking critters are generally overused and show a lack of imagination. I like the bear in this book. I love the plot. I love the main character. I bought the next 2 books.

Summary: Christian parents beware!
Review: I read all of the JK Rowling books, and have heard all the hype. I don't believe that Rowling had an agenda other than to write some good stories, but Pullman DOES have an agenda. When I read these books I was appauled at the overwhelming anti-Christian message. Pullman is anti-Christian and has openly admitted it on the web, he has also admitted that his views are clearly passed along in these books. My problem with these books is that Pullman has taken his anti-Christian agenda to children. If he has a problem with the Christian religion, take it to adults in the form of adult reading material, not to children. This is the cowards way out i.e hiding behind stories. These are good stories, but some of the most anti-Christian material that I've ever read. I urge parents to review their children's reading materials, and don't be fooled by reviews from the Library Assn. or other groups. READ the books your kids might read, be informed. These books, like The Giver, are ones the parents need to have read first.

Summary: Superb fantasy treat!
Review: Poisoned wine, child-stealing "gobblers", and a missing celestial-observing scientist, only hint at the suspense and intrigue readers will find in The Golden Compass, Book 1 in the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman. Young Lyra Belacqua, raised by the scholars of Jordan College in Oxford, discovers that Roger the kitchen boy, her playmate and friend, is missing. Propelled into action, spunky Lyra is off on a quest to find Roger and other kidnapped children. Aided by her shape-shifting daemon, Pantalaimon, and a golden "truth meter" called an alethiometer, Lyra encounters a golden monkey, a beautiful woman, witches, talking bears, dust from space, zombies, a silver guillotine, and betrayal. Fast paced action rich with believable characters and descriptive writing weave a fantasy story with great depth, one you may never forget. Young adult, as well as adult fantasy readers are in for a sophisticated treat!
