Rating: Summary: A thought-provoking piece that's not just for kids Review: I first read this book in elementary school shortly after it came out. The book was shocking and disturbing to me then. Now, the book provides a striking commentary and warning about and to modern society. In this age, when genetic and psychological manipulation does not seem far-fetched, Lowry's story depicts a world where a centrally-controlled, perfectionistic society proves that man cannot be truly happy and determine the most fundamental relationships of society. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Awesome!!!!!!! Review: I have nothing to say but, drop everything and read this book!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Halfway to 1984 Review: I am so glad that some schools require kids to read this book. I read it for the first time in 6th grade and loved it although I do have some personal problems with it. First there is no clear ending, it is highly reminescent of the "Lady or the Tiger." And I wanted Jonas to act against the community in some small rebellion, like entering into a sexual act/realitionship with Fiona. But no the wuss just ran away, and we don't even know if he got out. The writing of this book is not good, if you are looking for sharply developed prose, you need look else where. And I have noticed that some people think this book isn't appropriate for kids. I disagree about that, I think that all kids need to know that society has the potential to turn us all into unfeeling robot-like creature incapable of either pleasure or pain, each needed to expierence the other. But the god forbid the kids should have dirty thoughts. Maybe we should put them on the pills mentioned in the book.
Rating: Summary: A Source of Inspiration Review: Lois Lowry's book is both disturbing and wonderful. It makes us seriously consider our choice to make everyone the same. This book is not just for young adults. I first read it when I was 18, but it now rests as part of my perminant collection of books. It is a great book for both young and old. It can also be read in a single sitting, which is a plus, because it is hard to put down.
Rating: Summary: The Giver By Louis Lowery Review: The Giver is an unusual science fiction story, about the perfect society. Jonas is the main character, and the oldest child in his family unit. In this perfect society, each family unit can have one male and one female child. This community has a committee, who chooses your spouse, and after a few years you can apply to have children. Each child has to stay with its age group. There are ones and twos, threes and fours, until the age of 12. There is a ceremony of the twelve year olds, and they are each given their assignment/job. At the ceremony of the twelve year olds, Jonas was skipped. This was very unusual, but he was skipped for a very good reason. He was to be the new giver, the holder of all memories. I thought that the book was wonderful. It made me stop and think that our lives and lifestyles aren't that bad. It also made me think that we take little things for granted; things like color, music, making dinner, and the freedom to love. Those are things you don't notice until they are gone. I would recommend this book to someone that is looking for another world.

Rating: Summary: *The Giver* Review: When I picked up "The Giver", I couldn't put it down. In a strange way it almost relates to the society today. It's a really great book for kids in grades 6-7, but I recommend this book to anyone who has a good imagination.
Rating: Summary: extremely awesome Review: This is a very good book. It gets good about a 1/4 of the way through. I like the ending because it doesn't reveal everything. It was very great!!!
