Rating: Summary: Pretty Good-- 3.5 stars to be exact Review: I read this book about a year ago and I thought it was good. I thought it was very interesting to see what the author thought the future could be like (for instance how the married couples are assigned to each other by their interests instead of falling in love). I liked the small twist at the end and would recomend this book for people who like science ficton as well as anyone who enjoys an easy-to-read and interesting book.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book No Matter What Review: Personally I think this book is fantastic. Instead of focusing on a personality-free world, as one of the other readers might have thought, it actually shows that we need a bit of everything to keep the world going. We need war, and we need rebels. We need conflict and we need pain. We will always need change, and, like the book says, we will always need love, no matter how corny that sounds. This really is a great book, so I strongly suggest that you should read it and/or reread it.
Rating: Summary: best book ever Review: this book really makes you think about our world. Compared to Jonas', everything is "better". They are not allowed to be unique. Their community must be filled with "sameness",but when Jonas is chosed to be the new Reciever of Memory he discovers color, hapiness, and love. He then realizes how nobody else knows about emotions. But when he finds out about all the good things he also learns about hate, war, coldness and death. He and the Giver then decide that Jonas must run away and give the community all their emotions and memory back to them so they can actually feel feelings, feel love, weather, like snow, sunlight and rain, pain but also warmth and excitement. HE also finds out when people of the communtiy are "released". Jonas cannot let this happen to baby Gabriel ( a baby who had been taken care of by Jonas and his assigned "family" unit). so he then takes Gabriel out of the community , releasing everybodys emotions and memory back to them. He goes off to a journey far away from the community until they reach a familiar place that Jonas had been given a memory of by The Giver. I really enjoyed this book and if someboady reads it im sure they will like it too. What i liked most about it was that it was not for a second boring. Each chapter it gives new details and new imformation that really makes you stop and think.
Rating: Summary: This Book rocks! Review: This incredible book had me hanging on till the end! I couldn't belive the incredible twists and turns! In a society where the leaders choose everything, your spouse, your profession and your children, a boy stands out. He is the chosen one. He is going to be the most crucial part of their society. You have got to read this book! It's fantastic!
Rating: Summary: Very good! Review: When I was assigned to read this book in my literature class, I was very skeptical. My teacher kept saying, "It's kind of a sci-fi story, but it' not." So not only did I not want to read the book, I thought my teacher was a bit loony. But, for my education's sake, I forced myelf to start reading it. I had it finished 2 months ahead of when the class was scheduled to finish. It is a very good and well-written book. I enjoyed it a lot and it definitely keeps your interest, because you never know what will happen next.
Rating: Summary: This was an enhancing story Review: I did not actually READ this book. I listened to it on Cassette, but even so this book had me hanging till the end! It can be a little boring in the beginning and you have to be able to understand what is happpening in the characters world. This book gave us a little insight of what it may be like in the future. I found parts of this book a little disturbing and it sent me wondering about our world. If you read this book, be ready to ask questions and also give yourself time to figure out some what is happening. let the facts sink in. This book is a little complex, but I still loved it. [the casette was VERY good so if you do not like to read try listening to this book. I had seen this book at bookstores before but never took much intrest. Now that i listened to it i changed my mind.]
Rating: Summary: Really Good! Review: First off, this was a really good book. Second of all, I would like to get something off my chest. Why does everyone(almost)think that books with anything thougthful, serious, or bad are not appropriate for children? I'll admit that a five year old should not read this book, but what about the kids who are seven or eight and could understand this book? Should they not be able to read it just because of some disturbing things? They are the ones who need to read it so that they can stop the world from becoming that way! Now that I've done that, I'll move on to the book. This is a really great book. The author has created a whole new world, but sort of like ours. This book makes you think about our soceity, and what it has become. It makes you thankful for all the simple things, even pain and the ability to choose a job and be different from other people. There is also one other thing missing from that world. Color. It is all a colorless gray, but no one, except The Giver and The Receiver, knows any different. Get this book!
Rating: Summary: Amazing book! Review: The Giver is a great book and definitely one of my favorites. I won't bother explaining the plot because I think that has been done enough times. And this book shouldn't be scary for anyone. If it is, umm... I'll spare you the embarassment of what I'm thinking. ^^;; Don't read this book if you aren't prepared to think. It makes you ponder and appreciate all the things we have in life and how important the simple things are. However it does very briefly touch the topics of suicide and puberty, so parents might not want kids younger than 10 reading it. (But they probably wouldn't understand it anyway) The Giver is really good and if you haven't already, you should read it now!!
Rating: Summary: Superb utopia, illogical ending Review: To start off, this book was great, and I liked the touch Lowry put on the ending--keeping it open. However, the ending had its illogical points regarding heat seeking equipment and keeping cold by thinking of memories. However, the book itself was a masterpiece. Not one part was really predictable, other than the main character getting special attention, but the thought that went into creating this utopia was very impressive. This is book that gets you to think--HARD. Not many books do that. However, if you get too deep, you find flaws, and you don't enjoy it as much. I can't say that it isn't a must read, though. For a "Twilght-Zone" kind of person, this book is perfect.
Rating: Summary: Just one review more....... Review: I think there are many reasons to read this book. The story takes place in a whole new world, where everything is perfect and there are rules for everything. In the community, all choices are made by a Commitee of Elders, who decides the future of the community. I recommend reading this book to everyone, because itÂ's very interesting and itÂ's narrated from a different perception of the future, where everything is so organized and perfect that there is no liberty. A very good book.
