Rating: Summary: Extrodinary Review: This is one of the best books I have ever read. After you read it you come back to it again and to read it all over again. Lois Lowry makes you think you are there in the community watching everything happen. I would reccomend it to anyone
Rating: Summary: A surprisingly good tale... even for a kids book. Review: I find that even though The Giver was writen for a younger audience, it was very good. It shows you just how lucky you really are, in a world of freedom and choices. One of the better books I have read.
Rating: Summary: Great Book Review: This book is great for everyone with a wild imagination. I would deffinatly recomed this to everyone. I really enjoyed this book, in the story there is a place where everything is the same. Everyones dissions are made for them. How to cut your hair, when to ride a bike, and even what job you will have. The best part of the book is towards the end when Jonas is on his way to find a differet place and things start to happen to him, such as starting to see color. It really gets exciting aroud there. The begining of the book is a little slow, which gets boring, but it soon speeds up, and unusualthings start to happen. In the book Jonas is chosen to be the reciver of memories. He is lead and tought by an old man know as the Giver. Jonas comes to realize how different the world is. He can not adjust to the new things he finds, and has a hard time serviving. This book paints pictures in your mind. I would recomend The Giver to everyone.
Rating: Summary: The Book Of The Year Review: This book is one of the best books that I have ever read in my life, because of Lois Lowry's unique writing style. She leads the reader to think that things have taken a turn for the worse when unexpectedly, something good develops from the bad. This book is about a 12 year old boy named Jonas who lives in a changed world. In his world there is no crime, no pain, no cars, no color and no polution. Jonas is singled out from the other members in his community by the elders and is chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory in his community. This is the most important job in the community because the Receiver of Memory is the only person in the community that experiences pain, love and other emotions and feelings. Jonas feels increased pressure because the Last Receiver of Memory unexpectedly quit and left the community. THE GIVER has recived numerous awards among which is the 1994 NEWBERY MEDAL. This book is one of the best books I have ever read and I think it should be a part of everyone's collection.
Rating: Summary: Makes one appreciate what we have today Review: Twelve year old Jonas is chosen to be the community's Receiver of memories. His job is taking care of retaining all the messy stuff such as emotions, mistakes, pain. However, at the same time Jonas learns about ordinary things like color, snow, mountains and more. One of the most painful things he learned was what "released" meant in his society, which was death. Once Jonas realized the dark secrets behind his community he decided to free himself. Jonas set of on a journey to find the other world where feelings and color and all the other beautiful things about life exist. I personal loved this book. It made me appreciate what I have today and made me think about what it would be like living in a perfect society. While reading the book I was able to realize how depressing and dull a society like that is, but I still recommend people to read it. It will really make you think!
Rating: Summary: What does the word perfect mean to you? Review: The novel The Giver, entailed many aspects of every day life in a typical "perfect" or utopian society. While reading this novel it appeared that this society was to set in its ways. They had every aspect of a child's life written in stone before they were even born into the society. This appeared to be a little strange that all of this information would be complete before the child even existed. This is one of the many aspects that occurs in a utopian society. The novel had one main character, named Jonas that the story was based around. Jonas belonged to a family unit, this included his mother, father and his sister Lily. Each family unit only consisted of a mother, father and a son or daughter. All of this information is written out before the parents and children reach a certain age. I don't know about you but to me this doesn't seem normal. This novel is highly recommend to audiences of all ages. As you read the book you should think of all the so called normal things in our society and realize that in the utopian society these things would never be heard of. It is also a great novel to compare how other societies live, as compared to our democratic society.
Rating: Summary: An inside look at a perfect society. Review: The book The Giver explores ine if the views or alternatives of how it would be if we were to have a perfect society. In The Giver there is a socuety that has no differences. There is a committee called the committee of the elders who decide on which things should or shouldn't be held in the society to make it perfect. In the society there is no crime, pollution, pain, rape, murder, or curuption, all the things that make a society less than perfect. In turn for them to give up such horrors they also had to give up color, love, freedom, and the true happiness of achievement. A perfect society sounds exellent but to loose just a simple thing as color for a perfect society I would rather live in an imperfect society.
Rating: Summary: A society filled with diversity. Review: The novel The Giver, by Lois Lowry, made me see the differences that are contributed to each society. This book showed how a young boy grows up in a society where there was no crime, hate, or violence. At certain ages, children were given gifts that represented how old they were. Some received bikes while others received ribbons for their hair. No one was jealous of one another. Everyone was equal. As time passed on, the young boy, Jonas, was given the job of the Giver. He could see and feel things that no one else in his society could acquire. Colors, textures, pain and happiness were among the many items Jonas gained throughout his session with the original Giver. As I read this book, my thoughts allowed me to see how different my society is compared to Jonas's. Living in a society where everyone is equal affected my understanding of how differently people live. This book should be read with the idea that everyone has different ways of surviving in the world. Personally, I would like to witness less crime and hate towards people in my society. The Giver will show the reader the many differences societies have in the world.
Rating: Summary: Utopia vs. Reality Review: If anyone ever needed proof that the society we live in is not as bad as it seems they should read The Giver. The problems we have to deal with such as crime, starvation, and war are insignificant to the problems that face the utopian society of The Giver. In this so-called perfect society everyone is the same they all have the same homes and the same amount of belongings but, they don't have memories and they all do what the leaders of their society tell them to. The people within in this community act like robots they do what they are told and they never question why things are they way they are. How could anyone exist without the basic human rights that we take for granted? It is so true that you don't know what you have until it's gone because after reading The Giver I came to realize all that I do have that I take for granted. For example, can you imagine a life without color or going through your life without a memory? I know that our society does have some serious problems but, The Giver shows you that things could definitely be a lot worse.
Rating: Summary: A must read book on a perfect society! Review: The Giver would be a great book to read if you wanted to get a sense of what it would be like to live in a perfect society and compare it to how our society is today. Jonas, the main character of the story, lives in a community where everyone is presumed to be perfect and no freedom of expression was allowed. These people had no understanding of how it would be to feel love, pain, or happiness. This community was controlled and assigned by a group of elders. This has reflected on our society today since now we have the media and politicians trying to govern our lives. We have laws to obey, and yes we may decide to act on illegal actions, yet there are always consequences that we have to face. We might not realize this but this has reflected and exists in our society today.
