Summary: Make it Happen
Review: This book surprised me as I thought it would be something other than it was. I loved what it turned out to be even if it was not what I expected! The journalling was a great tool and it ties in with a class we will be having for another book as well as a class on Divine Design. It is a great primer for the topic. Also look into her newer book that is just being released in hardback. It is a sequel to this book. Collect them both; they are worth it!

Summary: Changed my life
Review: I bought this book maybe 11 years ago. I'm drawn to books of this nature and I like journaling and introspection. But I don't think I've ever had the results I got from following this program.

In a nutshell, she asks that you write 3 pages longhand every morning, and take yourself out for something special once every week (artist dates). There are also weekly writing exercises and projects to do: "List 5 things you are not allowed to do. Now, do those things on paper: act it out, paint it, collage it, dance it", or, "If you had 5 other lives to lead, what would you do in each of them?", or, "List 5 favorite foods from your childhood. Buy yourself one of them this week".

It's a lot to keep track of, (especially the morning pages when you hate waking up in the mornings). But, it really did something. The combination of all these things made a difference in my life. At the time I did this program, I was completely lost. I had just moved to Bryce Canyon, Utah to get away from everybody I knew and to "find myself" (blech--hate that expression). I was all alone, working in the lodge, hiking, and reading. Then, I started playing piano again, which I hadn't tinkered with in years. There was a rec room in the employee dorms where I practiced. Then, someone heard me and asked if I wanted to play in the dining room, for tips. I did! When I got back to Vegas, I started taking lessons again. Then, I started teaching piano myself. I also began trying out for plays in community theater, something I hadn't done since elementary school. I ended up going back to school and getting a teaching license. I'm now a first grade teacher for the school district, and I love my job. I also perform sketch comedy and improv comedy, and I still play piano.

I can't attest that each and every one of these things is directly due to the Artist's Way program, but being in Utah following those steps sure felt like a turning point for me. I actually wrote Julia Cameron a thank-you letter. Now, there are newsgroups and bulleting boards on the internet where you can do the program with other people and talk to them about your progress. I'm a loner so that approach wouldn't work for me, but I think it's good for certain people.

Anyway, I highly recommend this book, if you think you can make the commitment to follow her suggestions.

Summary: Highly recommended to burn!!
Review: New age mumble jumble. If you want to become more creative as a person don't read this book. You can do it by getting up off of the sofa and turning off your television. "drawing on the right side of the brain" is the only book you'll ever need for creative guidance.

Summary: Breakin Through the Blocks....
Review: This book has brought about understanding of what has been holding me back for so many years. Ms.Cameron has a sensitive insight into the dilemna of the blocked artist yearning to be free. The insight into the role of "toxic" relationships was particularily helpful.
"Synchronimity " was experienced after involving in the exercises defined by the book. Opportunities arose that had heretofore been dreamed of. If you're an artist yearning to be free, following the exercises in this book as advised will help you to take flight.

Summary: Unblock the creative block!
Review: I have just started reading the Artist's Way and I am already feeling the creative energy moving. I am a poet/musician and have been feeling blocked, scared and bored. The exercises in this book are helping me understand why I am blocked and how to move beyond it.
Don't get me wrong...it is commitment and time. You have to do the work, but you will be changed.
It is easy to read and the tasks are laid out for you. It is chapter after chapter of self-discovery, rediscovery and creativity. Buy this book....and begin your creative journey or pick up your journey where you left off. It is all worth the ride! I highly recommend it for any artist or anyone who has ever thought about pursuing an atistic life.

Summary: Just excellent
Review: Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way is not a book for people working in creative industries. It is a book for everybody.

Through a twelve-week program, you will find out what you want by doing the exercises. The "morning pages" will help you realize what you want subconsciously, the "artist's date" will fully open the doors to your creative self.

The Artist's way is a must-read book for everyone who wants to find what is looking for in life by expressing gratitude first for the good things they have.

Summary: worthless new age drivel
Review: This book is typical of the self-help genre. It's long on feel-good pop psychology and very short on real advice. The author's main advice is to write the "morning pages" which is nothing more than two full pages of random thoughts every morning. I see that she now sells a blank "workbook" to help you do that in case you aren't creative enough to buy a notebook. The morning pages might be an okay idea but she doesn't really go beyond that.

As for the author, she claims she can help you get unblocked if you're a writer but she only lists one real writing credit, a screenplay for a movie that no one has heard of...
