Rating: Summary: The first intimate self- help book Review: The first intimate self- help book I found; gently written by an artist with integrity who documents what she herself experienced; thorough guide suggesting practical steps to get in touch with your inner core; "aligning yourself with the higher power" is an expression which appealed to me.
Rating: Summary: Very disapointed by constant reference to "God/Spirit, etc". Review: The book was full of wonderful wisdom and motivational exercises for artists and wannabes, however, the constant use of the "God,creator, higher power, etc." reference made it difficult for me to concentrate on the book and to hear and digest the wisdom in the book. I've tried twice to read the book but havn't been able to get past the religous aspect. I guess I misunderstood Ms. Camron's use of the word "spirituality". I think it's a shame that this book can only be enjoyed by those who share Ms. Cameron's belief system.
Rating: Summary: Insightful book -- best when done with a small group Review: My group of three is just completing The Artist's Way and it's interesting to note that we are all taking away something different from the experience. A dying marriage has been resurrected, career clarity came to another, and I'm simply feeling empowered to be WHOLE/HOLY. Although we just spent three months on the process, I plan to start over again immediately by myself, taking time to complete every task. If you're looking for direction and are WILLING TO WORK at it (no pat answers here...) this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: The Artists Way opens the door to creativity. Review: --------------------------------------------------Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way is more than mere chicken soup for the creative soul, it's the whole bird! As artists, we often catch the sideways glances from folks whose creative spirit is choked off by life's strangle-hold -- a hold that dictates what being "adult" is all about. Cameron's 12 weekly steps return us to the path the Creator set for us when we were gifted with our creative spark. Active artists in any medium or those frozen on the sidelines will see themselves and life's new direction in every passion-driven chapter. We were born to create. Cameron helps open the door.
Rating: Summary: Great book--A wonderful aid through difficult times Review: This book literally helped to save my life. It helped me find the ability within myself to get out of negative situations in a positive manner. Two years later, I still live by many of the principles, and I still write my morning pages!
Rating: Summary: This is one of the most important books you will ever own! Review: "The Artist's Way" went beyond increasing my creativity, this book has changed the way I live my life. I have a successful career, loving relationships, yet, I still craved more from life. This book led the way. By working through this book I have discovered what I "really" want from life and separated this from what I "thought" I wanted from life. Julia Cameron's exercises are simple, yet revealing...you will be AMAZED how quickly the results come and the quality of your results! By reading "The Artist's Way" and diligently doing the exercises, I have become more fulfilled, energized, complete...and, yes, more creative. I only wish I had bought this book sooner!
Rating: Summary: Every chapter of this book challenges your mind and spirit. Review: The first challenge in getting the most out of this book is writing morning pages faithfully. You'll find yourself looking for small journals to write in because it's easier to fill the 3 pages. When you feel stuck, write "I feel stuck" over and over again, soon you'll be writing so fast it will be hard to stop. As you progress through the book, you'll realize how much impact all the little things in life have on you. When Julia askes you to take some leaps of faith in trusting her, do it. She knows what she is doing. I went through this book with about eight friends. We met once a week for 12 weeks. It really helped! We are going to do Julia'a new book this October.
Rating: Summary: Give your life the gift of YOU!! Review: At the time of this review I am completing week 8. And I am clearly not the same person I was at week 1! Actually, when I bought the book months ago, I discovered through a process of reading out loud that there is not a page in this book that doesn't push buttons. Yet, without having experieced it physically due to reading aloud, I would not have caught that so early. And that little personal exercise opened doors in my life - I became unstuck immediately! It was a few months later when I joined a friend in doing the program and checking in weekly. My suggestion to anyone considering doing it alone, please find someone like minded to join you - to validate all the myriad of issues, feelings, and false identities you will experience. And know that you will get out of it what you put into it. One could simply read the book and gain from it. One could read the book and do the tasks intellectually, and gain from it. But the one who takes it all in and applies themselves wholly (mind, body and spirit) will forever change themselves, their lives. For me personally, my true self or Divine self has emerged through this process and I am more fully present in the journey of life. For this gift of me, I thank God for working through Julia.
Rating: Summary: Another link forged in the chain of creativity Review: The old, standardized, education process in the United States is designed to remove originality and creativity from children and to forge agreeable, go-along, get-along adults. Ms. Cameron's book, The Artist's Way, helps us to break down the barriers built over time to reach our own creativity. I'm so glad that I found, read, and practiced the ideas from this book. It has given me a heightened sense of self-worth, and a new sense of my own creativity.
Rating: Summary: if you don't want change in your life, avoid this book Review: Loosely based on a 12-step program, Cameron's 12-week workbook program for unleashing creativity is a dynamic tool for life change, whether the participant-reader is in THE "change of life" or A change of life. Each week's work includes beautifully written, thought-provoking text, as well as a series of exercises to bring home the point of the week's "lesson." Cameron designed the program for blocked artists, but anyone who will take the time to follow her text and work through a sampling of the weekly tasks will benefit, even those who protest they are not "creative." Without writing a poem or painting a canvas--or any of the other activities commonly considered creative--we are nonetheless the creators of our own lives. Anyone determined to avoid change should, at all cost, avoid this book.
