Summary: Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry Review
Review: I give this book which is about a black family named the Logans a three star rating because although I feel that it is a good book, it had some major faults. The reason I say this is because the book had a very solid plot but, there were some rough patchs that I had ( especially the beginning) which I really had to work through. The story is about an African-American family who lived in the south and had to deal with many discriminating issues.
The Logan's live in a sheltered black community, so when Cassie , Stacey, Christopher John, and little man find what blacks are really treated like, they were astonished and couldn't believe the cruelty that blacks faced just because of the color of their skin. The story is done in a first person point of view and nine year old Cassie is telling the story as she is grown up and educated.
This is a book that I would definitely recommend to others because it really educates you about what life was like in the 1930's in the south. Even if you know all about civil rights I still suggest you read this enriching and suspenseful book. The rough patches in the beginning are definitely something you can work through, and you will be glad you did . If you have already read this book there is a sequel called "Let the Circle be Unbroken".

Review: I rate this book as a 4 star beacuse i like how the took the time to describe things that were hard to picture in your head. This book is like the book freedom crossing which is another book about about poorly treated African Americans.I also like how they took the time to go through not only the tough times in their lives but their schooling and life at home on the farm.

Also how about how when father got shot everyone in the family pitched in and help him get better and get the work done at home.I like when they went through the steps about how different things heppend. Also how when they went places they didn't say much and parked near teh back to stay out of trouble.also when they discribed how people faced and treated the African Americans. Also how they got whiped and beaten for disobaying there elders.

Review: I'm writing this review on the book called Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry. I really don't understand the title. I can't tell you anything about what it means because it would be a "spoiler" and give it away! I sort of liked this book and disliked it. I liked it because it has a good story line and I like uncle hammer because he's a pyscho. I also disliked the book because it had alot of of unneeded parts. I suggest this book for anyone who likes a book about black history of something like that. I go to sum this up so this book is a good book if you have free time on your hand.

Summary: Cody's review for Mrs.Darraghs class
Review: This book is about some African American family that live in a very racist town and white people make them pay more for products and treat them like they are trash and don't deserve to live there. They go through the harsh times and the good times.

I think that this is a very fine piece of writing for a pretty old book. I also think that the plot is very good. The story about the young children and TJ make a good story. It brings you through the bad and good parts of this brief two year blimp of their life.

I think that this book has earned its title as a Newbury Honor Book. I would reccomend this book to anyone that just wants to read a very good book. It has action and drama. The part's in the story with there Uncle Hammer really shows how "tight" the family is and how they would give up anything for anyone in there family.

The Watsons Go To Birmingham is also a good book about a middle 1900's black family on a trip to Birmingham.

Summary: Matt's Review...
Review: "Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry" is an interesting book written by Mildred D. Taylor. Set back in the 1930's. The main characters (a black, poor family) are struggling to keep their land and house. Their sharecropper (rich white man) is trying to protect his land and their house. There's always talk about the KKK and other racusts groups throuought the town. The family goes up to a local town "Strawberry" every weekend to get food, supplies and go to the bank to talk to their lawyer.

Half way through the book we see signs of racism at the kids school, the mother is fired and the dad is as well. Uncle Hammer, their rich uncle, comes down to help protect the family and lend some money. He also helps doing some heavy work, because he is very strong. Sooner than expected much confusement comes over the fanmily.

Over all I give this book 3 stars out of 5 and I reccomend it to kids of the ages 12-14 who are studying American History and wish to learn about Black History. I didn't particuarely like it but the book did have a good story and context to go with it.

Summary: A Hard Lesson Learned in Survival
Review: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry tells the story of one African American family, fighting to stay together in the wake of brutal racist attacks, illness, poverty, and betrayal in the Deep South of the 1930s. Cassie Logan, who is nine, has never had reason to suspect that any white person could or would want to do her or her family harm. That all changes in one traumatic year when her community begins to be attacked by angry night riders who what nothing more that to hurt African Americans because their skin is black.

This is a powerful novel that with any hope will instill in its reader the affects of racism and predjudice. It is the winner of the Newbwey Medal for contribution to literature for children, but I feel that this is a novel that people of all ages can learn from.

Summary: Heres a REALLY good book!!!!
Review: Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry is a book about a girl and her family trying to survive in a cruel world of racism and hate in 1933 Mississippi. The girl Cassie Logan, who narrates the story, is the only daughter of her two siblings. Her mother, Mary Logan, teaches at the local school for Black children. Her father, David Logan, is away working most of the year. Her grandmother, who is David's mother known as "Big Ma", also lives with them and helps with the household and with the land. The Logans' are the only Black family who own their own land in this area of Mississippi. The land had been passed from Big Ma's parents to Big Ma and her husband. Now the land is passed to her remaining sons, David and Hammer Logan.
In a way I can relate to the Logan children. I was also teased as a child, though not nearly as severely. The Logans were treated very poorly by almost all of the white people. Cassie wanted revenge on the people who mistreated her family. She was right. Nothing living should ever be treated like her family and many other black families were treated. I would also feel like seeking revenge on the people who hurt me and hurt the people close to me. Out of all the historical books that I have read, I liked this one the most. I really enjoyed reading this book and learning about how it was for Black families in the thirties.
My favorite part of the book is the ending because it seemed like I was racing to get to the next page and see what was about to happen. It was almost as if I wasn't reading fast enough for my hands. If I could change a part of the book it would be the part about TJ. I would have had him die from the beating. Not because I didn't like his character, but just to make it a little more emotional. I would definetly recommend this book to others. I think people who enjoy learning and reading about U.S. history will enjoy this book.

Summary: Great book for middle-schoolers
Review: This is the second time that I have read Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, and it was even better this time. The characters are likable and the plot is constantly moving. There is good humor mixed with the seriousness of the events to keep reading entertaining. Everyone should read this book by the time he or she is 13.
