Summary: Great American Classic
Review: For a book with true story telling & vivid characters- you won't be dissapointed. This book approaches racisim in an un-PC way, is not maudlin and preachy but subtle and smart. The main character, Cassie, is a spunky young girl who comes to learn what racism is, yet refuses to accept that she is inferior just because she's black. The dialogue is rich, and the characters can practically walk off the page. I wouln't even consider this kids literature, since it deals with serious issues, and the observations made by Cassie and the other folks is as deep as anyhthing that could be made by an adult. This book is much better than anything by Morrisson- esp. "The Bluest Eye"- where the main character is also a young black girl but is not as interesting nor as vivid as Cassie and her family. A must read- especially for the powerful ending-"to cry for what will not pass"- that's enough to move anyone to tears.

Review: This book really opened my eyes to the racism that African-Americans had to live with in the 1930's. The book takes us into the life of a young African-American girl and the torment she had to live with. This book will bring up emotions in everyone. An excellent book!

Summary: Mildred D. Taylor is a better writer than all of us
Review: The following structural problems will NOT be found in "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry":

- Two-dimensional characters.
- A dull plot.
- An overdone story of a girl who is constantly told to act like the little lady she is.
- A book in which all people of one race are bad and all people of another race are angels.
- Simplicity.
- Poor writing.

Instead, the following is the ONLY problem a person could possibly come up with about this book:
- It's title won't immediately make little children want to read it.

And that is my only objection to the book. Kind of pitiful isn't it? I'm fairly good at ferreting out flaws in books that are widely acknowledged as superb. Newbery or not, I like changing people's perceptions of old classics. But "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry" was too much for me. I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot and pretend it doesn't have a couple small problems here and there. But it is a marvelous book. One of a kind. In fact, I highly recommend you read Taylor's, "The Well", before reading this text. Taken together the two books span the epic history of a Southern black family struggling to maintain their land. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is all I have to say about that.

Review: Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry is a great book. It is about an African American family, the Logans, living in Mississippi during the Depression. There are six members of the Logan family. Mary and David, the mother and father, and the four kids, Stacey, Cassie, Christopher John, and Little Man. They face many problems such as keeping their land, dangerous night riders, and the biggest problem being racism. This was a great book.

Summary: Carried a Lifetime
Review: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry and Let The Circle be Unbroken... I found these books so riveting as a child I bought and read them to my own children as an adult. No one has ever brought the cruel reality of human prejudice so clear as Mildred Taylor! No matter what color your skin these books will make you feel the pain of those who once really felt it.

Summary: Wonderful classroom literature for teaching the 1930s in MS
Review: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is about one family's struggle to survive during a time of extreme racial conflict and segregation. The story takes place in rurual Mississippi in the 1930s. The Logans are the central characters of the story and endure many hardships. This is the perfect literature for teaching 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders about the racial discrimination and cruelty that black families faced. A thematic unit can be made using this novel as the base for research. The 1930s is a decade that shaped the world as we know it today.

Review: Roll of Thunder,Hear My Cry
Written by Mildred .D. Taylor
Publisher: Puffin

The book I am choosing to write about is Called Roll of Thunder,Hear My Cry. The genre is realistic fiction. It is about a black family living in Mississippi during the 1930s. The family struggles through racism, deaths and trying to maintain their land that they live on during the height of the Great Depression. Many scary things happen to the family. Such as burnings, night riders, and other close encounters. All through the hard times the family managed to keep their courage, love, and pride. It is a wonderful novel and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a story of courage and hope.

The main characters are Cassie, who is the one telling the story a brave daughter of the Logan family. Stacey, Cassie's older brother considers himself the man of the family when the father is gone. David, who is the father, is often gone from home by working on the railroad. Mary and Big Ma are the mothers of the family. Mary is the mother and Big Ma is the grandmother. There are many other supporting characters

I personally love this book . I highly recommend it to anyone. Especially African American children. To learn how hard it was for their race during that time. It is good for people of all ages. It is a story of faith, courage , hope, love and family. The family in this book are very brave. It is one of the best books I have read in quite a while.

Summary: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Review: This is a great novel and it is interesting. It is about a struggling black family living in the 1930's. It is told by Cassie Logan, a 9-year old African American girl. The book showws things that were valued at that time from family, work, food and even cars. Throughout the book you will learn jof economics and politics and also about the history of this period of time. The story is very moving and it isn't one specific type of book. It is a mixture of everything, which make a person that doesn't enjoy reading like it. I highly recommend this book so people can learn from history and understand how the new era has come about. Have a great time reading this book.
