Rating: Summary: A wonderful Book Review: This book is very good. I was required to read it for school. It is about a black family in the 1930s that has to strugle though racism and the Great Depresion. I reccomend reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Haunting Historical Fiction -- A Gem! Review: Living through The Great Depression was hard enough -- forAfrican Americans it was even harder! This book tells of life in therural South through the eyes of a 9-year old African American girl. She gives an account of what each day was like, how black people were exploited and cheated, even beaten and murdered. There were many good people, black and white, who just wanted everyone to get along, and when it really mattered they all banded together. -- This book is for mature readers who can handle difficult situations. I would highly recommend this book to any readers above the age of 10. As a teacher I have used this book in my classroom during African American History Month, but would not hesitate to introduce it any time.
Rating: Summary: Nine year old Cassie witnesses the depression era South Review: This book ( which was also made into a movie) depicts the condition of blacks during the depression in the rural south. Narrated by nine-year-old Cassie the story paints the harsh life that blacks endured during the days of depression. Cassie's family, however, is buying a piece of land instead of sharecropping. The white follks attempt to prevent the family from making the final payments. However, the family has pluck and common sense, but above all, committment to each other. Throughout the story hardships are thrown at this family, yet by never giving up, they endure in their struggles together. I enjoyed this book and learned from it, however, as a teacher in the South today, I have seen where books like this one can actually contribute to the "victim" syndrome in some people. Also, even though these attitudes were predominant before integration, there have always been white people who treated black people with respect and dignity. I have actually seen children turn on white people because of another form of prejuidice that continues to be perpetrated unjustly. We can not heal our societal wounds this way.
Rating: Summary: Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry Review: The book that I read was "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry." The author is Mildred D. Taylor. This book is about a girl named Cassie and her family. It tells about racial injustices and how the family dealt with them. The main idea was that Cassie stood up for herself and what she believed in and didn't let anybody bully her. She had a good self esteem about herself and her color. I like this story because Cassie stands up for herself and doesn't let anyone get her down. I like the author's style of writing and how I can read it and feel the way that Cassie felt. Most parts of this book is exciting and keeps you on the edge of your seat, like the fire and the fight with Lillian Jean, a local white bully. This book gives me a better understanding of how difficult and frustrating it was for many people and how hard it was to make money. It gives me some knowledge on how people solved many racial problems during the days of prejudice. In my oppinion this book should not be called "Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry," but it should be "Cassie and the days of Prejudice," because only one scene in the whole book is about the field catching on fire. The rest of the book is about how Cassie felt. In conclusion I think this book would be great for someone who enjoys a lot of action. It is a terrific book and I recommend it to the whole sixth grade.
Rating: Summary: Good Book! Review: This great book is one of the many books I have to read for my education, one of the things I had to do was: 'Write a review about this book, at Amazon.com. I think it's a clear story about how the differences between black and white people were in those days. Learning how it was for a African-American to grow up in the south. I read it twice and I'm very impressed by Mildred D. Taylor
Rating: Summary: Catching book! Review: Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is the most gripping book I have ever read. I started reading it, and within three days, I was finished. Mildred Taylor has a style of writing so unique that carries you back to the time of the story. This is a wonderful book that I would recommend to anybody.
Rating: Summary: The Struggle For Justice Is Genuine Review: Mississippi, 1933: The South was still in the grasp of racial degradation and an economic Depression. This novel, told from the perspective of a nine-year-old girl in a large family, shows the courage of that family to fight for justice. Through Cassie's eyes, we see how the family tries to mount a protest against the white company store in town; the Wallace family runs the store and they have made servere racial attacks. When Cassie's family mounts a protest by shopping in Vicksburg and thereby passing trade to another business, the Wallaces fight back, literally.Although it takes several chapters to establish rising action, when it finally does so, the pace is relentless. Read this for characterization (Mr. Morrison is fascinating). Read it for a window into the struggle of what we have had to work through in our country's history. While similar to To Kill A Mockingbird with its narrator being a young white girl, this novel is different in that it is told from the perspective of a young African-American girl.
Rating: Summary: A good book, with a few drawbacks. Review: I liked the book overall, but I found it too similar to "To Kill a Mockingbird." There was a lot of racism and prejudice, which helped out with the drama, but most of it was filled with talk. It also didn't wrap up very well. The ending was dry.
Rating: Summary: Roll of Thunder Hear my cry Review: Roll of Thunder Hear my cry is a excellent book.Considering that the narrator is only 9 years old.The book has true problems in it so that is one of the main reasons I liked the book. The book took place in all different places instead of 2 or 3 places like most books do.The book is a really good book to read as a class in the middle school level, because Cassie is only 9 years old.I think people would really admire a 9 year old that can narrate a book.So I rate the book a four because it is a really good book.In the book Cassie has a way to get her problems worked out,in a good way
Rating: Summary: A Great Book! Review: I really loved this book! I read it in 5th grade and I had to read it again. Far from being a rather dry historical account, it was a very appealing novel of a black family in the South. The Great Depression is going on, and Cassie Logan's family must struggle against prejudice and injustice to hold onto their land and each other. This is a very compelling read, making you want to reach out and take care of all the characters. The ending is really REALLY good, rather ironic and very powerful. I won't reveal it, but READ THIS BOOK! It is very simple and moving, but realistic and captivating. You'll love it!
