Summary: Wonderful!
Review: I think this is a very good book. When I read it in school, I learned more about what life was like back then during the Great Depression. I also have a much greater understanding of what went on back then after reading this book.

Summary: Racism against blacks
Review: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor is an inspiring and serious but painful book. As I read about a family going through a corrupt time of hatred, I was enlightened on the wrong doings of people using racism. Not only is the book about a family going through racism, but they also encounter timeless family issues that many can relate to. The main character of this inspirational book is a young teenage intelligent girl named Cassie Logan. As a black, Cassie goes through a harsh and miserable time fighting against racism. She goes through a copious and myriad amount of vile encounters with depraved whites in her school. Not only does she go through the bitterness of racism but also through the affliction of being a teenager. At the conclusion of the book the Logans must unite against racism and not letting it get the best of them even if it is separating their family. This book will definitely leave an indelible mark on whomever reads it. If you are interested in dramatic books, this is certainly a book for you. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry will leave you so shocked and appalled it will feel like your in the book.

Summary: This is a tremendous book!
Review: The best children's book is a book that would be loved by all generations. That is definitely true for this book. This book taught me what the lives of black Americans were like for seventy years and beyond after the Civil War. I think it also gives a glimpse of what led them in the direction they have gone culturally, since.

Even white readers will begin, through this book, to sort of live empathetically through what they lived -- the struggle to make ends meet in a system designed to continue to enslave them, the struggle to keep a good name while being blamed for the crimes of white men, and just what life was like for the descendants of slaves in the 1930's.

I highly recommend this book to anyone of any age who hasn't yet read it. It will captivate you. It will make you laugh, cry, and experience every emotion in between. But it will be well worth it, and you will be glad you did.

Summary: Roll of thunder hear my cry is an exellent book, you should
Review: this book is the story about cassie(she is the narrarator), a black girl in the 1930's. She struggles with segragation. She stands up to a lot of white people when others tell her not to. Lots of people tell her that she's rude and that she shouldn't argue with white people or else she will be punished but she puts that all behind her and stands up for her race. This is such a good book, you have to read it!!

Summary: A great book with real characters
Review: This book was extremely good. This book used truth and reality so well that it is the main reason why I think it won the Newberry. The truth is what makes it so good. The characters are amazingly put together. Cassie the main character is a girl growing up in the depression. Her curiosity is never ending and it gets her into trouble sometimes. Her brothers are the supporting characters and each one of them are different. T.J. a friend of theirs more or less is the oldest and has the least common sense. Because of this he gets into a huge mess at the climax of the book. The characters are so different from each other it is almost impossible not believe that they are a real community. The characters are used very well through the story. The book was one of the best books I have read and you should to if you don't you're crazy.

Summary: There is one too many of these books
Review: Being an avid reader of SF/Fantasy, I suffer the enormous restraint of having to read books assigned in school. Some are bearable, while others are just not up to par. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is full of ignorant Black children bewildered at the treatment they recieve. Gee, maybe it's because people are racist? But, of course, dipping in the inkwell, one must put the ink to good use with thought-provoking and heatfelt conversations explaining the concept of racism. I am not racist, and I think it's important that our children learn not to be as well, but I think it is hammered into their heads too much. Frankly, this book is another To Kill a Mockingbird. That was a fantastic book. This book rides on its fame. Honestly, folks. Stop raving about the Newbery award winners. These only have to be good enough that an average C student gets some meaning out of it to be awarded this. Those of higher, well... intellect, will find themselves completely bored by this rip-off of a classic novel.

Summary: Seeing the people behind the gruesome figures of apartheid.
Review: Young adult readers enter the United States during the years of the Great Depression, viewing one particular black family, the Logans, and how they manage to cope with apartheid, both in little things such as who gets to ride across an old bridge first, blacks or whites, and in more brutal ways, such as burnings.

Given the content and style of the book, it leaves a lasting impression on young adults. Moreover, to have a good grasp of the story's true magnitude, pupils need to devellop a reasonable understanding of U. S. history, specifically, the aftermath of the Civil War, the Great Depression, and apartheid in the south during this period. Yet, teachers and students who take on the challenge will be well rewarded, and pupils learn the value of even a tiny bit of courage.

As an English teacher in training I commend this book to be read by all young adults who are remotely interested in the interracial world around them.

Summary: Amazing Book. Reviewer: Amy
Review: After reading Roll of Thunder, I realized how terrible Africans were treated back then. This book was stunning, and almost a reality check to me on slavery. I realized that the author did an amazing job making people realize what went on. Also, Cassie is so well thought and you can almost picture being there with her. Mildred D. Taylor is very good at this sort of historical fiction, and I recommend this book to anyone that enjoys history.

Summary: I love this book as a Kid
Review: Mildred D. Taylor is a great author. In this book she really shows how the south was in the 1940's and 1950's and how the south was racially divided in this time of history. It shows that we as United States citizens have came along way but we still have away to go. My favorite part of this book is when they have a picnic and she describes the food at the picnic. I remember when I read this in class and it made me want to get my lunch out of my bookbag and start eating. Because the way she describes the food will make you want to be there.

Also when I read this at first I read the book with a slightly older cover. I am glad they change the cover design. It makes the book look more interesting to read. There is also a video of this book available. I saw it in AVON Catalog sometime ago. If you can check out,I would really recommend it. But, the video leaves out some parts of the book but still fun to watch.
