Rating: Summary: Great Book for Children! Review: This book is a rich and rewarding tale of a black family's struggle to survive in an environment that pushes for failure. Each character has a unique personality that brings about unity against people that want them off the land. Readers may tend to feel a sense of hopelessness due to the harsh conditions the Logan family inhabits. The triumph therefore is evident and successfully attained when the roots of survival count.Concepts that can be discussed in the classroom setting are: RACISM envelops the entire story as the Wallaces, Grangers and Simms' yearn for the Logan's vacating the land and submission to white people. FAMILY surrounds the Logans to establish unity in the face of despair. SURVIVAL is needed thus accounting for acknowledging the racism emanating from the Logan's adversaries. FRIENDSHIP is regarded and exercised as Stacey tries to help T.J. when he is accused of murder. Overall, I highly recommend this for children ages 10 and up as well as all adults.
Rating: Summary: Teaches a lesson to all ages! Review: In my language arts class, we read this book. It tells the story from a child's point of view. Me being 13, it is a lot better to hear a story from a childs point of view rather than an adults point of view because its not giving me a lecture on the lesson of the story. If it is an adults point of view it gets kinda boring if they are just rumbling on about the same thing over and over. I like this story because it shows how badly people were treated just for the color of their skin. The author expresses the feelings of the characters so thoroughly that you can picture it in your mind. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to study the civil war or just like to read a good book! Thanks Mrs. Ras for letting us read this beautiful novel!
Rating: Summary: An VERY good book! Review: This book really put an impression on me! It was one of the best childrens novels i have ever read! In my reading class we just got done reading it. I love how the author described everything and u got to know the characters so well u thought u knew them as though they were one of your close freinds. And some of them you hate and just want to get in the book and punch! One of my favorite characters was Jeremy, the white boy trying to fit in with the blacks. His charaters was one that really made me think alot. And another character i loved was Mama. This book made me think of my own family and how lucky i am to have everything i have. I saw the movie to this and i was pretty disapointed. This book showed me how bad racism really was! if u ever have the chance to read this book u should! Its really good!
Rating: Summary: Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry Review: The book "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" tells a lot about the time of the great depression and economical problems during the 1930's. In this book the author, Mildred D. Taylor, described thoroughly the racism between the whites and blacks as seen from a child's point of view. I like the point of from a child rather than an adult's point of view because it is easier to understand. When reading this book my emotions changed very frequently between anger and sorrow, when realizing how badly the blacks were treated back then and that the whites were so racist towards them. One of the most memorable moments in the story to me is when the Logan children visit Mr. Berry, a man who is badly burned by white men just because of the color of his skin. Although I have never faced the kind of discrimination that the blacks have received in this book, you can get a good idea by reading this book of this racism that existed back then, and also still exists today. This year in my American Literature class I have learned more about racism than I have ever learned. This book shows the real side of segregation and how awful it really was. I found that the plot unfolded very slowly but the character development kept my interest. This book was very well written and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I highly recommend Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor to all young readers but especially to adults who need to be taught a lesson on racism.
Rating: Summary: Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry Review: Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry is a interesting book. It talks about racism. It is depressing and happy at times. It is really good book. It is also very descriptive. The book puts you in suspense a lot. You never know what is going to happen. It is a good book for 8 years to adult. Little kids would not understand the book's story. All in all it is a good book.
Rating: Summary: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry -- Mildred Taylor's best Review: Okay first time I saw it, I thought it was going to be boring. But now I'm totally hooked to this family. The book was so interesting and funny at times. It was also kind of sad at the end but that's what made this book so exhilarating. I've read every book that Mildred Taylor have written so far and this is by far the best one she have written. So go out there and read it!
Rating: Summary: The Trials and Tribulations of Early Black Life Review: This book was very good. It is a historical fiction that proves what love and friendship can accomplish. Being black forces this family of good, honest people to feel the hatred of there fellow man. Even though it is a fiction, it made me very sad thinking that that is how things were. Wow! Next time you need a book to read consider Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry!
Rating: Summary: Roll of Thunder=okay book Review: I thought the book was boring in some ways and interesting in other ways. The chapters were long. Cassie is a young girl that always interacts with whites-rude selfish whites. Cassie and her family try to save themselves from other rude harsh comments and other things. When I read the book, there were some parts that made me want to read on. A couple, but not a lot of parts made me stop and read another book. All in all the book was okay.
Rating: Summary: Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry Review: Hi my name is Misty and I read the book Roll OF Thunder Heat My Cry. This book was about a small family that lived on a farm. They did not have enough money to pay for the farm, so there dad had to go work on the railroads all year but came home during the summer. There were a couple of kids in this book they were about my age. (12) This family was African American. The children have to walk to school because the white folks get to ride on the bus. The bus driver of the bus does not like them and he always trys to get them muddy. The kids don't like this so they come up with a evil plan to get back at the bus driver. They dig a hole in the middle of the street and the rain covers it up. So when the bus comes he sees the water and trys to go as fast as he can so the kids on the bus have fun. All of a sudden the bus is stuck and all the kids have to walk home. I thought this book was weird because i didn't get to read it all. I read it in class and i also watched the movie. My teacher didn't make us read it all because we didn't have enough time. I really didn't like this book because i didn't understand it. Thats because we skiped around in the book. so i reccomend that if you do read this book don't skip around it woun't make since.
Rating: Summary: Stephanie's Review Review: "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry" is a very good book. Cassie and her family struggle agianst racism and many other things. This book is very interesting. It keeps you thinking and wanting to read more. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read about a family sticking together during hard times. This book is good to read; it grabs your attention. After reading the first chapter of this book I was hooked. The best part of the book is when Stacey get caught with cheat notes. The notes weren't really his they were T.J's. Stacey told T.J to put them away. When T.J saw Ms Logan coming he slid the notes to Stacey and then he got caught. Then he got a whipping. He was very angry and wanted to fight T.J. So he went downt to the Wallace Store eventhough he wasn't suppose to. He got caught by Mr. Morrison and instead of Mr. Morrison telling his mom Stacey had to tell on himself. This book is very good
