Summary: UM Thoughts on ROLL OF THUNDER, HEAR MY CRY
Review: We read the book, ROLL OF THUNDER, HEAR MY CRY, by Mildred Taylor. This book, which is set during the Depression, is a story about an African-American family (in the rural south) whose love for each other and their land gives them the courage to go against southern racism. Nine years old,Cassie Logan, a member of the family, narrates the story of how her family survives poverty, brutality, and racism.
This book is very interesting, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. The beginning of the book is very descriptive, and the conversations seem real (making the book come alive). The author's style is simple for a child to read and sopisticated enough for an adult to enjoy. This book is great for all ages.

Summary: Undying Spirit
Review: The Logan Family exhibits an undying spirit to protect their land and family in a time when they were against all odds. Because this book was set in the South, we feel that we had an opportunity to put ourselves in the Logan family position. We have always learned about this fierce racism issue, but reading this book gave us a chance to actually live the moment with the Logans. We find this book appropriate for middle or upper elementary students.

Summary: Thrilling and exciting, but believable.
Review: Roll of thunder hear my cry, captures the harsh stark reality of living as a black in the depression. It takes us through the life of Cassie Logan, a lovable yet snoopy character who rings up the main part. She narates the story in a rare 1st person perspective, and so to be completly omnisiant 'over hears alot of things. It's a very sad book, and the ending is no exseption. It shows us all the prejudice and injustices that the blacks went through during the 1930's and beyond. The stark reality that 10,000's of people were lynched and burned for the colour of their skin is some thing disgusting, and is told in the book.

The book is truthful and does not with-hold anything.

All in all great book, sad ending, leaves you hanging for the next fantastic Mildred Taylor book.

Summary: ABSOLUTELY GREAT!!
Review: I believe that this is a great explanation of what it was like for a black family with there own land in 1933! It tells the things that happen to this family through the eyes of a young girl, who has a mind of her own! I would recommend this book to children and adults alike!

Summary: Straight to the Heart
Review: When I started reading this book, I immediately had to put it back down for a minute. Even the first opening pages struck a cord straight to my heart and I had to stop because the hit was so direct. As an African American girl born and raised in a southern state there were some incidents, some emotions that Ms. Taylor descibed so vividly in her book that I could feel them all over again. I had a difficult time finishing this book because of the many emotions it stirred inside me. But, needless to say it was well worth the effort. Like Cassie I too came from a large, strong, independent, and loving family and when you're surrounded by this protective shield you don't immediately see or feel the harsh realities of racism. Cassie and her brother Stacy grow up quickly and are forced to leave some of their easy-going childhood days behind them to come face to face with discrimination. They have the excellent role models of their Mother, Big Ma, their Papa, Uncle Hammer and also the devoted family friend Mr. Morrison. Through everything that transpires in this book, the family stays united and land remains in the hands of the Logan family -- not without a fight, not without a price, but then again, nothing worth having ever does.

Summary: Well-Crafted Tale Told With Skill
Review: Mildred D. Taylor's Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a beautifully told tale spoken with the fine voice of its young narrator, Cassie Logan. It is the story of the Logan family and their struggle to maintain both their small piece of land and their dignity in one tumultuous year, two things not permitted a black family in Mississippi in the early decaces of this century. The author brilliantly captures the times of which she writes but, even more important, captures the people she writes about. There are not characters here who can be simply called victims or survivors or fighters or any other single term. These are fully developed personalities, particulary the children, that speak with authentic and complicated voices and spool out a tale that is heart breaking with equal parts despair and hope. A wonderful book for children.

Summary: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Review: As I read the book Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, in my English class. I think that this is the best book that we have read have read all year long. The book at the beginning was quite funny when the kids were walking to school the first day of school, when little man walking step by step watching himself so he wouldn't get all dirty so his mom wouldn't beat him in front of everyone. The first part of the book that made me very angry was when the kid's teacher was handing out books to the two classes and little man stood up in front of the both classes and told Miss Crocker that he did not want the book she gave him because they called the black kids that used those books the "N" word. Then the teacher whipped him and when she was done whipping him his sister explained to him why he would not take the book she gave him. She also returned her book to the teacher and said I do not want my book either. At the end of the school day their teacher went to the other building to talk to Little Man s and Cassie's mother. The teacher explained the whole story to her. She then handed the two books to their mother. Little Man and Cassie's mother took a piece of paper and glued it to the cover of their books and that night when she got home she gave them back their books. The second part of this book that made me very angry was when Cassie, Stacey, and T.J went to get food with Big Momma. When Big Momma was in talking to someone the kids went across the street to a store. On the way back Cassie bumped into Lillian Jean. The white girl makes Cassie apologize to her. She made Cassie get into the street. Then the girl's dad came to find out what was going on. Then the girl's dad made Cassie apologize again. He pushed Cassie down into the street. Big Momma came to the scene and asked the girls what was going on. She made Cassie apologize again. The saddest part in this book is when T.J is killed. This book all and all makes me very mad because of how they treat blacks throughout the story. And when The kids are trying to walk to school and the bus for the white school splashes mad and water all over the kids. The story " Let the circle is unbroken" is way better then this book. In my opinion I don't know because I have never read it. Please let me know what you think of these two books.

Summary: An OK book....
Review: I read this book for English class, and I felt that it was pretty good, but not all that it could have been. I liked the plot and the conversations, but I felt that it really got boring at times. I also don't think that it was very realistic because it seems that everything had to do with the main charactors. The story never talked about what other people were doing, just what the family was doing. Some people might think that it is a good thing (not to talk about people other than the main charactors), but I think that it would have been a good way to say what was happening.
