Summary: A fast read book that's not very fast paced
Review: This book was good but certainly not one of my favorites. It reminded me very much of the cable show "Dead Like Me". It's funny, sad, exciting, and just a great Koontz Book! I'll give it 4 stars since it lacked a dog.. (though there's a cat so it's not totally pet free)..

Summary: A lovable character, a likeable story
Review: It's hard not to like "Odd Thomas", by that I mean the character himself. He's a sensitive, self-depreciating twenty-year-old who just happens to be able to see and communicate with the dead. Odd's unusual "gift" has left him with a rather heavy burden to bear; the ability to commune with victims of crime (and hopefully find their killers), as well as a knowledge of future tragedies. This foreshadowing of danger is made clear to Odd by his ability to see "bodachs", malevalent, spirit-like creatures who thrive on impending doom. Odd's quest to discover and avert an unknown disaster is well written and interesting, but I did feel the ending was somewhat rushed and underdeveloped. Odd is such a unique and likeable character however, that perhaps we could look forward to his appearance in a sequel.

Summary: Captivating - a must read !
Review: I promised myself that I would read at least 3 books over the Christmas Holidays. I had just finished The DaVinci Code (superb), when I chose Odd Thomas as my next book. I could not put this down. I am not a Dean Koontz fan in particular, I can't even remember the last of his books that I read - but I will NOT forget this one. The DaVinci Code is a hard act to follow, but this book delivered the one-two punch. Lyrical, well-written - and just a great story. I see where some reviewers have felt it was too slow - but I thought the pace was perfect for the story. It kept me on the edge of my seat - full of surprises, interesting characters, and an unhurried, but breathtaking and heartbreaking, climax.

Summary: A Good Read!
Review: I haven't read any of Dean Koontz' work in quite a while, so I can't compare Odd Thomas to any of his recent novels. The plot intrigued me. I really enjoyed this novel, and had the luxury of reading it during vacation, when I could really dedicate quality time to it.

I enjoyed the hero, Odd Thomas, and quite frankly, would like to see him as an ongoing character in future books. This would allow all of the folks of that small California town to be further developed. I want to read more about them!

The ending wasn't as I expected, which I appreciated in a way - nothing is more disappointing than figuring out how it's going to end half-way through the book. We all have made plans for our future, only to have those plans re-routed along the way. The same has happened to Odd Thomas and his friends. I would love that sequel to see how they adjust to the hands they were dealt!

I recommend that you give the book a try. It is a love story, a mystery, has supernatural effects, humor and suspense - literally something for everyone. I didn't find it to be the best novel I have ever read, nor did I feel it was nearly as bad as some of the previous reviewers suggested.

Summary: Not Recommended
Review: This is the author of such terrific books as "Watchers" and "Intensity", isn't it? My question to you Mr. Koontz is: "What happened?" Granted, this author is a genius with flowery, descriptive prose, but that seems to be the only thing he is doing in this book. I kept asking: Can we get on with the story here? The reader has to wait forever to get to the point.

It is unfortunate that such a wonderful writer seems to be losing his touch. (Maybe a new editor is needed to light a fire under him?) The characters run the gamut from being annoying (Odd Thomas himself) to downright hateful (Odd Thomas' mother). The story itself is plodding at first and then turns very unpleasant. Unfortunately, it never redeems itself.

I don't like to be so negative, but this is not an enjoyable story. Hopefully, Mr. Koontz will be a little less mean-spirited with his characters and a little more plot driven in his future books.

Summary: What's Happening To You,Dean??
Review: Okey...Here goes blasphemy...I know all you die hard Koontz fans out there will howl in protest-I Know, because I've been one of you since I first started reading Koontz back in the 60's while he was still cranking out his early Sci-Fi and Gothic stuff-but the new novel "Odd Thomas" just Doesn't match up to Koontz's usual mastery. Why not? Well, first of all, while the story Does run along keeping your interest, for Some inexplicable reason,Koontz decided to ruin it in the last 5 pages. For those of you that haven't read it yet,I wont elaborate further other than to say that I was Vastly dismayed and let down in the end by his decision to close it as he did. It was Totally unnecessary and added nothing other than major disappointment to an otherwise fairly readable story. Coming from a Highly seasoned authour with Dozens of Class One novels under his belt,to do such a thing is incomprehensible and more than a small let-down to his legions of loyal fans. Stephen King started this trend going in "Bag of Bones",and now, sadly,Koontz has followed suit.
As for the story itself...well....it was Okey, but not Top Shelf Koontz. The long awaited "Big Event" ended up being rather an anti-climax that Should have been Much more finely spun out and detailed, but instead, after much build up,was over in a matter of a few pages with little or no gripping detail to speak of. The characters themselves were not exactly "tuned" to the readers either, but seemed strangely shallow and with little substance to catch the readers sympathies and interests. All in all,I have no choice but to admit that "Odd Thomas" is one Koontz story I wish I hadn't read. "Reality TV" is bad enough..but in a Book Too? No thanks...just entertain us and let us escape life for a little while with a fascinating tale and let it go at that, hey? And,one last gripe.....Dean? GROW BACK THE MOUSTACHE! ! ! What were you and Alex Trebek Thinking??

Summary: Well written, good story and wierd people, just like Koontz
Review: I will never buy another Dean Koontz book!! I enjoyed this one until I was informed that I couldn't re-sell it. Koontz won't allow resale. If he doesn't have enough money by now, he never will be satisfied and I won't participate in his egomania.

Summary: True Style
Review: He sees dead people...tries to stop upcoming disaster...
Once again Dean Koontz outdoes himself with this book. Your emotions run rampant and there isn't a boring piece to this entire book. Well done Man!! Well Done!!

I want to also recommended: Everything Dean Koontz!!!
Also as a non-fiction reader as well,I want to mention Nightmares Echo and Lost Boy-both powerful!

Summary: Starts promising, but then . . . .
Review: * SPOILER ALERT * SPOILER ALERT * SPOILER ALERT *

Odd Thomas starts out very promising, and is well written to a point, but once it establishes the main character and his 'gift', it doesn't really go anywhere.

One of the problems is, Odd does dumb things. The kind of things that make you actually speak out loud to the book. "Dumba**, what are you doing?" I know, some of the dumb things help the story along, but still, they are annoying.

Another problem is that I never really 'feel' for any of the characters. I don't know if it's because they are underdeveloped, or if it's because they just aren't interesting. (I found myself wishing for more dead Elvis sightings.)

By the time I knew what was coming 'the massacre/shootout', I was underwhelmed. I was expecting so much more. By the end, I found myself saying "oh . . .that's it?!?!?"

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: There's no arguing, Koontz still has IT
Review: At a time when I was beginning to wonder if (after reading all of Koontz's books) his books were becoming too predictable, trying too hard- this book proved to me that Koontz still has it!

As for some of the comments other readers had about the love story in this book, I enjoyed it. I didn't think it too over played. I found it very nice actually in that it added to the suspense & the greatness of this book.

What I liked most about this book was that I don't think it was too "out there", like a few of his books have been. It felt totally believable & right. It made it so much easier to read than to be saying, "oh that could never happen!"

Go out & get it, once you pick it up, you won't put it down. And that's pretty amazing for a 400 page book!
